Filed under: Twisted Tales Aspiring country music singer Johnny Horton was in rural Milano, Texas, when he heard a radio report that his friend Hank Williams had died of heart failure in the back seat of a Cadillac. It was New Year's Day, 1953. Williams had played his last gig at Austin's Skyline Club. The two men had met on the 'Louisiana Hayride,' the popular radio show that took Williams back after he'd been kicked off the 'Grand Ole Opry.' Horton, then 27, was a former star athlete who dropped [...]

Have being enjoying the latest offering from the mighty Drive-by Truckers " T he Fine Print " , a collection of rarities, covers and alternate versions that will be the band's final release on New West, it doesn't sound like it should - it somehow manages to remain a pretty cohesive record despite the disparate origin of it parts, the highlights for me, a stellar version of Uncle Frank , the brilliant "George Jones Takin' Cell Phone Blues" and "TVA". Some of the tracks got me going on a little DBT nostalgia trip, [...]
I've been spending a lot of time recently combing through Pitchfork's list of the top 500 songs of the decade, but one thing that has annoyed me is that I can't find a site that actually lists all 500 songs on one page. I'm tired of having to scroll through page after page. So, I'm doing it myself. Here's the complete list, republished merely as a reference. Go to www.pitchfork.com to see the full presentation with song reviews, artwork, and audio clips. 500. The Big Pink - "Velvet" 499. N.E.R.D. - "Run to the [...]

"Pitching is the art of instilling fear." - Sandy Koufax How many hits did Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher Dock Ellis have to contend with on June 12th, 1970? Depending on your interpretation of the question it was several or none. In an amazing story that is rarely in any baseball highlight reel, Ellis pitched the only LSD induced no-hitter in the history of major league baseball. Let's see Barry Bonds or Alex Rodriguez enhance their game on psychedelics (no really, let's see it!). Dock Ellis was baseball's first true king of performance enhancing drugs. Ah, but wait... there's more. [...]

I'm done. No, for real this time, I'm done. Normally, I don't get overly emotional when crafting posts, but I can't stand people who don't appreciate an opportunity when it is given. Adam "Pacman" Jones happens to be one of those people. After the strip club incident hit the fan, I was all for giving dude a second chance. Even when he completely bombed during his brief tenure with my Dallas Cowboys, I still thought Jones could garner another chance to get back in the NFL. But after this f*ck up, his [...]

On the inner groove of Beale Street Saturday Night , amongst the various engravings that exist on old LPs, are four words in quotations: "WORLD BOOGIE IS COMING." This was a saying of Jim Dickinson's, who died on Saturday. His contribution to American music puts him in the company of men like his mentor Sam Phillips, about whom said: "...God created all men equal. I think God gave Sam just a little extra." The same could be said about him. I never met Dickinson, and always just took it for granted that someday I would. I saw [...]

There was also a co-host this week, Adam from Fear of Music (on Tuesdays from 1-2:30 PM). I was also featured as a co-host on his radio program where he also did a show on artwork. You can check out his list on his Fear of Music blog. Below is a description of the choices made as well as some that did not make it onto my show this week due to time restraints. [...]

Forever fresh & always on his grind, Trackstar's back with a new mix celebrating the season of summer. This time around he's got the Bay's (and also hardworking) Fabby Davis Jr. playing the host. On Thursday you can start your weekend with an early show by uke master Melvern Taylor at Toad and then head over to Sally O'Brien's in Union Square to see Lucky 57 and Natalie Flanagan. Or if you're feeling all goth-like go to suburbs to see Peter Murphy at Showcase Live. On Friday the show that looks the most interesting to me is at the Middle East Down with Eli "Paperboy" Reed & the True Loves and Jenny Dee & the Delinquents. On Saturday the rescheduled scavenger hunt from the Banditos Misteriosos is happening, which gives you a chance to [...]
Happy Independence Day Weekend! Time to watch the Will Smith/Jeff Goldblum movie and no, Jeff Goldblum has not passed away despite reports form Twitter. I just keep hoping we'll get some sunlight at some point over the next couple of days(wouldn't that be unusual?). On Thursday if you're going to the Cape for the holiday weekend head over to the Beachcomber in Wellfleet for the Lemonheads. If you're staying local, what about the Loretta Lynn tribute show at Precinct with Eileen Jewell? On Thursday you can see the Church at Showcase Live or [...]
