Orange Make Dominating Early Season Statement

Orange Make Dominating Early Season Statement I'm not yet ready to anoint the 2009-10 edition of Syracuse Orange basketball the best team since their 2003 championship; heck, it's probably a little premature to call them better than last year's Sweet 16 version, led by lottery pick Jonny Flynn. But there's no doubt in my mind that this is one of the best defensive teams I've ever seen at the Cuse. And they are off to one hell of a start. One night after dominating #12 Cal, they dismantled defending national champion UNC by an 87-71 margin, sparked by a 20-1 start of the second half that [...]

Roll Credits

Roll Credits By Carrie Brownstein As Bob Boilen, host of All Songs Considered , put it in a text message to me this afternoon, "The [end of the decade] series has been great. Overwhelming, but great." When we at Monitor Mix and NPR Music began our end-of-the-decade endeavor two weeks ago, I don't think any of us knew that we'd basically be publishing an online magazine. But, hey, we did! We put up 72 posts in 10 days! And we're very proud of it! So I'd [...]

Twisted Tales: Redbone Bring Native American Pride (and Controversy) to Radio

Twisted Tales: Redbone Bring Native American Pride (and Controversy) to Radio Filed under: Twisted Tales If you called a Native American "Redbone" at the Thanksgiving table, you might get a drumstick upside the head. But in the late 1960s, when American Indians were reclaiming cultural pride alongside other minorities, two brothers sharing Cherokee, Apache and Shoshone blood defiantly took the term Redbone for the name of their band. The brothers already had a fairly impressive résumé in the music business by the time they decided to make their heritage an asset. Born Pat and Lolly Vasquez in Fresno, Calif., they adopted [...]

Italian experimental americana from Guano Padano (a cover of Hank Williams' classic "Ramblin Man")

GUANO PADANO featuring ALESSANDRO ALESSANDRONI
This is a weird little post for Friday. Weird because I haven't ever written about an Italian band before. And weird because the band in question plays an experimental brand of americana that has more in common with Ennio Morricone (in fact they signe dup his iconic whistler to appear on this record) than it does with Johnny Cash. But don't worry these guys have been anointed by John Convertino and Joey Burns (Calexico) so rest assured you're getting some pretty cool shit. The band (a trio) is called Guano Padano and their [...]

Gucci Mane:

Even though Gucci Mane is locked up and won't be able to promote it, his label is still releasing The State vs. Radric Davis on Dec. 8. How on Earth Did This Movie Slip by Us?

Hey, Townspeople! Last night the G-friend and I curled up on the sofa to watch a movie and wolf down some primo home-cooked chow. She was in the mood for something highbrow, but I was curious about a flick I'd had in the "not sure about this movie" drawer for a couple of weeks. Because she's such a sweetheart, she let me watch my movie of choice, even though it gave off the distinct limburger pong of idiocy. The movie in question? Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story . [...]

Kidd Kidd:

New Orleans rapper Kidd Kidd was inexplicably not credited for his short (and terrible) guest verse on Lil Wayne's 2008 hit "Mrs. Officer" -- a few people initially assumed it was Bobby Valentino, who crooned that song's hook, rhyming -- but his career appears to be on the upswing: in a feature on MTV.com today, Kidd stressed the importance of a good work ethic, revealed that he was on the original version of Drake's hit "Forever," and was lauded by 50 Cent producer Sha Money XL. Former OKC Radio Host Lisa Mirick Dead at 47

Lisa Mirick , former on-air personality for KQOB-FM 96.9 and KRXO-FM 107.7, passed away Tuesday in Savannah, Georgia, at the age of 47. Mirick was a 23-year radio broadcast veteran in Oklahoma City. Her last radio job was at KQOB, alongside Ron Benton, where she became infamous following a profanity-laced on-air tirade on December 13, 2004. She was given a second chance with the station, but left in June 2006 because of personal problems. "We are all shocked. Lisa was truly loved by her many listeners." - Chris Baker, [...]

Fantastic M. Fox, Par Wes Anderson

Fantastic Mr. Fox Movie Official Trailer 2 HD

Faces to reunite w/o Rod Stewart

The Faces now appear set to embark on a reunion tour in 2010, but not in the way one would probably hope for. Despite comments to the contrary, frontman Rod Stewart will not join former bandmates guitarist Ron Wood, keyboardist Ian McLagan and drummer Kenney Jones on any of the band's upcoming ventures, McLagan has confirmed to Billboard.com . "If we don't do it very soon, one of us is gonna check out," McLagan explaines. "I'm 64, for chrissakes! We've been waiting and waiting for Rod to say yes; now he's finally said [...]
