Sing Me to Sleep Dean & Britta have provided a remix of the track International Velvet Theme to The Right Track: Tunes to Target Cancer which is "a series of concerts, events, and music download[s ...] to help raise funds for rare and underfunded cancers". The series also includes tracks by Ween, Linda Thompson, Buffalo Tom and The Cowbly Junkes (and more). And while we'rementioning Dean & Britta's sharity contributions a quick reminder that they have also have a track on the forthcoming Sing Me to Sleep compilation of "Indie [...]
... And we're back. Sorry for the silence on the blog the last few weeks. I was pretty consumed with campaign work for most of the latter half of January (and the beginning of February), and didn't have much in the way of free time to devote to the blog. However, now that the primaries are over, things are essentially back to normal, so hopefully the blog will be too. Anyway, here's what's going on in Chicago this week in terms of shows. Not a huge week, at least in terms of stuff I'm looking [...]
Phish became my favorite band in 1994 and since that time they've remained my favorite band, but just before I got into the world of jam my favorite band was The Lemonheads. Evan Dando's power-pop outfit captured my attention with their quick and catchy tunes that resonated with this young kid from the Jersey suburbs. Last Friday night, I relived my youth when I caught Evan Dando at Maxwell's in Hoboken, NJ. Evan Dando @ Maxwell's - Hannah and Gabi My older sister got me into [...]

Buffalo Tom is a band from Boston that was out there in the early 90s making some great alternative of the era kinds of rock records just like this one, and they actually made a bit of a comeback releasing a new record Three Easy Pieces back in 2007 (which, I have to admit, I have not heard). This record is a good typical kind of showing for them, with a more polished sound and songwriting style than with their early, early material, but a little more raw than their most polished, but still with [...]
These days, the words music and charity have been synonymous with another, and of course for good reason. The latest example comes in the form of a brand new download series launched by TargetCancer, a non-profit organization devoted to helping fund research into rare and lesser known cancers. When given the assignment of writing about an album I should have heard in my quarter-century of music listening, I realized there are far too many albums that fit that category. I enlisted the help of friends on Facebook and in real life to tell me their thoughts on essential albums a music appreciator should have heard start to finish. My embarrassment grew more and more with each suggestion. How could there be so many?? And so many classics?! The Beatles, The Clash, Fugazi, The Rolling Stones. Yes, I had heard of these bands and have more than [...]
It seems camp Hold Your Horse Is is busy and awesome in equal measures and seeing as they're one of the exciting bands in the UK right now, we thought we would fill you in on what they're up to. This includes some special 405 news. They've announced UK tours dates with 'Crooked Mountain, Crooked Sea' for the end of March (see below). This includes a special 405/Windmill Showcase at the Brixton Windmill. Look out for more info on this as the line-up is gonna blow you away. [...]

Thelonious Monster is playing this Thursday, February 4, at the Echo in Los Angeles (click link for info and tickets). This stunning fact gives me the opportunity to wax philosophical about my love for the Monster, especially singer/songwriter, Bob Forrest . First off, as mentioned in the sidebar, "The Adios Lounge" is a song from Thelonious' 1992 album, Beautiful Mess , and features Bob duetting with Tom Freakin Waits . And my choosing a Thelonious Monster song was no accident. They're my favorite band of all-time, taking [...]

Today dawned steely grey and covered in snow. While it was nice to get a slow start, I feel a touch of the seasonal blues, unexpectedly. It's the right kind of day for the sad, slow beauty of AA Bondy . I fell in love with Bondy's music last year and almost named his When The Devil's Loose (2009, Fat Possum) one of my top albums of the year. Bondy wrote of it, evocatively, "To me [the album] sounds [...]
We were all set for Megadeth and Slayer to sonically blast away the skin from our faces with the "American Carnage" tour. And then Slayer's Tom Araya went and hurt his back and the whole thing got postponed . But not ones to disappoint fans, Megadeth is hitting the road this spring, according to our friends at the Rock It Out! blog . In honor of the 20th anniversary to their classic Rust In Peace album, Dave Mustaine and company will be playing the entire album in full [...]

Can I get a "fuck yeah!" Alright! Kids, you should listen to Your Favorite Trainwreck to hear how rock music should be played. The band is fronted by Jeff Caudill (ex-Gameface) and Michael "Popeye" Vogelsang (ex-Farside) and also features Robbie Rist (seriously he's the guy who, as a kid, played Cousin Oliver on The Brady Bunch) on drums and Jeff Holmes on bass. Their four song demo isn't complicated but it is 100% fuckin' awesome! It's just good ol' fashioned rock music with hints of alt-country and bits of the punk these guys are better [...]
My sister introduced me to the most amazing alternative bands in the late '80s/early '90s including Buffalo Tom, Juliana Hatfield, the Mighty Mighty Bosstones, The Cure, R.E.M. & The Lemonheads. I took to Evan Dando's passionate power pop from the first time she played me It's A Shame About Ray. She took me to a Lemonheads show at the Roseland Ballroom in 1993 and I get to return the favor next week when Dando kicks off his solo tour at Maxwell's in Hoboken where this clip of It's About Time was filmed... [...]

Here's my ultimate music festival and it would be either on a remote island, or at Golden Gate Park in August. There are old and new, alive and dead, and everything in between, so I can only dream. Oh yeah, there would only be 500 people because that way I am less likely to be standing next to the drunk girl that keeps talking, the guy with his shirt off pointing his index finger randomly in the air, or the couple that just ate some chocolates and laughs at everything slow and dark. I am truly excited about [...]
STARK vs. THE ROADSIDE GRAVES Photos by Karp In advance of tomorrow's stacked bill of The Roadside Graves, Blair, Avi Buffalo, The Loom, and Sam Walsh and the National Reserve , the Stark squad caught The Graves on an equally great bill at The Mercury Lounge opening for The Rural Alberta Advantage last weekend . The New Jersey rock band leaned heavily on songs from their fantastic '09 record [...]

So it's all been building up to this after Andrew scored the exclusive scoop that Dr. Dog had signed to Anti Records months and months ago. Shame Shame comes out April 6th with a 10 week tour to follow (after the jump). The press release promises that: The stylistic reference points of Dr. Dog remain on Shame, Shame but with a darker tone. It's an album whose themes of doubt, confusion and unanswered questions are soothed by bright harmonies, taut guitar riffs and soaring melodies. [...]

Welcome to the first in the new series which features guest postings from a small team of correspondents. Today's words of wisdom come from John Greer , currently residing in East Lothian in Scotland, but someone who was born and raised on the other side of the Forth Estuary in the Kingdom of Fife. And it focuses on someone never featured before on TVV...... "AN ARCHITECT OF SOUND..." Paul Morley [...]
