Real Estate is a fairly new quartet out of Jersey. Their name has been on everyone's lips following a handful of much-talked-about performances during CMJ in New York last month, not to mention their string of vinyl releases on the likes of Woodsist and Mexican Summer . Featuring Matt Mondanile, who creates his own brand of tropical pop under the name Ducktails , Real Estate is a focused, four-man torrent of chilled-out beach jams. Their music sounds like a sweet puff of smoke floating by on a lazy Sunday afternoon. [...]
BEST ALBUMS OF THE NOUGHTIES The daunting task of putting together something that you know lots of readers won't agree with is never easy, but then we thought you could always go make your own lists. At least we had the balls... So the 50s had rock n roll, the 60s had it's pop and folk, the 70s it's punk, disco and glam, the 80s it's pop, hip hop and hair rock, the 90s it's grunge, brit pop and dance music. It begs the question - what standout genre defines the [...]
Highlights from the Voodoo Experience: 30 October - 1 November 2009 - New Orleans / In its 11th year the festival welcomed a plethora of musical greats to help embrace New Orleans under Halloween's spell. It has been two weeks since the Voodoo Experience and I finally feel that my life is back in order. As New Orleans' premiere fall music festival, it's geared to worship music and showcase New Orleans all while embracing the Halloween spirit. In its 11th year the festival welcomed a plethora of musical greats including, but not limited to: Ween, the Flaming Lips, [...]

At the cool little space known as Public Assembly, Babelgum and the Ice Cream Man decided to throw a party last night (Nov. 17th). Not only was there an open bar and free ice cream to celebrate the completion of the Ice Cream Man's journey across America and the music festival scene , but musical acts Kurt Vile and Times New Viking were set to entertain the assembled mass. Not bad for a Tuesday. The space was clamoring, the alcohol was flowing, and clusters of chatty people seemed ready for some [...]
Things I know about The Almighty Defenders: 1. It is a combination of near-huge The Black Lips and ever rising, ever surprising duo King Khan & The BBQ Show. 2. It was recorded in a rumored week, after The Black Lips fled India after showing dick, balls, man-kissing, and a handful more to a group of Indian [...]

It's almost cliché, but after college I drove cross country with a few friends and, literally, filled out a Relix internship application in the parking lot before a Deer Creek Phish show. I sent it off at a local Kinkos and after some persistent nudging scored an interview that fall. I interned for Aeve Baldwin, who was the editor at that time, and after a few months that turned into a part time job at the magazine. I did pretty much every job under the editorial sun except—luckily for Relix—copy editing, including project coordinator, staff writer, Jambands.com contributing editor, staff [...]

...at least according to NPR listeners . Check it out after the jump, then read and listen to the whole All Songs Considered piece HERE . I've really enjoyed reading all these "decade-end" lists so far, and in my opinion this list seems to come closest to accurately reflecting the decade in music. If you're interested, you can also find a running list of such lists at largehearted boy . Check 'em out and see what made the decade in music for everyone. Here's NPRs list of "The Decade's 50 Most Important Recordings": [...]

this kindof says it all... i walked on the banks of the tincan banana dock and sat down under the huge shade of a southern pacific locomotive to look at the sunset over the box house hills and cry. jack kerouac sat beside me on a busted rusty iron pole, companion, we thought the same thoughts of the soul, bleak and blue and sad-eyed, surrounded by the gnarled steel roots of trees of machinery. the oily water on the river mirrored the red sky, sun sank on top [...]

I hate that people expect a person to stay classy after a break up. Fuck that, I was never like that and I'm not going to act like it now. I'm immature and a mess if you didn't know already and... Well, just let my sistas tell it... I went there: MP3: KEEPIN' IT DESPERATE MIX (101 MB) 1. Calvin Harris - Can't Get Alone (Dirty South Bootleg) [...]

Portland may be music heaven most of the time, but often, the culture of constantly rotating indie rock and electro-pop gets a little tiresome and stagnat. The Scion Garagefest was a much-needed breath of fresh air into a music scene begging for something a bit more rowdy. Out of the whole day and all the many bands that played, the last half of the line up at Berbati's Pan was one of the more solid parts of the festival. Sometimes I feel like I'm the last devoted music fan on earth. I tend to buy every album from my favorite artists. I go along for the ride; if a band dazzled me with their debut album, I'll commit to their next release, even if the critics cry sophomore slump. However in the case of the Flaming Lips, I'm convinced they are doing everything in their power to convince me to NOT buy their new album, Embryonic . Described by critics as an esoteric double album of song sketches that mark a return to their [...]

Tijuana, 2007.
