Three rootin' tootin' reasons to head on over to the Hideout tonight... 1. It's Monday which, for the time being, means it's Robbie Fulks Monday. He owns that night at the Hideout and this week is no exception. If you've not heard but like good old fashioned country, country the way it used to be, full of dry wit and a big old f#@& you attitude then Robbie is your man. There's no winking here. Just honest to goodness countrified music through and through. [...]

Photo by Jacob Arnold By now, any techno head should know that Anthony "Shake" Shakir was one of the music's creators. It's hard to resist mentioning that he had a track on that first Detroit techno compilation, that he put out a record on Metroplex, and so on. But the recent Frictionalism compilation on Rush Hour demonstrates that his significance doesn't stop there. While Shake's profile may not have blown up like some of his neighbors, his recorded output has arguably been more consistent than any other techno producer. Remarkably, his [...]

Smokey. One word that means a whole lot to adults over the age of thirty. If you want a taste of just how passionate people feel about Smokey, visit the comments section of a BoL write-up on Smokey back on my birthday, March 24, 2008—damn, BoL is getting old. In internet years we're senior citizens because one earth year is like a decade in computer terms. But today we're discussing Smokey and love songs, not computers and the internet. William 'Smokey' Robinson was born February 19, 1940 in Detroit. [...]

In the late 90's Jack White was in numerous short lived bands such as, Goober and the Peas, The Go, Two-Star Tabernacle in the Detroit area, he was also working as an upholsterer. He was working in an apprenticeship with a family friend Brian Muldoon in Detroit, Michigan. The two formed a short lived band and released a seven inch. Jack White played guitar, covered vocals and piano, while Muldoon covered the drums and created sounds utilizing a worm gear saw. The seven inch, which would be titled Makers of High Grade Suites , was released in they year [...]
Simply amazing, KiD CuDi now in the video for the remix to Dan Blacks "Symphonies". It looks like this was a full blown collaboration of Cudder, Dan, and the production team who shot and edited the video in the first place. The result is as shown above, a seamless and beautifully remastered version of the already amazing music video. Watch the original video here , and drop your thoughts. You can also get your fix for this song, if you haven't already done so in the past, by following the link to the original video. yeahzah
Do you like pure, unadulterated buzz ? Well, you just may have a chance to experience it live in all its glory, Pitchfork reports. That's because Georgia's Washed Out , Long Island's Small Black , and Denver's Pictureplane will be joining each other on an upcoming national tour stretching through March into early April (including an extended stop at SXSW). It's an unholy trifecta of hipitude — indeed, two members of Small Black's live band work for Pitchfork , for goodness' sake. Will Smith's line in [...]
While Frank Black has been keeping fans happy with everything the Pixies are up to, he hasn't forgotten about himself. In fact, he'll continue his solo work with the release of his new album, NonStopErotik , on April 6th. His first full-length record since 2007's Bluefinger , the effort contains 11 tracks, including a cover of the Flying Burrito Brothers' "Wheels." But, perhaps most interesting, is the fact that the latest endeavor was recorded in Brooklyn, L.A., and a "haunted studio in London." On working in the spooky environment, Black [...]

André Obin performs at the Middle East Upstairs A few months ago, I did a concert review of Stars and Track of Field when they played at Middle East Upstairs in Cambridge, MA. I really dug the opening act, who I referred to as "mystery noise man." Well, good news, we tracked him down to see what he's all about. His real name is André Obin, and after a somewhat lengthy conversation, it's altogether too ironic that a true-to-life enigma was already a mystery from the start. It's hard to [...]

The Sound and The Fury: Update 2 (Read Update 1) So I cheated... I read the Wikipedia page on this book after reading the Quentin section. It gave me comfort to know I am not alone. Quentin and this section are screw-ups. Figure myself to pretty savvy with the post-mod stuff, since I'm toting around a copy of A Thousand Plateaus most days, but putting the pieces of that together was difficult. To say Faulkner throws the reader into the [...]
