If you are looking to GET HEAVY, tonight is your night to head down to The Cantab Lounge in Central Square, where Mickey Bliss hosts his Club Bohemia Review downstairs. The Vogon Poets headline a lineup of Big Rock and Roll stylings. Poets' John (Awakening Stick, Barstorm) and Matt (Varmints, Coffin Lids, Classic Ruins) have settled in with a new bass player and are ready to blast you off with their mix of psych-galactic-garage rock storm. They have two songs that will be featured on The Bevis Frond [...]
Quick, now's your chance! While every music-biz mope and their mothers are engrossed in the cataclysmic goings-on of the CMJ festival this week, surprise them all by swooping in and saving the industry. But do it the right way, by scarfing up every available copy of all the cool albums and leaving the limp leftovers to wither in the widening vacuum of their own inescapable Darwinian destiny. In other words: these are the albums you need this week. They're all over the map, from hip-hop to post-punk to psych-pop and beyond, but they'll all lead you in the right direction. [...]
Photo gallery and review of Condo Fucks with The Bevis Frond and Sleepyhead at TT the Bear's in Cambridge MA (Sunday, June 21, 2009) How do three bands who barely ever play out (asterisk needed for the Condo Fucks) these days get together for a night of raw rock, insightful songs informed with a British sensibility, and the kind of clever indie guitar rock which was the standard bearer in the '90s? Oh, and theremin solos? The common link is Jon Bernhardt, who organized this wonderful evening in honor of his 25th anniversary of spinning records [...]

Another week of rock has arrived! On Thursday I think the Plough is where I'll end up to check out Robin Lane and Johnny Angel although Men at Harper's Ferry with members of Le Tigre sounds interesting. On Friday there are way too many choices. Andrew Bird and Calexico at the Pavillion looks awesome (except if it's cold and rainy and then not so awesome). My Own Worst Enemy at the Cantab is a guaranteed good time. Also on Friday there's a chance to experience classic Boston rock at TTs with The Blackjacks, The Gravel Pit and The Outlets. And [...]

On Thursday I'm planning on being at TTs for the Detroit Cobras and Dexter Romweber Duo show. This looks like a great show so I really hope that there are tickets available at the door. If it's soldout, maybe I'll end up at the Plough for the Andrea Gillis Variety Show(could be cool). Friday has a couple of shows that look good. Fiery Furnaces with Hallelujah the Hills and the Bodega Girls at the Middle East are definitely worth a look if you've never seen them before. And if you like Queen, the Lizard is where you want to be, [...]
Here's a 3 night run at the House of Blues. On Thursday, if you're lucky you have tickets go see TV on the Radio at the House of Blues. On Friday the House of Blues hosts Gorgol Bordello. And on Saturday, PJ Harvey would be a great show to catch at the House of Blues. If you feel like braving the masses, Harpoon is hosting their Summer Session on Friday and Saturday. On Saturday they have an Americana stage and Girls Guns and Glory are performing. Check here for set times: www.harpoonbrewery.com [...]
Never mind the Condo Fucks, here's Yo La Tengo. "Periodically Double Or Triple" is the first mp3 from the forthcoming double album, Popular Songs (Matador). Its Hammond organ reminds us of Fakebook's "Emulsified" ... and nothing else. Fun Fact: The Condo Fucks are playing in Cambridge, Mass., later this month with the Bevis Frond and [...]

On Thursday, Au Revoir Simone is at TTs and they're great. I've seen them a couple of times and put on a good show. Or you can get your uke on by heading over to Toad for Melvern Taylor's early set. On Friday, there are a many many cool shows to check out. The Norweigian band I Was King looks tempting, as do the Figgs at the Midway but knowing me, I'll probably end up at Precinct for Muck & the Mires and Andrea Gillis. The incomparable Leonard Cohen is playing 2 nights, Friday and Saturday at the Citi Center [...]

On Thursday is Keane at the Pavillion and I have a soft spot for them. Plus it's supposed to be a great evening weather-wise and it'd be great to be outside listening to music. On Friday the show at the Middle East Down is very tempting with Hallelujah the Hills, Magic Magic and Cymbals Eat Guitar. My pick for Saturday is the big St Stanislaus Day Polka Party at the Polish American Club in East Cambridge. Yup, there'll be polka music and yup there'll be yummy Polish food like kielbasa and pierogis and yup there'll be beer. I dare you [...]

Okay, so my mind is reeling from the Lost season finale but I will do my best to focus on music now. On Thursday, you can start your night off with a little uke music at Toad with Melvern Taylor (and it's free). Rhett Miller, from the Old 97s would be a cool show. Also the Killer Abs rock so the Church show would be a good choice. On Friday I'm leaning toward going to the Plough to see Andrea Gillis, although the Konks at the Cantab would be fun as well as the [...]

A great way to start the weekend is by heading over to Toad on Thursday for the free early set by Electrolux and if you're having fun, you can stay and check out the residency set by One Happy Island. On Friday, I'll be getting my inner geek on and heading off to see the new Star Trek movie and I am very excited! If I weren't, I'd be going to Fan Pier to see Buffalo Tom and the Great Bandini. I hear festivities start at 7p and expect Buffalo Tom to perform at 9p. Did I mention that it's [...]

Here's what's up for this week. On Thursday my pick is Lars Vegas at the Alchemist in JP. How can you beat hearing Bunnyman for free? On Friday people are talking about the Electric Six/Bang Camaro show at the Middle East, not certain if there are tix left or not. If you get shut out of that show head over to the Plough for the Outlets acoustic thing. On Saturday don't forget to stop by your local comic book store for some freebies. I hear William Shatner has a new comic book that will be part of the promotion. I'm [...]
For An Outbreak of Twangin', the follow-up to 2008's Phantom Guitars, The Bevis Frond's Nick Saloman has again assembled a couple dozen incredibly obscure and kitschy surf guitar gems. I am pleased to report that the influence of legendary paranoid reverb-monger/occultist/murder er Joe Meek looms large here.
if you're thinking this is going to be as good as the first nuggets compilation it's really not. a lot of these songs, i don't think, come even close to being labeled psychedelic. still, there are some really choice tracks on here. most of which i have uploaded separately. DISC ONE: part one // part two 1. Vanishing Girl - The Dukes of Stratosphear (i fucking love this song, no better way to start this compilation) 2. Help You Ann - The Lyres 3. The Real World - [...]
They're nobody's buzz bands anymore. But since 1993, MAGNET has discovered and documented more great music than memory will allow. The groups may have broken up or the albums may be out of print, but this time, history is written by the losers. Here are some of the finest albums that time forgot but we [...]

It's hard to imagine a better guide to vintage European prog/psych than The Bevis Frond's Nick Saloman. Here he curates another compilation of quality obscurities from the late '60s and early '70s, this time originating primarily in Belgium, Holland, Germany, Ireland, and Britain. While not every selection is a lost classic, this collection is thoroughly entertaining.
