Austin, TX gauzy rockers The Boxing Lesson are plotting out a very busy 2010 for themselves. The band are getting ready to release an EP tentatively titled Rings Of Saturn as well as a full length which may or may not be called Possibilities when it comes out. They currently have three brand new demos up at their Myspace page. In particular, "Long Time Possibility" shows a new found pop

![[MP3] Stricken City: "Small Things"](http://cache.elbo.ws/posts/2099104_lg.jpg)
Stricken City 's newest album, Songs About People I Know , dropped today on The Kora Records , and while I have not heard the entire album yet, the preview tracks provide plenty of incentive to do so. So I'm paying it forward and giving you guys the opportunity to hear from this London quartet in the hopes that you may indeed check out the full album. Rebekah Raa's vocals are raw and uninhibited, and the jumpy, frenetic backing sound give us one hell of a caffeine tune. A heavily electronic influence meshes with harder rock [...]

Isn't it amazing how time flies when you're having fun. The Devil's favourite independent label Filthy Little Angels, a label that shares the Devil's commitment to unearthing unknown, unheard, unseen, unheralded, unfamiliar or downright unbelievable bands new or old, is five year old! Five years of independence, five years of eclecticism, an average of twenty releases each year, five years of brilliance. To celebrate their fifth birthday the brains behind the label, Woon and Missy and the excellent Captain Polaroid (CP) took time out from opening the presents and stuffing their faces with jelly and [...]
![[MP3] Kurt Vile: "Hunchback"](http://cache.elbo.ws/posts/1973215_lg.jpg)
Who ever said rock music is dead? I did. And it's mostly true. Listen to a mainstream rock station lately? Eeesh... Luckily people like Kurt Vile are here to save the crippled genre. The Philly native is looking to release his first solo record, Childish Prodigy , on Matador this October, and the label has been kind enough to release the LP's lead track, "Hunchback." Aw, hey thanks! It crunches and snarls and rolls along like any good Rock 'n' Roll song ought to. It almost seems like the love-child of 70s classic rock and the 00s blues rock [...]

There is nothing explicitly bad about Wild Beasts ' newest, Two Dancers. The songs move along nicely, flow well enough into each other, and keep up a consistent tone. The musicianship is entirely adequate. The problem? There's nothing exciting. And so it goes. The only notable issue I have with the album is its lyricism, which ranges from acceptable to, um, gems like these, from "The Fun Powder Plot:" "This is a booty call; my boot up your arse hole. / This is a Freudian slip; my slipper in your bits." [...]

[Busy weekend ahead? You bet. Happy birthday to Nina Persson on Sunday — and happy birthday to Paul Waclawsky of the Boxing Lesson (who play Spaceland tonight) — and here goes ...] Today: It's the Happy Hollows' release party for "Spells" at Spaceland, and their fine support includes the Pity Party , the Boxing Lesson and the Health Club . ... Whispertown 2000 , with the Belle Brigade , headlines the Echo. ... And Amy Kuney opens for Blueskyreality at [...]

The Happy Hollows' debut album "Spells" is at turns exhilarating, experimental and excruciating — as if the Pixies, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Bikini Kill and Bis got together to compare anxiety attacks. Its yelpy, guitar-spiked sketches, couched every so often by unfailingly catchy shout-along choruses, are at least nervy, if not downright neurotic. It's far too good an album to have almost vanished into the ether, but that's what nearly happened: The Hollows' record deal with Nettwerk evaporated earlier this year, leaving the L.A. trio contemplating its own future before deciding, finally, to send "Spells" out into the [...]

[Happy birthday, Jonesy. We miss your jukebox ...] Keeping it very brief today: Which legend you wanna see? Patti Smith plays a free show at the Santa Monica Pier, while the Pretenders , joined by Cat Power , are at the Greek Theatre. .... Nine Inch Nails plays the second of its four SoCal shows at the Music Box @ Fonda. ... There's the 415 Records reunion show at the Knitting Factory with Wire Train , Translator and [...]

This week is not as overwhelmingly crowded as last week, but still some fantastic shows.... Monday 8/31/09 [Pick of the Night] Black Joe Lewis & the Honeybears / Extra Golden @ Troubadour ($15) – If you're a big fan of Stax soul, check out Black Joe Lewis. His last show at the Troubadour was one of the my favorite live sets of the year. [Recommended] Local Natives / The Henry Clay People / Aushua / Fun @ Spaceland (Free) – The [...]
One of my favorite bands from the Silver Lake scene is The Happy Hollows . Always energetic and enigmatic, they're a power-trio who inspire their crowds to rock out as much off the stage as they do on. (Read our review of their DC show last year here .) Plus, they're all incredibly nice people, with an incredible sense of humor (Sarah Negahdari is definitely in the running for the "cool as Kim Deal" award for sure), so double-win. The Hollows are heading out on the road for a handful of dates to support their first [...]

Here are our recommendations for the week. Wednesday is a good one with not one but two events co-sponsored by none other than... well us. Hopefully all our fellow bloggers can make it out to the Bleet Up on Wednesday and then after that out to the Parish. It's our last show for a minute so get on it! Monday (7/27): Stellastarr*, Wild Light and Experimental Aircraft at The Parish Iron and Wine and Glen Hasnard (Swell Season/The Frames) at [...]

So I have a tendency to check record label websites quite often for new music that I may have missed. And one of my favorite labels is Morr Music , which rarely fails to bring gorgeous electronic pop. Point being, I was browsing Morr recently and found It's A Musical! And upon first listen to "The Music Makes Me Sick" I promptly threw my head against the wall. Meaning the music sucked, right? Wrong! I was so mad at myself I hadn't heard of this German duo before I needed to take my anger out physically. But [...]
