Tori Amos's holiday album, Midwinter Graces , is in stores tomorrow, as is the Pixies 17-disc Minotaur box set. Among the discs that have already been sent my way, I can definitely recommend Caroline Herring's Golden Apples of the Sun , Hyperstory's self-titled album , Loch Lomond's Night Bats , and Robyn Hitchcock's live album, I Often Dream of Trains in New York (CD & DVD) . Reissues this week [...]

Love As Laughter on Me + You Freeform Brooklyn radio station Viva Radio has certainly earned bragging rights for their new compilation, The Best of Me + You Vol. 1 . Sunday's are designed for one thing: being lazy. For the greater Chicago population, this past Sunday was anything but that. Instead, it was all about sweating off those Lobster Corn Dogs, wearing down those already worn out Chucks, and irritating those well-established sunburns from Saturday's "fun in the sun." But that summarizes every closing day at Lollapalooza - it's what gives each festivalgoer that merit badge by sundown. And if we've learned anything from Cub (or Girl) Scouts, those badges don't come easy. Grant Park didn't make it any easier, either. As the hours skated by, and the [...]

The Rolling Stones Box Set collects 13 remastered post-1971 albums from the band, with space for next year's release of the remastered Exile on Main Street . In a slow week for marquee releases, I have heard and can definitely recommend Starflyer 59's Ghosts of the Past , Howling Bells' Radio Wars , Kevin Hearn's Havana Winter , and Kieran Kane's Somewhere Beyond the Roses . Putumayo continues to put together amazing world music [...]

I hate the TV. Maybe this is due to the inevitable descent into grumpy old manhood, though I prefer to think that it stems from a certain good taste that comes with a longer time on this planet. Whatever the case, I can't stand to watch television these days. With very rare exceptions it seems that every time I turn on the idiot box I'm attacked by a sit com or drama featuring one of a handful of tired plots or a ridiculously melodramatic tabloid news program or - what I am convinced is a mark of the end [...]

Regina Spektor's new album Far pushes the singer-songwriter even closer to pop superstardom without sacrificing any of the melodic or lyrical wit that is so endearing. Drive-By Trucker Patterson Hood's second solo album, Murdering Oscar (and Other Love Songs) , is in stores tomorrow. God Help The Girl features songs written by Stuart Murdoch ( Belle and Sebastian ) for female singers. Other albums I have heard and can strongly [...]

On June 2nd, 2009 Neil Young released Archives Volume 1 . The set which comes in three formats (CD, DVD and Blu-Ray) chronicles Young's career from 1963-1972. This is a collection featuring previously unreleased material, alternate mixes and material previously found on Young's albums that has been in the works since 1989. The CD version of the box set contains 8 CD's, while the DVD and Blu-Ray sets have 10 discs. Also the DVD & Blu-Ray sets have previously unreleased live footage and bonus material not found on the CD version. Since the set only covers 1963-1972, that is [...]
In the Book Notes series, authors create and discuss a music playlist that relates in some way to their recently published book. Amelia Gray's AM/PM is a collection of flash fiction, stories that create tangible worlds and interesting characters in their 50 to 150 words. More importantly (and amazingly), read together these stories form a cohesive and often surprising narrative through their recurring themes and characters. Tobias Carroll wrote of the book: "Reading AM/PM , the first collection of short stories from Austin's [...]

So, I've become a full fledged juuornalisst. Lars from The Intelligence was nice enough to let me "interview" him. Basically, I sendt him some not so great, and some good questions by mail, and he answered. (Photo taken in Barcelona last week at the Primavera Sound festival..more on that later) So here it is in all its Pulitzer price winning glory: CMA: Tell us a little about your background. How and where did you get started [...]

Grizzly Bear's Veckatimest has received glowing reviews from almost everyone. Easily my most anticipated album of 2009, Veckatimest deserves the accolades and is easily my favorite album of the year so far. Other releases I have heard and can strongly recommend this week include A Hawk and a Hacksaw's Deliverance , Jenny Owen Youngs' Transmitter Failure , Sharon Van Etten's Because I Was in Love , and Viva Voce's [...]

So, how many times can we get updated on the Danger Mouse, Sparklehorse, David Lynch Collab album Dark Night Of The Soul on one week? Not once , not twice , but three times . Wilco was also on the non-humble tip this week, Brian Williams padded his indie cred with Deer Tick and we just might have found the next Wavves before he even hits puberty. All that, while we premiered a ton of great music , chilling with Trash [...]

[Photo by Keith McArthur] Way back in November of last year we profiled one of the hardest working diy collectives in the Midwest , Lawrence Kansas' Chomp Womp . This past weekend, one of the main artists behind CW - Baby Birds Don't Drink Milk - e-mailed us to give an update of their summer plans, and man are they busy. Until we actually get the new music in hand, we'll leave you with the BBDDM song "Fort Pork Chop" and their summer [...]

The Wal-Mart by my house is an absolute circus. If it's not the grossly understaffed work force, it's the whining kids and generally bile-bubbling flutter of cost cutting tension. Even with all of the mayhem associated with a simple trip to Wally Mart, there are even more factors that raise my ire to dangerous levels. Okay, I snore. I'm not going to be shy about it. When I pass out, especially after a night of booze, you don't really want to be anywhere near me unless you have an iPod turned all the way up. A guy like me needs [...]
Spring time. Flowers, baby chicks, and Easter Egg Hunts. When a young man's fancy turns to love or a young Rippler's fancy turns to finding some new cool sounds to bring in that mellow, fresh, birds-are-singing, flowers-are-blooming, tree-are-greening vibe. (Yeah, I don't know what that last one meant either, but you get the gist.) It's spring and we at the Ripple are fired up. The beach outside our office window looks warm and invitin g and we need some music to play on our iblaster. [...]
