There's something warm and comforting about Mississippi Studios . The low lighting, the quirky decorations and the amazing acoustics lend their shows a feeling of familiarity and warmth, making each event an intimate affair. It was the perfect setting for A.A. Bondy . Opening the show was local transplant Haley Bonar , a petite woman with a big voice and an even bigger stage presence. Strumming a slightly out of tune guitar, her voice swung from breathy and soft up into clear, delicate high notes. Her music has a safe, dependable vibe without [...]

GET ON THIS! yvynyl : Banannnas - a yvynyl mixtape This set of tunes all seem loosely related thematically, though that wasn't fully intentional. The songs touch on the light - love, sex and, well, beaches, sunshine and surfing. But they're balanced out by the macabre - heartbreak, thievery and even murderous intent. A lot of them take a few moments to really draw you in (but they do so with tear-jerking ferocity) while others just snap to, like a twig of green pop rock ready to be [...]
Buy Work Out #1 on Juno! Wareika - Mountain Ride (Stream) Tartelet Records : The label that will forever remind you of delicious pastry. I think Flo from Nobody Cares About Kitsune made this observation months and months ago, and now it's all that I can think about when I look at their logo (could it be a delicious cake divided into sections?). So Fredski and Tomboy (label runners) have been putting [...]

Ironically, one of the last of Jay's contribution to the world was a charitable effort in support of the vastly influential New Zealand musician, artist, and Flying Nun mainstay Chris Knox who suffered a suffered a "life altering" stroke . To help with his rehabilitation costs 33 bands have donated Knox-related covers to the double CD collection Stroke - Songs For Chris Knox . The tracklist includes Yo La Teno, Lou Barlow, Jay Reatard (RIP), David Kilgour, Bonnie 'Prince' Billy, Stephin Merritt, Bill Callahan, the Mountain Goats, the Chills, the Verlaines, Tall Dwarfs themselves, etc. Jeff Mangum offers [...]
Several more details have surfaced since CoS originally reported on the upcoming benefit album for Kiwi punk-legend Chris Knox . To begin, the music world experienced the untimely passing of up and comer Jay Reatard , whom kicks off Stroke: Songs for Chris Knox with a cover of "Pull Down the Shades". You can check out a one-minute sample via the Stroke official website . The recording may be the last non-live release by Reatard, and choosing to cover "Pull Down the Shades" seems eerily ironic [...]
If you like concerts, but don't like going out or if you like desks, but hate work NPR's Tiny Desk Concert Series is your new pal. Our old pal Bill Callahan performed just such a concert last summer and it's pretty much the be-all/end-all of internet music videos. Callahan released his second album under his own name a little before, and, as usual, it changed the way we think of Bill Callahan. Callahan's best songs have always been about either birds or trees and on Sometimes I Wish We Were an Eagle , he manages [...]

When I was a teenager I was deeply into hardcore and then SST-related bands, noise, and anything I could find that was slightly off-kilter in those old Ajax catalogs (Sun City Girls, Thinking Fellers, early Pavement, etc). I think Ajax is how I got into the overlapping New Zealand experimental and home-recorded pop scenes: Dead C, Terminals, Wreck Small Speakers On Expensive Stereos, Alastair Galbraith, Cakekitchen (and This Kind Of Punishment), the Peter Jefferies solo albums, etc. I tended toward the darker and moodier material, but as far as pop goes, I really loved (and love) Flying Nun mainstays Tall [...]

We started the Decade No One Can Sufficiently Name (aughts, noughties, whatever -- all of them suck unequivocally) with a hotly disputed election whose winner wasn't announced until later than made sense. So, we at Prefix decided to end the decade in kind. But unlike Bush vs. Gore, the Prefix election to determine who put out the best album of 2009 didn't involve ballot stuffing and sketchy recount practices. Well, maybe it did. Either way, we can positively, absolutely verfiy that no one named Jeb was involved in any way. At any rate, below [...]

Well, this is a little late in coming, but it's certainly worth a look. We've just posted our collective "best songs of the year" post over at In Review Online, and there's a little of everything on there. I contributed to the list, but it's very different than my "songs" list would have been (had I submitted one), which is a good thing. Read the full thing HERE. Here are the songs I included: Dirty Projectors - "Stillness is the Move" Animal Collective - "Brother Sport" [...]

I'm gonna keep it as short as the previous ones, just because it's already the 7th of January. I should be listening to 500 2010 records right now! I promised myself I'd provide more regular updates, maybe in a different form than I used to. Oh, and I'll finish my unknown bands from last decade list. Eventually. 20. La Strada - La Strada (EP) ( Ernest Jenning Recording Company ) What? The New [...]

Formed: Though she began playing sparse folk songs in New Haven, Conn., in the early 1970s, Bloom started recording after she met collaborator and avant-garde guitarist Loren MazzaCane Connors in 1976. Latest release: Thin Thin Line, which is scheduled to drop Feb. 9 on former Red House Painters leader Mark Kozelek's label, Caldo Verde Records. Why you care: Sometimes all you need as a songwriter is one break. When director Richard Linklater used Bloom's "Come Here" as the song Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy played in an old listening [...]
