Terrorizing the streets with their subsonic, teeth shattering music, I introduce to you a new team (for lack of a better word), The Get Hype Collective . Who?What? is this you may ask... well, these bass goons are a collaboration of live acts, djs, designers, bloggers and promoters, driven by the art of big room beats (from electro to dubstep and everything in between). This all star lineup consists of: Jeuce , Toast , Yoghurt Warrior (aka dJ Sharkbait), Pond Life , and Dave Verne [...]

"The Killers recorded this cover version of the classic Eagles hit as part of their contribution to raise awareness and funds for the APE charity which, in the last month alone, has made awards of $100,000 to support both the natural disasters in Asia Pacific and the UK-based climate change group The Transition Network. Recorded with the APE house band, Rhythms Del Mundo, 'Hotel California' has been given an Afro-Cuban treatment and is already a smash radio hit all over Europe". Leading up to the first release from `Rhythm Del [...]
The Note Books series features musicians discussing their literary side. Previous contributors have included John Darnielle , John Vanderslice , and others. Carolyn Mark has long been one of my favorite singer-songwriters, and she released her latest album, Let's Just Stay Here (a collaboration with NQ Arbuckle), last month. Mark also recently published her second cookbook , The Terrible Hostess, Recipes for Disaster Vol. II , so I asked her to list her favorite cookbooks. [...]

What an unmitigated disaster last week was. For a start, the Marina single is actually out on the 16 November (yeah, thanks nme.com!) and the much-touted and intermittently amazing Julian Casablancas album only went a missed the top 40 altogether. Just goes to show that oodles of 'proper' music press coverage (Musick included, naturellement) and a killer first single means diddly squat when your fanbase are only interested in the next album by the band you're meant to be fronting. The Nirvana reissue didn't shift many units either, but there was also a live album out [...]

This week's disaster theme came from a conversation I had with Blueback Birthday Boy Dylan last night, but for the life of me I can't remember how we got onto the subject of total cock-ups. I was DJing though, so maybe that had something to do with it. Actually, I know I've had an uneasy relationship with DJing in the past, but last night's effort was brilliant fun. It's all rather dependent on the occasion with me - too much of a dancefloor and it doesn't suit the general miserablism I'm into, whereas if it's supposed to be [...]

This week's disaster theme came from a conversation I had with Blueback Birthday Boy Dylan last night, but for the life of me I can't remember how we got onto the subject of total cock-ups. I was DJing later though, so maybe that had something to do with it. Actually, I know I've had an uneasy relationship with DJing in the past, but last night's effort was brilliant fun. It's all rather dependent on the occasion with me - too much of a dancefloor and it doesn't suit the general miserablism I'm into, whereas if it's supposed to [...]
Now, obviously everyone watches X Factor. Even Bauman and Björk watch X Factor. I know for a fact The Boy Least Likely To are fans of the national hub of identity that is this Saturday and Sunday evening social phenomenon. Anyway, so last year, I was devastated. My world was utterly rocked, and not in the good way, by the ongoings of X Factor. I vowed to hate it forever, but carry on watching, if only from a curious sociologists point of view ( ha ). When Laura White was [...]

Chiddy Bang is back with some much anticipated material from their upcoming mixtape "The Swelly Express" which is due out on the 29th of October. They've been at the top of our list for newcomers this year, with their strategic sampling of popular indie songs such as Passion Pits "Better Things" and more recently on their new track "All Things Go" sampling Sufjan Steven's "Chicago". The new mixtape "The Swelly Express" is been described by Chiddy Bang to be somewhat of an autobiography - a tale of two college kids breaking into the [...]

Here's a few tunes I felt you should listen to. Many of you may already have them but I've been lazy as fuck recently so get over it. Friday, I went to see Skream, Benga, Rusko & Scratch Perverts and it was a right night. Saturday, spent all day lying around recovering and hitting Crash Bandicoot on the old playstation. Don't deny it, the game is sick. almost as sick as this. Gets me every time and Friday I think I fucked my back skanking so hard. Benga is a badman. [...]

Things got off to a late start at (le) Poisson Rouge on Wednesday night. Opening act Woods took the stage at 11:30 and delivered a 45-minute set of spaced-out, lo-fi, psychedelic folk rock. Their songs are comprised of layers of heavily distorted vocals and dreamy effects looped over jangly guitars and bouncy '60s-style rock drums. At times, the band seemed to lose direction and wander away into aimless noodling, but they managed to rein everything back in before completely losing the audience's attention. The haunting distortion on Jeremy Earl's vocals and Jarvis Taveniere's [...]

Haven't checked my inbox for a while, and too be honest, I was surprised to find the vast amount of heavy tunes in there. First up were some new remixes from up and coming producer, Jakwob . There's something about his style that places him in a whole different genre to me. His knack of "beautifying" everything gives his remixes more of a story line. I'll leave the rest for you to interpret, enjoy! The Toxic Avenger- The Fall (Jakwob Remix) [...]

In the Book Notes series, authors create and discuss a music playlist that relates in some way to their recently published book. Libba Bray's novel Going Bovine , a modern day Don Quixote tale, hurtles through time and space with self-effacing humor. Mad cow disease, string theory, punk fairies, and animated lawn gnomes, combine with Bray's storytelling genius to produce one of the year's funniest and most surprisingly moving books. Catch Libba Bray reading (with Lev Grossman ) at the first edition of the Largehearted Lit reading series on [...]

2009 has been quite a year for Morrissey . He's toured relentlessly, performing to sold-out audiences around the world. His 9th studio album, Years Of Refusal , saw Morrissey tie his highest US chart debut on the Billboard 200, and he's overseen upgraded and remastered versions of his '90s works Southpaw Grammar and Maladjusted . Crowning what is undoubtedly his most productive year since his solo career began in 1988, [...]

[Wishing happy 40th birthday to Damon Gough, who's Badly Drawn Boy to most folks, and zooming into the weekend. I have keep this real brief this morning ...] Today: If you don't win the lotto and get into the Thom Yorke "rehearsal" at the Echoplex, there are a couple of other shows that have my heart atwitter: The Postmarks and Brookville at Spaceland, and World Party and Parade of Lights at the El Rey. ... There's also the release [...]

The live music highlight of last week was seeing Ross Flournoy at the Little Room at Largo. That's a great little spot to see music. With the future of the Broken West in doubt, it was great to see him perform a couple of new songs along with some Broken West classics. Monday 9/28/09 [Pick of the Night] Leslie and the Badgers / Sian Alice Group / Best Coast / Paperplanes @ The Echo (Free) – Night three of their Monday night residency. [Recommended] [...]
