So here we are at the weekend before the holiday season officially begins and everyone's schedule gets really busy, so get your music fixes in now. On Thursday night you can check out the final night of the Jenny Dee & The Deelinquints residency at the Lizard. It's also the first night of the International Pop Overthrow 4 night stint at Church. Night 1 of the IPO has The Buckners, The Doom Buggies and more. There are also 2 great free shows on Thursday, Lars Vegas is at the Alchemist and Sally O'Brien's has an impressive lineup. MP3 : Jay Reatard - It Ain't Gonna Save Me MP3 : The Black Hollies - Gloomy Monday Morning MP3 : Bryan Scary and the ShreddingTears - (It's A) Gambler's Whirl Pels ikke bjørnen før den er skudt. Or, don't skin the bear before it's been shot. That seems to be exactly what Jay Reatard 's old band members tried to do when they walked out on him in October. (But then again, that's punk music, right?) Inconvenient timing (due to them being on [...]

So many great choices for Thursday. You could start at Toad for the early part of the night and see uke master Melvern Taylor. Afterwards there are many venues that have great line-ups. Gordon Gano, yup the guy from the Violent Femmes, and his his new band is at the Middle East with Sidewalk Driver and Mascara. Also on Thursday there's the Lovewhip cd release at Church or go to TTs for John Powhida International Airport, Logan 5 and the Runners, Weisstronauts and Mercy James (great local line-up!). On Friday, I'll Be at Precinct to see My Own Worst Enemy, [...]
Whether you want to admit it or not New Jersey bands tend to fit a particular sound for the most part, luckily The Black Hollies give the Garden State some diversity when it comes to rock n' roll. The Jersey City quaret have just released their 3rd LP Softly Towards the Light , out on Ernest Jenning Recordings and is already picking up steam. Justin Angelo Morey, singer and bassist of The Black Hollies was nice enough to answer some questions for us regarding their new record, touring and the history of the group. [...]

Most of my mornings lately have involved me getting up at 6.30 for a run before getting organised for work. Yesterday I competed in a 5k run though so I treated myself to a bit of a sleep in this morning. I was quite happy to skip my usual half-dead "come on, you know you'll love it once you hit that footpath" pep talk and roll over for another quick snooze. Definitely a nice way to kick off the week. The Black Hollies know what it's like to dread that Monday morning wake up call [...]

Zowie, another great weekend of music with lots of choices. On Thursday, unfortunately the UK band, Heavy scheduled to play at Great Scotts has cancelled their tour so if you were planning on checking them out, sorry. But don't fret, there's an awesome show at the Lizard with Jenny Dee & the Deelinquints, the Rudds and Brett Rosenberg. Friday starts a big weekend for the Plough and Stars which is celebrating its 40th Anniversary with a plethora of bands playing and it's free! Friday night has Andrea Gillis , The Family Jewels and others at the Plough. If that's not [...]

The Black Hollies - Gloomy Monday Morning [...]

[ download ] New Jersey quartet The Black Hollies make the sort of music that wouldn't be out of place on the soundtrack to a Wes Anderson film, somewhere between the sweaty, soulful rave-ups of The Spencer Davis Group and the distinctly British branch of the late 1960s psychedelic-pop tree. On October 6th, the band released their third LP, Softly Towards the Light , on the Ernest Jenning Record Co. and are currently on tour in support of the album. This time around, guitarist Jon Gonnelli put [...]
The Black Hollies, a Jersey City-based quartet, released their third album, Softly Towards The Light (Ernest Jenning), on October 6. They are taking a victory lap with "Gloomy Monday Morning," a shimmering rock track with Brian Jonestown Massacre overtones. They'll be touring all through November, so if you fancy a killer live band that sounds [...]

Apparently Halloween Weekend means every band in the area is appearing as another band, could be entertaining or just confusing I guess we'll have to check them out to find the answer. On Thursday you can go to TTs and see the Talking Heads, Robert Palmer x 2, The Replacements and The Who. Or you could go to the Plough for the surf band The Trabants and the Middle East has King Khan & the BBQ Show and Downbeat 5. On Friday the Armory in Somerville has a spooky event with the screening of Phantom of the Opera and music [...]

Unlike the slow pace of last week , we weren't at a loss for stories this week. In fact, we didn't even get to the Warren Haynes Christmas Jam lineup announcement on Friday. The initial lineup of moe., Counting Crows, Ani DiFranco and Mule doesn't get our juices pumping, but there's still plenty of time for more artists to be announced. Plus, the special guest roster of Trombone Shorty, DJ Logic, Audley Freed, Jackie Greene, Kevn Kinney, Eric Krasno, Col. Bruce Hampton and Robert Kearns shows promise. [...]
*UPDATE* The Royal Chains ( Issue # 10 ) - Pop / Rock - New York, USA Featured some months ago in regards to their free album Umbrella , the Royal Chains have a fabulous new single out: "Wolf" . The sound is noticeably cleaner and more focused than that heard on their debut album (though I do love that for it's grittiness too), summery and catchy as ever! --- [...]
So what's happening this weekend? I think there are still tix available for Bill Maher at the Wilbur on Thursday (and they now have a liquor license so cheers!). Also on Thursday you have a chance to check out the new project the Port Charles Quintet at the Plough which sounds fun or you could go to the Brattle for the Califone show. But if these don't appeal to you, don't worry, there are many other great choices on Thursday. On Friday, the show at the Cantab looks strong with the Brooklyns, but then there's also Dennis [...]
