Bubblegum Lemonade's Laz McCluskey collaborates with vocalist Sandra in the equally sugary-sounding noise-pop band Strawberry Whiplash. The two hail from Glasgow, Scotland, and have just released their second EP, Picture Perfect (Matinee). The follow-up to 2008's Who's In Your Dreams EP features four sunny tracks with sweet, girlish vocals and plenty of fuzz and reverb. [...]

By Frank Phosphate and Defensive Listening. The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart / Depreciation Guild / Cymbals Eat Guitars / Bubblegum Lemonade (Lola's): My life revolves around pop music, always has, probably always will. Especially pop that I will not so simply refer to as "independently produced forward thing pop," instead of that dreaded "indie-pop" term that we like to throw around so much. This pop music beast shows it self to me in varying, spectrum-bending ways. On one end of the spectrum [...]

Strawberry Whiplash Genre: Indie / Pop From: Glasgow, United Kingdom Sandra [...]
Matinée Recordings has released a new EP from Glasgow indie pop duo Strawberry Whiplash , "Picture Perfect" . This is their second release, after last year's wonderful "who's in your dreams". Strawberry Whiplash is Sandra and Laz , - the latter is also the man behind Bubblegum Lemonade , also on Matinée. When I listen to the wonderful title-track on this new EP, I get back the good feeling that I once had, driving around in my hometown on a sunny day, playing The Primitives loud in [...]

Lately I've been on this Primitives , Darling Buds , Rosehips kick. The last couple summer months if you'd have been over, you more than likely would have been subjected to the sweet sounds of fuzzy guitars that jangle a little and sweet vixen croons from the likes of Tracy Tracy, Andrea Lewis or Yoland. All of those bands were circa C-86, with the Primitives and Darling Buds going on a bit longer making records into the early 90's, but largely that sound has been in hibernation since then. Sure the Manhattan Suicides and [...]

Northern Portrait are a relatively new indie pop band. They formed only two years ago, yet as you'll find out (or perhaps, as you already know) they have released two EPs and are to release their very first album. They come from Denmark and are on the look for the best pop song. Apparently, they have come quite close to this. If you want to check some of their so far released tracks, just go to their MySpace and have a look. I invite you, while reading the interview, to push the play button for one [...]

Last Friday night presented itself with a difficult decision. I could either go see Animal Collective and Grouper (worth it just for Grouper), go see Black Moth Super Rainbow and School of Seven Bells, or support the local music scene and go to the $2 show. I chose BMSR and SVIIB, which I came to realize was an excellent choice. The show started off with School of Seven Bells, which turned out to be an excellent set. Walls and walls of noise were created by Benjamin Curtis [...]

BLACK MOTH SUPER RAINBOW Eating Us Label: Graveface Records (Release Date: 05/26/09) Pittsburgh's psych-electro experimental synth-pop group Black Mouth Super Rainbow are about to release their latest project, titled Eating Us on May 26, 2009. The members of this elusive quintet include [...]

Reviewing a Black Moth Super Rainbow record is ultimately kind of a ridiculous proposition. After all, this is a band that essentially puts out the same record over and over, release after release ( Pitchfork , in fact, leveled this very criticism at the band in a recent review). In the hands of many bands, this would most definitely be a bad thing...but criticisms like that just don't work here. So, the news is: this is more of the same. And I, for one, certainly couldn't be happier. [...]

The new album, Eating Us , from Pittsburgh's Black Moth Super Rainbow is not set to be released by Chicago's Graveface Records until May 23, but the excitement is already building. To see quotes that this will be the bands "break out" year seems somewhat insulting, but I suppose the band could take their sound and careers to another level. Fans can reserve a Limited-Edition (2,000 copies) Deluxe Version Of 'Eating Us' now, and that edition will include a 16-page art booklet and hairy summer jewel case jacket. You can reserve a copy here [...]

Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania's psych-pop outfit "poised to break out this year" ( Rolling Stone ) Black Moth Super Rainbow have a special treat for Record Store Day vinyl aficionados. On April 18, 2009, Graveface Records will release the 'Born On A Day' 7-inch, which comes with two versions of the eerie, swirling psychedelic first single "Born on a Day the Sun Didn't Rise" from their forthcoming album 'Eating Us' (Graveface 5/26) on 7-inch orange/red vinyl in a limited edition of just 500 copies. Side A is [...]

As I've said before , the work of Tobacco and Black Moth Super Rainbow extend beyond sonic horizons. The dichotemy, although similar, could not be more texturally different. Where Tobacco hits the grain, sliding coarse notes across the side of your body, Black Moth heals wounds through nurturing melodies and innocent vocoding. "Born On A Day The Sun Didn't Rise" is the first track we've heard off of Eating Us , due out next month, and although I am head-over-heels for Tobacco's production style, going with Dave Fridmann (The Flaming Lips, MGMT, Weezer) seems [...]

The Singles Collection is contributor Jason Jackowiak's weekly column focusing on rare and essential 7″ releases. We gladly accept all types of 7″ for consideration. Honestly, we don't really have the time or energy for a long, witty opening diatribe this week. Plus we're still in a half-sugar coma from Easter, so we'll let the stellar platters do the lion's share of the talking this week, which, should be easy, as we've got some real scorchers. Getting us started this week is the new single from [...]

Black Moth Super Rainbow , surely one of the trippiest groups around today, barring the ever-present Animal Collective, are set to release Eating Us on 3/26/2009, their fourth LP under that name. Note: They had a string of releases as 'Satanstompingcaterpillers' through the early 2000s. While the modern psychedelic-electro classic Start a People and the poppier Dandelion Gum found BMSR striving to mix colors and sound, a goal they achieved to excellent artistic effect, Eating Us sounds much like the cover looks- a monochromatic [...]

We're really excited about this new Black Moth album, so much that I'm even willing to listen to some hopeful imitations to pass the time. Creeping out from the dark woods of Pennsylvania into the perhaps-even-darker clubs and showplaces of America, Black Moth Super Rainbow act as a singular rhythmic unit to a backdrop of off-key lighting, original schizoid animation and thoroughly screwed video pieces, for no one in particular, but just for the pure, instinctual need to take the show on the road and feed that unique muse of theirs. With Tobacco, [...]
