...and so brings to a close our very first Blog Takeover Week. We'd like to thank Nicole Atkins from the bottom of our Jersey-loving hearts for her time and contributions during the week, for locking up and shutting off the lights to the office each night—and for restocking the liquor cabinet. How about that shit? We'll see all of you at The Rock and Roll Hotel tonight when she and The Black Sea roll into town, right? 'Til then, Nicole's DJ'd the week's Final Ten from the road... [...]

In college, Vetiver guitarist Kevin Barker became interested in the fingerstyle guitar playing of John Fahey and Bert Jansch. He began to write songs and recorded under the name "Currituck County" for Teenbeat Records, Troubleman Unlimited, and Track and Field Organisation in the UK. Later, he moved to Brooklyn, NY where he attended film school at Columbia University and began playing with Devendra, Antony, and Vetiver. His debut album, You And Me , will be released by Gnomonsong this January. The album was produced by Thom Monahan (Vetiver, Lilys, Gary Louris, Devendra Banhart), and features Pat Sansone (Wilco), Joanna [...]

"When Charlie speaks of Lester, you know someone great has gone... The sweetest swingin´ music man, had a Porkie Pig hat on..." Here´s three versions of Goodbye Pork Pie Hat , the immortal ´59 tribute to recently deceased tenor great Lester ´Pres´ Young by ´angry man of jazz´ Charles Mingus. The bassist´s original, which became a jazz standard over the years, simply flows and flows. In ´68 British folk experimentalists Pentangle - featuring the dual guitar wizardry of Bert Jansch and John Renbourn - tackled [...]

Citing Argentinean film score composer Gustavo Santaolalla and British folk legend Bert Jansch as influences, his new album Slow Attack sees Brett Anderson exploring the abstract rather than the lyrical, choosing to abandon traditionally narrative songs and instead, as he himself puts it, 'using words as impressionistic brushstrokes'. In equal parts both cinematic and pastoral, the album's instrumentation heavily features woodwind and stringed instruments, lending it a gorgeously rich quality. Perhaps taking inspiration from the amorphous beauty of solo Mark Hollis/late Talk Talk, this, Brett's third solo album seems to exist in its own space and time [...]

When The 1969 Warner/Reprise Songbook appeared in early 1969, the liner notes said, by way of explanation, the sampler's goal was "hopefully to win new friends for some very creative people." People like Jethro Tull, the Pentangle, Frank Zappa, Van Dyke Parks, Randy Newman, even Tiny Tim. Warner Bros. Records, founded in 1958, was just beginning to hoist its freak flag, and in just a few years the label's roster would be the cream of the crop. And so the ride began: with L.A. street freak Wild Man Fischer's "Songs For Sale" introducing "My [...]

Tavis Smiley : I want to talk about the song, "Dreamer," that you dedicate to Dick (Gregory). Prince: Oh, well, when I saw the "State of the Black Union," Dick Gregory really moved me and a lot of my friends. I show it to everybody who comes over the house, especially White folks, because they need to hear that, so that they know more about all of us. Because what he said affects all of us. He said something that really hit home [...]

Several weeks ago, Akron/Family hit up the nation's capital... only they weren't alone. Opening the show was Wand , a brilliant songwriter who sometimes composes tunes about people who don't share a certain characteristic with their creator himself. In other words, he's principled. He's also thoughtful, friendly, and independent (maybe even a bit stubbornly so). Midway through his solid set of bleak folk tunes, Wand invited a friend of his from Tennessee to accompany him on pedal steel guitar. Later on, as my buddy and I exited DC's Rock and Roll Hotel after the show, this same [...]

For about six months after my ill-advised and short-lived marriage , I locked myself away in a cave and proceeded to go temporarily insane. My hermitage was a converted warehouse space in the shadow of the Kingdome - vast, sterile and windowless. I rented it as a base of operations for my fledgling freelance photography business. After a manic burst in which I fitted it with a darkroom and kitchenette, I began to slip irretrievably into a deep depression. I quit my steady job. As my money began to dry up, I gave up my Capitol Hill apartment and [...]

Billy Lee Riley- "Thunderbird" (MP3) "My gal is red hot. Your gal ain't doodley squat." Rockabilly boasts thousands of great lyrics, but perhaps none are better than Billy Lee Riley 's "Red Hot" . The rockabilly giant died August 2. The Los Angeles Times ' fascinating obituary of Riley recounts a great story about Riley's reaction to Sam Phillips' alleged suppression of the song. It's worth noting that much of Riley's original Sun sessions are pure blues. The instrumental "Thunderbird" is just plain [...]
