I'm always excited when I get CDs from local bands, but I was particularly excited when I opened a package on Friday with the new album from Thomas A. Minor & The Picket Line . I've seen The Picket Line back Bonnie Billy at Funtown and at the Old Tarr Distillery and I've seen Cheyenne Mize with Bonnie Billy in Bloomington , with Ben Sollee at the NuLu Fest and with Arnett Hollow . I'm kicking myself for missing their CD release show, but as soon as they pop up again, [...]

Ben Sollee , one of our obvious favorites here at Backseat Sandbar, is going to be featured in a new documentary entitled Wooden Box. The title is of course taken from his weapon of choice...the cello. Recently, when I saw Ben at Music Hall of Williamsburg, Ben stopped mid-song and snickered before exclaiming "this is a cello" and then immediately dove back into his song as he absolutely shredded the cello. The documentary is being produced by Kyia Clayton, who spent the last leg of his tour last fall in the van with [...]

I was in Underground Sounds the other day and Phantom Family Halo 's new album Monoliths & These Flowers Never Die was playing. I didn't recognize it at first, but what I heard was epic. Every track seemed lifted from a timeless album that changed music, but in a mirror reflecting PFH's own image. It's messy, its distorted, it's trippy, it's perfect. I've seen them a number of times in the past and I've always been a fan, but this album has taken them to a whole new level for me. The album throws pretension and convention [...]

I'm not sure if the Slint/Tortoise/Shipping News supergroup The For Carnation ever officially broke up. Hence, we can't call their return a "reunion" necessarily. So we'll referred to this event as their triumphant return. While we haven't heard new material since 2000's eponymous record (not counting the 2007 Touch and Go reissue of Promised Works ) and there are no rumors that they may be recording again soon, it does seem The For Carnation has been officially reignited when they agreed to make their first public appearance in years at All Tomorrows Parties' Ten Years of [...]

We were at the NuLu Fest Saturday night and before the rain, we were able to catch The Instruction , then Ben Sollee and Cheyenne Mize. Here are a few pics that we snapped... THE INSTRUCTION BEN SOLLEE W/ CHEYENNE MIZE [...]

Held on the closing night of the third annual Idea Festival, the NuLu Festival is presented in conjunction with the 30th anniversary of Leadership Louisville and the Bingham Fellows Class of 2009. With live music all night, cellist Ben Sollee will perform, as well as Generic Alternatives, Thomas A Minor & the Picket Line, Lucky Pineapple and local rockers The Instruction . The event is free, family-friendly including the [...]
With eight stages rumbling with musical noises for nearly 12 hours a day, it's hard to fully grab a hold of the Austin City Limits Music Festival without having one or two bands slipping through ... Continue reading "ACL Fest Preview: Ben Sollee and !!!" >
With Kanye West acting a fool even more than usual the last few days, it brought to mind Dear Kanye . You know, the Ben Sollee song that takes a few well-deserved shots at Mr. West. So hit play and nod your head continuously, either to the beat or in agreement. Both are appropriate. Ben Sollee - Dear Kanye

After weeks of speculation across the net and many conversations with friends asking who would be replacing the Beastie Boys vacant spot during Friday night's ACL, we finally have an answer to share with everyone. Yeah Yeah Yeahs are officially locked in to the other Friday night headlining spot opposite Kings of Leon . In addition to Karen O and company, Raphael Saadiq has been added to the Friday lineup (5:30-6:30) on the Lady Bird Lake Stage and Ben Sollee will be performing on the Austin Ventures Stage [...]
It's safe to say the Yeah Yeah Yeahs' Saturday night headlining performance at Lollapalooza earlier this month went pretty well . So well in fact that C3 Presents, the company behind the Chicago based music festival, has decided to tap Karen O. and Co. for it's other major event of 2009. As was the case at Lollapalooza, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs have been tapped to fill Austin City Limits' vacant Friday night headlining spot left by the canceled Beastie Boys . The trio, which will play opposite Kings of Leon, will hold down the [...]

Hope no one minds an early "Sunday" post this week; I'm off to Germany in the morning, and was worried I might miss the deadline otherwise. Plus, it's the fortieth anniversary of Woodstock today . How apropos, right? Though the statistics on blog readers tell us that the majority of our readers were conceived after the summer of love, there's no denying the myriad ways in which both the Woodstock generation and the 1969 Woodstock festival have shaped our collective musical landscape. [...]
Technically, the archive hosts the biggest collection of covers, but they've got all those original tunes in there, too. I cut through the bullshit and give you the goods. One cover from several of my favorite bands with collections in the archive. Dig it. When the Levee Breaks (Led Zep)-John Popper (of Blues Traveller) Somewhere Over the Rainbow-Jefferson Starship Never Tear Us Apart (INXS)-John Mayer Gimme Some Lovin' (Spencer Davis Group)-G Love and Special Sauce [...]

LaundroMatinee.com offers live video performances and music clips from some of today's top independent acts. The idea was hatched in late 2006, when My Old Kentucky Blog's founder Craig "Dodge" Lile and Jeff DuPont partnered up to record audio sessions at Pendleton High School in Indiana. The two went on to record over 80 live audio sessions with Bon Iver, Ben Sollee, Dead Confederate, Castanets, Supergrass to name a few. Last year Craig and Jeff teamed up with videographer Tim Wilsbach to record their first live LaundroMatinee session with Bon Iver. The most recent session is with [...]

With the cold spell and the rain coming back to our shores, now seems a perfect time to showcase a few of the artists that showcase the other, slower, deeper and darker side of electronic music. Pegase starts of the mix with a track that has soundtracked some of my more personal and introspective moments over the last few months after Bec over at Electrorash picked him up. Slow epic and atmospheric electronic movements demonstrating his skill makes Pegase one of the most [...]
