In the Book Notes series, authors create and discuss a music playlist that relates in some way to their recently published book. Blake Butler is the rare young writer who consistently and effectively challenges his readers. Scorch Atlas is a haunting collection of interconnected stories and vignettes, a dystopian work of genius. The book itself is a work of art. The internal pages are individually distressed, and the page edges and cover appear burnt and scarred, and the design complements the book's theme perfectly. Matt [...]
Coachella isn't the only music event already deep into planning for next year's festivities. As already particularity evident, the U.K. based All Tomorrow's Parties has already set itself up for one hell of a 2010, having tapped none other than the recently reunited Pavement and Simpsons creator Matt Gorening to serve as curators. The former revealed its first few selections a little while back , while he latter offered his first round of choices just yesterday (Nov. 18). So, who'd Mr. Groening pick? The Raincoats, Toumani Diabate, Danielson, James Blackshaw, Anni Rossi, and Viv Albertine's [...]
Nice Nice of Portland, Oregon are to release a Ronseal of a single on 23rd of this month, entitled One Hit . It's a highly charged battering ram of a song in the Boredoms/Battles mould and will be available on 7" vinyl for the purists and free download for those with a record shop phobia, which is nice. Apparently, they're an exciting force live so make sure you catch them on one of the following dates: Thu 26th Nov/ London / 93 feet east w/ Wavves Fri [...]

TLOBF reports : All Tomorrow's Parties announced Mr. Matt Groening, that guy behind the Simpsons and Futurama, as a curator for ATP UK Weekend 1 at Butlins, Minehead on May 7th – 9th 2010, some time back, but had yet to confirm which acts he'd chosen to play. Well, the wait is over as he's picked the first acts for his weekend: BOREDOMS performing Boadrum – 9 Drummer Show The Raincoats Toumani Diabate Danielson (formerly Danielson Family) James Blackshaw Anni Rossi Viv Albertine's Limerence (formerly of The Slits) [...]

Hella active drummer Zach Hill's in (and has been in) more bands than you want to try to list, but we've most recently caught him helping out Boredoms and Marnie Stern and toughening up Wavves (more on that in a sec) when not releasing his own " solo " material. In Chll Pll Hill he does what the band's name suggests, joining forces, calming down (a bit), and harmonizing with Hexlove's Zachary Nelson, who layers lapping electronics (complete with dark/"funky"/sometimes gentle pop hooks) over submerged drum play. You get a taste in the self-directed strobed video [...]
Recently took in the well-conceived All Tomorrow's Parties documentary- a film incorporating Super8, camcorder and mobile phone footage contributed by filmmakers, fans and musicians from the cult festival's history with major contributions from Jonathan Caouette and Vincent Moon. Featured in the film are performances from Battles, Sonic Youth, Belle And Sebastian, Patti Smith, Animal Collective, Grinderman, Iggy and the Stooges, Portishead, Mogwai, Slint, Grizzly Bear, The Yeah Yeah Yeahs, The Gossip, Daniel Johnston and The Boredoms. The ATP festival is unique for its band and fan curated lineups, lack of corporate sponsorships, and country club [...]

Seefeel are a post-rock group (whatever you take to mean by that term). They get on these pages as they were quite influential in their quiet way and becuase they were on the sainted Warp Records for a short while. Seefeel formed during 1992 in London, England; with Mark Clifford on guitar, Mark Van Hoen on bass, Justin Fletcher on drums and Sarah Peacock on vocals and guitar. During 1992, Mark Van Hoen was replaced by Daren Seymour on bass. They released their first EPs and first album on [...]

The recent release of OOIOO's sixth studio album Armonico Hewa represents fresh evidence, if anybody needs it, that Yoshimi P-We's all-woman noise outfit is more than a Boredoms side project.
Meet noise rock duo Lightning Bolt . Two namesakes from Providence, Rhode Island whose abrasive drum and bass double fisting (metaphorically speaking of course) make Death From Above's fuzzed out din sound like chopped and screwed lullabies for insomniacs. We chatted to drummer Brian Chippendale about their forthcoming Australian tour, Visa trouble in Japan, Bjork and Freudian band roles. Just for people who don't know, how did you guys form? We formed at an art school, here in Province, both studying Visual Arts and I was two years ahead of him. In [...]

OOIOO Armonico Hewa (2009, Thrill Jockey) RIYL = Gang Gang Dance, Boredoms, Ponytail I understand that the Boredoms are pretty much experimental psych rock deity, but I have to admit that I have always preferred OOIOO (the band which Boredoms drummer, Yoshimi P-We (yes, that Yoshimi), created after the Boredoms kind of evaporated). And OOIOO absolutely, positively kill it on Armonico Hewa . It appears that as we sneak closer to the year's end things are only picking up speed. The last couple of months have just been stellar. And now we have [...]

Seizensetsu by Hi-Posi 2000, 13 tracks at 43 min. Buy CD Sample RATING: 4.6 out of 5 Man, does anyone else feel like having a seizure right now? I sure do, but it may just be the Hi-Posi. If there was ever an album designed to have you dance like a Pichu fed by gavage, then this is it (keep track of all the Pokémon references in this review, true believers!). [...]

Pan Sonic are Finnish. Originally Panasonic before having to make the inevitable name change. They make noisy abrasive music. The most famous act to originate from Sähkö Recordings , Panasonic (now called Pan sonic), first came into being in the summer of 1993 through the meeting of two creative minds, Mika Vainio (born 1963) and Ilpo Väisänen (born 1963 in Kuopio, Finland). Vainio had worked as a DJ in the 80's and created his own music with Pertti Grönholm, as Corporate 09. Väisänen was originally from Kuopio, Finland [...]
by BBG DOWNLOAD: Megasus - "Paladin Vs. Berserker" (MP3) Although he plays (an oddly outfitted) bass in Lightning Bolt , Brian Gibson is the DRUMMER for Megasus . While Lightning Bolt toils in the outer reaches of spazzy noise, Megasus is an entirely different animal (pun!), resembling something closer to High On Fire than Boredoms. The Providence band self-released their [...]

[VIdeo] OOIOO - Sol
[ Check out a song from The Flaming Lips' Embryonic below; legally! ] If you thought the middling Christmas On Mars film would leave The Flaming Lips wriggling in popularity limbo you obviously don't realize how powerful they've become since Soft Bulletin was released. Even a so-so album -- did anyone really, truly love At War with Mystics ? -- hasn't deterred a nation of technicolor-hungry Lips devotees from anticipating Embryonic [...]
