I did three year-end mixes in 2008 and I've now upped it to four for 2009 -- and as I was uploading them I realized I still left some stuff off. (Sorry, Super Furry Animals, Grizzly Bear, Knight School and Let's Wrestle. Dirty Projectors, however, was not an oversight.) Anyway, I think these turned out pretty good and, despite the accidental omissions, still do a good job of what this year sounded like. To me at least. For those of you keeping score, this may also give a clue to what might be [...]

It's always a better year for songs than albums, and here's my list of Favorite Songs of 2009. I've stopped using the word "best" as that implies some sort of higher standard. People can argue that "Lisztomania" is not the best single of 2009, but they have no grounds to say it's not my favorite. Anyway. Most of these were actual singles, and the rest could've been and when making this list I kept that in mind. Singles are ephemeral; it's ok if you don't end up listening to them a year from now. But I think a lot [...]

Part 3 of 4: Last year in my year end round up of my favorite singles I wrote how the 7 inch single seemed to be coming back into favor. This year it went over the top. There seemed to be labels popping out of the woodwork who's main mission was to gather up the best songs and put them out on little pieces of vinyl. To reflect the bumper crop of singles I've expanded the year end singles count down to 40. Like Casey Kasem use to do, we're gonna count them down. I don't think we'll be doing [...]

Sycophantically compiling end of year lists in November's one thing. Condensing twelve musical months, or 52 weeks, or 365 days, or 8,760 hours etc into 20 commendable efforts or so ranked more or less in terms of iTunes play counts, added to the entire rejection of any other records released over the course of those 525,600 minutes, seems rather futile. Squeezing a decade into a few albums more is simply ludicrous. When this decade commenced, I was twelve. To put it into perspective, the hypocritical adoration for X Factor that's engulfed Old Blighty was merely the terminology for a certain [...]
Your Twenties - Billionaires A little surf pop-rock for you on this beautiful Sunday.

Channeling Fleetwood Mac's musical stylings with a hint of late-era Beatles, Family of the Year braid catchy melodies, stellar male/female vocals and personal folk tales to create some of the happiest and saddest music you've ever heard. Opening up with "Feel Good Track Of Rosemead" it's a delicate harmony and rock guitar combo, very much like The New Pornographers, or The Polyphonic Spree. Actually, it's singers Joe Keefe (formerly of The Billionaires) and Vanessa Long who harmonize and get lots of milage out of their pop chemistry and aural dynamics. Fans of The Beach Boys' Pet Sounds who hear the [...]

Billionaires for Wealthcare showed up at a AHIP lobbyist (anti-health care) meeting this past week. Here's what happened...

The Trailer Trash Tracys have a name that bears no resemblance to the sound they make. You might be expecting some raw garage-rock band but 'Candy Girl' (No Pain in Pop 7", red vinyl) is slow and expectant shoegazing, full of reverb and echoey vocals. It's like early My Bloody Valentine or the JAMC on high dosage diazepam. It creates a beautifully woozy atmosphere with a very minimal approach to instrumentation (see [the B-side] for evidence), and even if you don't like the name, you'll be hearing a lot more of them. Myspace [...]
It was bad enough when the nerds that created Facebook struck it big and earned themselves bags of cash and the reputation of kings of the Internet. But now they get their own movie, starring Justin Timberlake . Some guys have all the luck. Thanks to reports by Variety (via Prefix Magazine ), we've learned that Timberlake will star as Napster co-founder turned Facebook president Sean Parker. The movie, appropriately titled The Social Network , will also (tentatively) star Jessie Eisenberg of Adventureland [...]

Where did it go? Summer's over folks. Yes I know it doesn't technically end till September 21 but Labor Day signifies the end of the season. Back to school, network TV shows less crappy reality shows, we can start eating oysters again without fear. And so finishes 13 weeks of mixes from yours truly. Like last year, I decided to make the last one a double, divided into day (pop) and night (dance, or at least "dance-y" you be the judge). I hope you made the most of the summer and enjoyed these.

Most of you all know DJ AM passed away yesterday. It's a sad event when anyone dies let alone a trailblazer for a particular scene. What I found most amazing about all this is how far the DJ as a figure in today's society has come. The general North American public really never cared about or heard of any DJs until DJ AM. Yeah, maybe it was because he dated Nicole Richie and then almost died in a plane crash with Travis Barker (another celebrity), but that's sadly how our society works. What was important was he [...]
For their new single "Billionaires" (out now via Neon Gold), the guys in Your Twenties made a video about not making a video, the sort of visuals-to-create-irony-while- sort-of-still-creating-somethi ng. The video finds the frontman and former bassist for Metronomy, Gabriel Stebbing, hanging...

Your Twenties take a couple cues from Blur on their second single: Stephen Street produced it, and the cover owes more than a little to the back cover of The Great Escape. That's about where the Blur comparisons stop though. The band which started off as a side project of Metronomy 's Gabriel Stebbing is apparently no longer a side project with Stebbing having left his former band to put his full effort to Your Twenties. With their prog-ish, yet tightly wound, harmony laden pop Your Twenties remind me [...]
