McClatchy Newspapers (MCT) -- KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The Bottle Rockets have been a hard-touring bar band for almost 17 years. Back when they started, the Rockets were thrown together with other bands in the fledgling '90s alternative-country genre, thanks mostly to founder and front man Brian Henneman and his association with Uncle Tupelo. But more than just a country-ish band with a punk/rock attitude, the Bottle Rockets are Midwesterners - Festus, Mo., is their hometown - with rock...

Please forgive me if the following lacks the laconic quality of my usual work. I find myself distracted by the fact that Slayer will be unleashing World Painted Blood, their latest paean to all things dark and distasteful, on November 3rd. How excited am I? Let's just say there's a tune called Public Display Of Dismemberment! This is shaping up to be the best Thanksgiving ever at Casa de Luftmensch. The Bottle Rockets - Lean Forward ... I was equally shocked and pleased to discover that [...]

N ew York roots rock stalwart Greg Trooper has a new record out later this month, well almost new, the tracks were originally recorded in the Spring of '95 by Eric "Roscoe" Ambel at Coyote Studios in Williamsburg -Brooklyn, circumstances at the time resulted in Trooper upping sticks and moving down to Nashville leaving the record unfinished, now back in the Big Apple the guys got back together again to apply the finishing touches to the album. Despite Trooper having his songs recorded [...]

Loving this record from The Allendales, titled "Low Morals and High Standards" the record has ten original tracks and from the opening "Electric Nights" to the finale "Someday Soon" they're all top quality, blending roots and rock'n'roll to create archetypal whiskey drenched alt-country tunes, laden with catchy hooks and great melodies, the band draw from a range of influences, Cracker, early Wilco, Tom Petty, The Bottle Rockets and have created a strong debut album, that promises much for future releases. The band are a five-piece from Lincoln - NE, Ken Morton [...]
Buddhist monks blessing the crowd in the wee hours of the morn. For the Bon Iver preformance review jump to where is says BON IVER. So I think everyone has a little Goth in them and why not? I mean there is darkness all around in the media in our daily lives in general. Justin Vernon must have a little more than the average Cure fan. Look at his lyrics: "Only love is all maroon Lapping lakes like leery loons Leaving rope [...]

Hollis Brown- "Show Love" (MP3) How I wish Hollis Brown was the house band at my neighborhood tavern! My quality of life would improve significantly. The New York City-based act provides the perfect soundtrack for throwing back drinks, shooting pool and just hanging out with friends. I'd actually rather have Hollis Brown playing down the street every night than many better-known and more accomplished like-minded acts. I'd feel compelled to listen intently to Son Volt. I'd get overly involved in the interactive material of Roger Clyne and the Peacemakers. [...]
