You wouldn't expect a sunny version of indie/chamber pop to come out of the cold climate of the Rust Belt, but that's just what a favorite band of ours has done. We got hooked on them a couple of years ago with "Postcard." But, their sound has progressed and gotten more sunny in the two years since it's last album. Parade finds the band expanding it's sound to the areas close to that of Camera Obscura or The Clientele. Warm, gentle melodies that bounce around your head a [...]

Sambassadeur - European LP It's taken Sambassadeur two years to deliver European but my word has it been worth it. It is absolutely stunning. Awash with soothing strings, shimmering keys and soaring female vocals, it's orchestral dream pop at its very finest. New single Days sets the tone; strident, catchy and beautiful but Sandy dunes is even better; its Spector-esq production and tender words leaving the lucky listener [...]

Canadian dance-punk band You Say Party! We Say Die!, released their third album, XXXX last year. The extremely limited press album is getting a wider release next week. The album's first single is "Laura Palmer's Prom". The track is not only picking up steam but its getting remixed by Los Campesinos! of all bands. Los Camp makes the song sound like a hyped up Camera Obscura . Enjoy! The Original: You Say Party! We Say Die! "Laura Palmer's Prom" The Remix: You [...]
Since the announcement of Have One on Me , Joanna Newsom's follow-up to 2006's flawless album Ys , Drag City has made available a few streams via their website. The first of which, "'813 resulted in the site being completely overloaded, with the second track titled "Good Intentions Paving Company" was made available earlier today. While I miss the quality string section that was prominent on Ys , the jazz leanings of this newest stream along with the general sparseness and stripped down sound of "'813 puts [...]

This list could go hundreds, thousands deep and it would still only touch the surface, so you know how much a struggle it was for me to cut it down to just 50. Ranking art is always a bit of a silly process, and it's even more here, when every single song is brilliant. So don't take the order too seriously. The real point of this is to give people a chance to hear the things that I simply couldn't live without, the songs that make my whole world go around – and to hopefully [...]
Title Tracks , the new project from John Davis of the now defunct Q And Not U , have released the first video from their debut. The album, It Was Easy , is due out on February 9th via the Ernest Jenning record label. Camera Obscura vocalist Tracyanne Campbell appears on two of the album's 11 tracks, which also include covers of the Byrds' "She Don't Care About Time" and Bruce Springsteen 's "Tougher Than The Rest."

Look, Girls. We really love you and all, but you're touring A LOT. Don't get me wrong, I love it! I'm just concerned for your mental health. People have a tough time after touring so much, ya know? You still have a booked February to finish up, and now you're playing a little over a month more? I'll go see your shows. I'll just be the guy giving you a concerned motherly face. 3.30 Recher Theatre–Towson, MD* 4.1 Paradise Rock Club–Boston, MA* 4.2 Voyeur (Making Time)–Philadelphia, PA* 4.3 Webster [...]

Who : Midlake Title : The Courage of Others Label : Bella Union RIYL : Grizzly Bear, Dr. Dog, Department of Eagles Thoughts : If you loved The Trials of Van Occupanther you will undoubtedly herald Midlake's follow-up efforts as one of the best releases of the year when the time comes for those shennanigans. Efterklang has a new music video for Modern Drift . The video was produced by Kristian Leth , "based on Dyrehaven, den Romantiske Skov , a film from 1970 by the acclaimed artists Per Kirkeby and Jørgen Leth (Kristians father)." This famous danish film, and thus the video, shows the four seasons in Denmark. Modern Drift is the first single for their third studio album, Magic Chairs , which will be released February 22nd via 4AD [...]
Back after the usual December break and there's a real mix in this months playlist. As usual there's a mix of tracks that have arrived in our inbox, in the post, via myspace and from other blogs. This track was featured on Insounds post about the top 50 free tracks of 2009. It has really brought me back round to Camera Obscura and got me excited about the album. I was chatting to Schonberg about this track and he doesn't think it's the strongest on the album, I think that's saying something. [...]

We don't promise to have everything that's out there but what is comes in one easy-to-digest package ! This is a new feature that will pop up on the weekends. It's a combination of (a) follow-ups on prior posts, (b) links to cool stuff I've recently found on other music blogs, (c) quick write-ups on submissions that have been sent my way lately, and (d) whatever-the-hell else I feel like rambling about. - This week's edition is being typed while listening to Drew Danburry's Goodnight Gary , which he was kind enough to send my way in advance of its February 9 release. You might [...]
"I have a song that will put you in a good mood - It's a happy song." Indeed it sure is. Check out the first single and video from Camera Obscura 's latest album, " My Maudlin Career ", out last April. It's new to me, okay. Yes, I now understand this band formed in 1966. And they're Scottish. And this is their - not second, not third, but - fourth album. No real excuse for catching on so late. Seriously, where have I been? Who [...]

New York City's the Secret History are preparing to release The World That Never Was on March 22. The album's first single is "Johnny Anorak". The track sounds like a combination between Camera Obscura and Gang of Four . Check it out. MP3: The Secret History "Johnny Anorak"
You heard me. Frightened Rabbit is going on an extensive American tour in support of their forthcoming third full-length, The Winter of Mixed Drinks , due out March 9. This doesn't happen particularly often, so don't miss it. Seriously, don't. If I hear any more about this negligence of yours, I'm really going to get angry. It's just selfish, you know? You you you. Always about you. See a band live, for a change. Live a little. Gosh. Frightened Rabbit - "Head Rolls Off" [MP3] March 17 - Austin, Texas [...]
The Great Inbox Clearance is my way of getting through the overwhelming number of emails we received after taking a week off. Check out this post for the details behind the project. That post will also explain why lemurs are involved. Former Verve-er Richard Ashcroft has found a new way to pass the time until the next, inevitable Verve reunion. He's got a new band called United Nations Of Sounds. He and U.N.S. will be releasing an album, Redemption , on 29 March. The unembeddable video [/shakes fist at Richard Ashcroft, who [...]

by Andrew Frisicano DOWNLOAD: Title Tracks - Every Little Bit Hurts (MP3) DOWNLOAD: Pretty & Nice - Tora Tora Tora (MP3) John Davis of Title Tracks (by Shervin Lainez) In early 2008, after several years spent in Washington D.C. bands like Q And Not U and Georgie James, John Davis decided he was ready to go out and start writing and recording albums on his own. John began work on the songs that were [...]

Yep, we're heading North via the quaint village of Camera Obscura towards the hamlet of Labrador . Melodies never sleep there, they endlessly reinvent themselves and circulate through its mazy corridors like a warm spring air. We've visited plenty of times and stayed at the Hotel Sambassadeur at least once before. Such a lovely place, grandeur and a welcome sense of the familiar means it's an easy choice. The establishment will upgrade next month when the finished renovation job will make this a top class 4-star 'European' destination. We enjoy our 'Days' there and hope word of [...]
