hometapes : As much as we'd like to have Bill Murray at the top of our website for all of 2010, the past weeks have seen a wild tornado of excitement, organization, team-huddles, improvisation, and decision-making in the realm of Hometapes. This "realm" truly extends across the world, into bedrooms and offices and tour vans shared by the bands, artists, and extended family that make this all tick. We can't wait to tell you more about 2010. But, as one last ode to our favorite year yet, 2009, we had to be sure to [...]

Hey guys... It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas...well unless you're hear at POP! Stereo Central where it will be a balmy 74 degrees and we'll be wearing shorts! To celebrate this we're giving you a Christmas present of sorts...this week's Ten Tracks You Need is Christmas themed. Loads of tunes to have some eggnog to, unwrap presents, eat, etc. There's also a ton of full mixes for you to enjoy as well. There's enough music to get you through the rest of 2009! Enjoy and more importantly, have a great holiday folks. [...]

In 2009, Hometapes aptly demonstrated that they are a force to be reckoned with and a label to keep an eye on. They packed the year with great releases, some of which are likely to appear on my best of 2009 list, slated to go live late next week. To celebrate the holidays, they've done two things worth noting. First is Eight Days Of Christmas , which features Christmas tunes from eight Hometapes bands. Second is a Holiday sampler, which arrived in the form of a cassette via mail on Friday. [...]

Today's Christmas songs come courtesy of Hometapes . For the last eight days the Portland-based label has released a free Christmas song from a different artist. Stop by and listen around to all their other fine acts and see what they've been doing and digging this year. I meant to drape this little bit of tinsel a long time ago, but I'm space-y as Kevin this time of year and vulnerable to long bouts of eating, drinking and overall indulging. For instance, last night Penny and I indulged in a metric ton of taco chips and watched movies. Normally I'd stop eating at some point but HEY, IT'S THE HOLIDAYS. Hometapes know, perhaps more than anyone, that Christmas only comes but once a year, and must be celebrated to the utmost. Hence the creation of the Eight Days Of Hometapes series, eight Christmas/holiday tunes by [...]

Hometapes heads into the new year with the Eight Days of Hometapes and a 2009 tape sampler! Read All The Way To The Bottom For Info on 2009 Tape Sampler! "It's been a wild year. December always provides that high vantage point for looking back over the months before, as well as the not-so-distant views of the new year to come. We're definitely standing on top of [...]

In my honest opinion Jordon Zadorozy is one of the best songwriters out there. If it were up to me there would be a million FM radios out there playing his music from coast to coast. I was introduced to his music through his bands release "August Everywhere" and from that moment I was hooked. The record is heavily influenced by the likes of XTC and the Beach Boys with that Los Angeles delivery. Anyone that knows me will tell you I put this record in my 10 collection. The record is perfect from beginning to end with no filler. [...]
We remember a time when Rolling Stone used to do a wrap-up issue at the end of each year with their critics top ten. Now every website on the planet (including ours!) spews out their own, holier than thou list. But RS used to have the decency to ask the popular artists of the time to submit their own top ten lists, which were either good for a chuckle or a trip to the record store. In the spirit of sending you off to buy some new records, we've asked a few bands/musicians/writers to give us a [...]

While My Bloody Valentine, Ride and Lush were ruling the UK alternative music scene, Medicine was making similar music that was as good, if not better. They were quickly snapped up by Rick Rubin's then-fledgling label American in their effort to sign the "next big alternative band" in the U.S.. They proceeded to make a series of seminal records, but thanks to the dumbing of America, the U.S. music media and most American fans didn't get it. Brad Laner played created the sound that was Medicine and surrounded himself with a cast that would follow his lead. [...]

So at this time, there is no news to put out there. That doesn't mean there won't be any later. But what are you going to do till then? You have to have something to fill the gap. Well with that said, I have made a mixtape of stuff I have been listening to over the last six months. Some of the music is new and some of it is old. But what a great day to spend the day. It's a big week with new releases due from Six Organs of Admittance, Final, Helena Espvall Masaki Batoh, Brad Laner (Electric Company), and plenty more.

Every once in a while, the Los Angeles music scene churns out something that isn't total shit masked by perfect hair and vintage clothing. I think the last time I heard a good album from a band out of LA was before I even moved here, in '04. The Autolux record Future Perfect . That was a good one. It should come as no surprise then, that Autolux member Greg Edwards was also a member of a sadly unheralded (at least by modern standards, like the music blog) late-'90s psychedelic pop band Lusk. Along with Brad Laner [...]
In September of 2001, four guitarists united to form The Meeting Places. Based in L.A., Scott McDonald (lead guitar), Dean Yoshihara (now playing drums), Arthur Chan (now playing bass) and Chase Harris (lead vocals and rhythm guitar). Their first album, "Find Yourself Along The Way was released in 2003 and followed by Numbered Days in 2006. And thus concludes my dry, perfunctory history of this band. To truly understand this band you must listen, watch and feel the output of this organic creation. Once again, the best shoegazeyourfuzzbloodymarychai nslowdive music may be coming exclusively out of [...]
I haven't heard any of Brad Laner 's forthcoming disc for Home Tapes yet, but after browsing through his Tumbler site I came upon a video (created by brother Josh) that unveiled a new song. "Crawl Back In" features the most acoustic guitar I've ever heard on a Laner-related release, and it sounds really, really good -- kind of a summery backyard feel complete with distorted guitar and rich harmonies. The video below is just as easy to get [...]

According to a recent post on Twitter, Sea Wolf has finished album #2 with Bright Eyes bro Mike Mogis and will play Spaceland on September 5. I missed these guys. For all your live options and recommendations you should spend at least 20 minutes per week browsing You Set the Scene . There's a new [...]

I've mentioned this before to many friends and a few fellow musicians: The first half of 2009 has been the slowest and most sparse year for album releases that I can remember. I know the economy has played a big role with labels singing, and taking chances, on new bands, but isn't the best art created when your back is against the wall? You can't pay rent, life sucks, you're miserable and emotionally drained...what else is left? Art. Here are my favorite releases of the year so far: [...]
