This is a weird little post for Friday. Weird because I haven't ever written about an Italian band before. And weird because the band in question plays an experimental brand of americana that has more in common with Ennio Morricone (in fact they signe dup his iconic whistler to appear on this record) than it does with Johnny Cash. But don't worry these guys have been anointed by John Convertino and Joey Burns (Calexico) so rest assured you're getting some pretty cool shit. The band (a trio) is called Guano Padano and their [...]

photos by Vincent Cornelli The set was awesome: she played songs from every single one of her albums and each song was accompanied by a group of images or cartoons visuals projected onto a screen behind her. She also joked about the wattage of the amplifier and her microphone-alluding to her getting shocked by it at her New Jersey show the previous night . But we come back to her voice. She truly is one of the best [...]

Born in February 1994 when Xavier Demerliac (guitar and brass) and Jean Stéphane Brosse (piano and accordion) met and transformed into a quintet in 1996, L'Attirail takes Balkan folk & klezmer into new & cinematic territories with their 2007 album Kara Deniz , and continues to do so on their recently released "Wilderness". And it's exactly their progressive tone and soundtrackist mentality that sets them apart from traditional Eastern European folklore/ klezmer bands. There's a distinct Spaghetti Western influence on Wilderness (as the name suggests) with sliding guitars and galloping rhythms; I may not be correct but [...]

The problem with a list like this is the "shoulds". You know, the albums you feel like everyone else will pick, so you "should," too? Well, this time I decided not to deal with those. My list is based on the number of times I listened to these albums since they came out, whether I love them so much I already know every word to every song, how much it moved me, etc. This is a personal list. It isn't intended to be complete or controversial. That said, I know I'll get crap for [...]

Queste domande [...]

Filed under: News Chris Knox , the indie godfather of New Zealand indie music, suffered a debilitating stroke in June at his home in Auckland. His many friends in New Zealand's music scene -- and some from far further afield -- have rallied round by recording a tribute album 'Stroke -- Songs for Chris Knox,' which sees a string of covers of his material and was released in New Zealand on Monday (Nov. 16). Knox, 57, first found notoriety with his punk band the Enemy in [...]

photos by Chris La Putt Neko Case 's tour hit The Wellmont Theatre in Montclair, NJ last night (11/15). The show was on the short side, possibly due to some electric shocks Neko got from the microphone earlier in the show. According to Mike Van Den Broek , it was "18 songs, 65 Minutes. Zero Encore. Disappointed to say the least." Joey Burns and John Convertino of Calexico opened the show, [...]

Bonjour ! Ils donnent ainsi naissance à Hope Sandoval & The Warm Inventions. Si ce [...]

Knocking our heads for a spin with his straight-out-of-the-desert brand of stoner/doom rock, Oscape made a big impression on the Ripple office when their first EP The Growing Ground fell into our laps. Needless to say, we couldn't wait til we had a chance to chat with Oscape's main man, Scott Heller, and dig deep into his fertile mind. When I was a kid, growing up in a house with Cat Stevens, Neil Diamond, and Simon and Garfunkle, the first time I ever heard Kiss's "Detroit Rock City," it was a moment of musical epiphany. It was [...]

Day 1 is complete. Here are the songs the popped up on the iPod on Day 1 of my cross country move (while I was tracking them). This is also why I love using shuffle. Wilco - Monday Stephen Malkmus - Gardenia Marah - Wild West Love Song Rolling Stones - Dead Flowers Gogol Bordello - Immigrant Punk Arctic Monkeys - Cornerstone The Beatles - Don't Ever Change Alela Diane - White As Diamonds [...]

I could be wrong, but if I remember correctly Austin's own Strange Boys closed out their Fun Fun Fun Fest set this past weekend with their newest song, "Be Brave" ( take a listen at their myspace ). You can expect a 7" single on January 26th, with their sophomore full-length of the same name to released the following month via Rough Trade . ( via GvB ) The band will also be performing a few dates with Julian Casablancas . Very cool! Strange Boys on Tour: [...]

Some bands have something going on that the average passerby hipster groups fail to offer. Rather than just providing pleasure for those few moments before the hegemons of the indie cosmos come up with the next new "must hear group," Austin's The Strange Boys make their own sound and it far exceeds the worth of those two page album reviews of mostly forgettable crap that corrupt our time. Moreover,The Strange Boys have signed to Rough Trade Records for the world excluding the US (In The Red). Their new album, Be Brave , is slated for release in [...]

Anyone who remembers the 'good old' days of festivals when you sat back and relaxed whilst taking in some super sweet beats would revel in the goodness of The Golden Plains Festival. For those that don't, either do I. Woodstock was a long time ago and too far away anyway. The Golden Plains Festival is a modern day version that's only been around for three years. So in festival life span it's only a toddler. A toddler that has been named Australia's Favourite Festival two years running by the 'Festival Awards'. Not so bad for an over [...]

Our fair city's music needs your help. As you may know, today's economy is not doing well. This is forcing the city to have to make budget cuts where ever possible, even if that means eliminating some of Chicago's free summer music festivals including Blues Fest, Jazz Fest, the World Music Festival, and Summer Dance. Even Millennium Park concerts such as Music Without Borders and the very cool Downtown Sound series , which only this past summer offered free performances from St. Vincent, Shellac, Dirty Projectors and the Feelies at the [...]
