I have mixed feelings about the Rock 'n' Roll Hotel. It doesn't have anything to do with the talent they book: I've seen several amazing shows there - Jack Penate / Miike Snow in September for example. The crowds usually aren't as big or vocal (therefore the vibe's not as great) as with other D.C. clubs, primarily because of the RnR's location. It's a pain to get to without a car and even if you can find a place to park, it's the kind of place you're worried to walk around by yourself late at [...]

What happens when you get 8 insanely creative, diversely groovy musical artists coordinated and rocking together as a touring, performing band unit? We got to experience such a sensational event recently when NYC's one-of-a-kind The Phenomenal Handclap Band arrived for a live Luxury Wafers Session. Their band name sums up their vibe, which in sound waves radiates part funk, part disco, part psychedelia, all completely, toweringly infectious. Aesthetically, The Phenomenal Handclap Band lays out an undulating visual cornucopia. Everybody moves [...]

The Phenomenal Handclap Band is a tight-knit aggregation of musicians and artists from Lower Manhattan and Brooklyn. At the center of it is Daniel Collás, the Witch Doctor, and Sean Marquand, the Medicine Man; who, after years of searching and contemplation, through live performance and the manipulation of recorded music, have finally succeeded in assembling the personification of their holy vision: a musical juggernaut comprised of Daniel, Sean, and their supremely talented friends Patrick Wood, Nicholas Movshon, Luke O'Malley, Laura Marin, Bing Ji Ling, and Joan Tick. [...]
Black Betty ( which is soon to shut down ) was jam-packed Wednesday night for The Phenomenal Handclap Band. I recognized one of the cats from San Francisco - Bing Ji Ling , aka Quinn Luke. This band is a good time. I predict a new Summer of Love 2009 featuring this collective of über-kewl musicians from other bands you have heard of. We stayed for a few songs and then went to Spuyten Duyvil across the street, next to the new Knitting Factory (formerly Luna Lounge). They serve Tower of London mead, a [...]

With 8-pieces on-stage last night at Southpaw (5/12), The Phenomenal Handclap Band took advantage of silky back-up harmonies, funky synth, a steady rhythm section and two slamming guitars to lay the soul-disco on thick. Midway thru a building set, guitarist Quinn Luke (my new hero) took lead vocals on "Baby", a genius throwback to the 70's soul era, and killed. Next was "Mather" a rocking instrumental carried by Luke O'Malley's middle-eastern sounding guitar/sitar. Quinn Luke then resumed vocals on "All of the Above", a disco tune that had the entire crowd moving. For a band [...]

Just a quicky today. Firstly, can I ask (not that I imagine this mumbo jumbo gets read much) that anyone sending music does it through my dropbox now pretty pretty please? As it stands I'm 1500+ emails behind and doubt I'll ever catch up so doing that makes everything HEAPS easier for me to listen to tunes being submitted. I feel really bad for having to neglect so many emails but there's just no way I can process it all. I do still love you though. All of you. Except SXSW. Fuck off with your 300 [...]

The other day I gave my brother a band-aid for a cut on his hand. Actually, I should say Band-Aid, with a capital "B" and a capital "A" because it was a name brand bandage. Not only was it an actual Band-Aid, but it was one of the fancy ones. They're called "tough strips" and they stay stuck to your body until you peel them off with a putty knife. It doesn't matter if you're sweating, showering, or taking a long walk though a hurricane. These things do not come off. At the end of the day as [...]

Saturday is/was the end (at least until next summer) of a lot of outdoor dancing in New York. It's also unfortunately a hurricane?! Saturday is/was the final Warm Up party at P.S.1, the final Beach Party at Water Taxi Beach, and the final People Don't Dance No More boat party ! :( Info on all 3 and more below: A very soulful/housey edition of Warm Up was today (rain or shine) 3pm - Jerome Derradji ( Still Music ) 4pm - Bing Ji Ling (live) 5pm - [...]
by bmac This weekend another one of my friends hooked up with a woman in her 40s. Is it just me or did American Pie open a crazy can-o-worms with the whole milf thing? Don't get me wrong, it's awesome. I'm just surprised sometimes at how common it is to hear terms like milf and couger. It's as if Stiffler's mom made it socially acceptable for middle-aged women to have sex with younger guys. A true pioneer. Get em' all at [...]
by bmac Warm Up is an acclaimed summer music series that goes down each Saturday (from July 5-Sept 6) at the P.S. 1 Contemporary Art Center in Long Island City, Queens. Each year P.S. 1 holds a design contest where one lucky architecture firm gets to transform their courtyard into a funky venue for a weekly 7-hour pregame from 2-9pm. This year's winning team, WORK , went the green-route and created an urban farm out of large cardboard tubes. There's a $10 [...]
