Before Daedelus' performance Friday night, I'd never really understood "underground" when describing a show. I've listened to underground music. I had been a fan of Daedelus' Exquisite Corpse , and recently, became a fan of Free the Robots. I never before had to search for a music venue down a dark dead end alley, which was marked by a couple of beef cakes in black suits. Quizzically, like an innocent doe I asked them, "Is this 103 Harriet." This is underground? "Yes, what do you need," the beef cake barked at me. I didn't need [...]
BEST ALBUMS OF THE NOUGHTIES The daunting task of putting together something that you know lots of readers won't agree with is never easy, but then we thought you could always go make your own lists. At least we had the balls... So the 50s had rock n roll, the 60s had it's pop and folk, the 70s it's punk, disco and glam, the 80s it's pop, hip hop and hair rock, the 90s it's grunge, brit pop and dance music. It begs the question - what standout genre defines the [...]
In this day and age, few things come around that make us stir from head to toe with glee and anticipation. One of these things was the announcement of the new rock super ensemble that is Them Crooked Vultures , a tripod of giants with the force of three generations of rock 'n' roll. I'm going to assume a number of people know by now, but all the same, the Vultures are: badass Josh Homme from Queens of the Stone Age on guitar, the Foo Fighters' Dave Grohl going back to his drum set, and none other [...]

Pictured: Echtra I get sent a lot of stuff that's not metal, but may be of interest to metalheads. This includes side projects by metal musicians, non-metal releases by metal labels, dark ambient, noise, and so on. Some of this stuff is too good to keep secret, so I'm starting this column to feature it. It's not meant to be authoritative; plenty of dedicated resources already exist for dark ambient and noise, for example. This is more of a periodic [...]

I wasn't gonna do this, 'cause I know I'll catch all kinds of shit and lose mad respect just by putting my opinion out here, but here I go anyway. Just to get this out of the way, I have nothing but love for Joe Budden. But he wasn't one of the 10 most important rappers of the decade. With my list, I'm trying to pick the 10 people who I think did the best to move rap forward during this decade. As the 2000s started, many of us thought that rap had seen its [...]

Last Friday, we sent C=T contributor Molly Müeller to catch the first in a wave of buzz shows to slam Denver. Art Brut-DC Comics and Chocolate Milkshake [mp3] Surfer Blood-Swim (To Reach the End) [mp3] The opening act for Friday night's Show at the Bluebird, Jim McTurnan and the Kids that Killed the Man appeared to be playing mostly to a small group of friends; it was early and there were just a few people gathered [...]

Here's a record I saw decently priced at the WFMU Record Fair but wasn't ready to pounce on. I remember reading about a dark folk record with a big Leonard Cohen influence, but couldn't tie that review to this record. I'm sure I'll find another copy someday soon. Terlazzo recorded this album in 1983 while living in York, PA. The Acid Archives describes Honour Among Thieves as, "incredibly dark loner poet folk/rock. Very heavy Leonard Cohen influence, but makes LC seem cheerful by comparison. Even the one song that is upbeat, almost good-timey, has a dark [...]

Ray Davies Appears at the Orpheum on Saturday Night I didn't get up to as much as I'd hoped last week, but did catch Julian Casablancas and the Happy Hollows at Spaceland. Casablancas didn't do anything to win me back, but most of the crowd seemed really into it. I'll definitely be at Ray Davies this Saturday and I'll most likely check out more of the Happy Hollows tonight. Monday 11/9/09 [Pick of the Night] [...]
In this week's paper, Observer contributor Eric Grubbs takes a look at the path taken by The Crash That Took Me--one that's run through past area favorites [DARYL], Black Tie Dynasty and Macavity... Here's the Old School for this week: Wu-Tang Clan ~ " Protect Ya Neck " First of all, who's your A&R A mountain climber who plays an electric guitar But he don't know the meaning of dope When he's lookin for a suit and tie rap that's cleaner than a bar of soap From WuTang 's '93 album, Enter the Wu-Tang(36 Chambers) , one of the all time Classic Hip Hop Albums. First of all, I want to thank all of you who have been digg-ing and Stumble-Uponing these posts. Their popularity is the reason I keep doing them so regularly. 1. Marvel/Lionsgate just released a box set Marvel Animation's 6 DVD movies. Thought I'd let you know whether it's worth the price. Inside, you'll get: Ultimate Avengers 1. A pretty faithful (but abbreviated and somewhat sanitized) rendition of the Ultimates comic book, focusing on the Avengers-vs-Hulk-vs-aliens story. Excellent animation and voicework, well-paced story, perfect for all ages. A+. [...]

Fresh and Onlys: Grey-Eyed Girls The Fresh & Onlys, a five piece from San Francisco, are the latest in a line of lo-fi, primal rock'n'roll bands on Woodsist Records. This time the band's USP is a sound that mixes garage-rock (the stinging fuzz of 'Black Coffin') and psych-pop from an outfit that has worked with Skygreen Leopards and Papercuts among others. You can group them with peers like Wavves and Crystal Stilts (the scuzz of [...]

1. Batman: The Brave and the Bold. If you have kids and you're not watching Cartoon Network's, "Batman; The Brave & The Bold," you're a bad parent. Yes, it's a little campy (just like the "Batman!" show of the 1960s), but that's part of its charm: A superhero cartoon . . . for kids! An increasingly rare commodity these days. The second season began with an OMAC episode, and promises an Outsiders appearance, guests like Hawk and Dove, and, get this, a musical. Produced by James "Animaniacs" Tucker, this show proves [...]

A man impersonating the Kentucky Fried Chicken founder Colonel Sanders managed to dupe his way into the UN headquarters in New York and shake hands with a senior official. Dressed in the fast food icon's familiar white suit and black bow tie, the actor evaded tight security to gain access to the restricted areas of the complex. He even posed for a photograph with Ali Treki, the new president of the UN General Assembly, before the alarm was raised and he was ejected. Even if it were the real Colonel Sanders, what business would he have [...]

Back in the mid-nineties I read an interview with Dick Latvala wherein the Grateful Dead archivist told a story about being in the Vault with Mickey Hart. The percussionist was suddenly tuned in to the ripping version of The Eleven playing on the stereo, and said something along the lines of "Damn! We were on fire." To which Latvala replied, "This isn't you. This is the Zen Tricksters." [Photo by Spreetaper ] Although the Tricksters, who are on temporary hiatus while Jeff Mattson is the [...]
At least when Limp Bizkit made rap-metal, they had a vague understanding of what "rap" was. To capitalize off the downtuned wasteland of wallet-chained Neanderthals with creative facial hair and awkward b-boy stances, venerable hip-hop institution Loud Records released the nearly meritless Loud Rocks in 2000. "Yippee," exclaimed exactly nobody when this an album of rapcore collabos, remixes, remakes and just-plain-wrongness was released. "Finally Big Pun got the Shootyz Groove treatment he deserved!" To make the shittiest song on an album that included Sugar Ray, Crazy [...]

Billie Carlton A young pretty actress called Billie Carlton had a starring role on stage at the huge Victory Ball held at the Albert Hall on 28th November 1918. Tatler had a few months previously described one of her appearances on a London stage, saying that she had: 'cleverness, temperament and charm. Not enough of the first, and perhaps too much of the latter.' While one newspaper described her appearance at the ball: It seemed that every man there wished to dance with her. Her costume was extraordinary and daring [...]

Photo: B.Scott "Hov on that new shit Niggas like how come Niggas want my old shit Buy my old album..." - Jay-Z from " On To The Next One " (I guess I'm one of them niggas, then.) The Blueprint 3 served up a glimpse of Grizzly Bear Jay. But for those who grew up on the "thug nigga 'til the end," the appetite for the real nigga shit wasn't quite whetted, with the exception of "Real [...]

The first up, Jean-Philippe Rameau 's Adonis took us as close as you can get to an evening in Versailles without the price tag. My friend and I scored the last two tickets to be had. This free-for-all packed the house as part of Peabody Opera's tie-in with Free Fall Baltimore . My main beef with Rameau wasn't the music, but the dulled-down story that was rather stiffly acted by the singers and dancers of Peabody Opera and [...]
