From BarlettaHey Fam! Here is a sick mix from some hype Canadian cats from MTL who made a mix of all Canadian Producers!!!!So the focus of this mix was just to get all the upcoming Canadian producers on one big mix. Me and my brother Liam scoured our great frozen land far and wide, under rock and tree, from the deepest depths of Lake Huron to the majestic peaks of the rocky mountains for the

Hello everybody!!! It is good to be back!! Sorry about the mass hiatus but I was in South America for a couple of months and it has taken me a month to get my head back. For Immediate Release KISS MY WIFE FOR HAITI – CALGARY SONGWRITER CONCERT & FUNDRAISER Award-winning Calgary songwriter, Anthony Burbidge, will stage a "Songs Of Love" concert at the Calgary Unity Church Saturday, February 13th at 7 PM. As part of the show, Burbidge and his wife, Lilian, will raise funds for Haiti's earthquake victims with an old fashioned kissing booth. The "Kiss My Wife For Haiti" fundraiser was born from Burbidge's personal connection with last month's tragedy. That connection came on January 18th when, less than a week after the earthquake, Burbidge flew to [...]
Photo courtsey of Winter Dance Party blog It was fifty-one years ago this past Feb. 3rd that, according to Don McLean , "the music died". Buddy Holly , Richie Valens , and The Big Bopper , J.P. Richardson, all died on a snowy February day back in 1959 and took with them the talent and potential of a new generation. But what they left behind was a legacy that has influenced just about every musician to come after in one way or another, even if they aren't aware of it – [...]

Marvulous A touch of Canadian talent this afternoon with Toronto's Marvul . 'Buckle Shuffle' is a Brodinski inspired bubbler with dark overtones and compressed basslines. This is a welcome change from some of the recent efforts by Canadians that gear themselves more towards club outings. (Felix Cartal?) (Image - Gabz ) . 'Pulsar' is a broken IDM track that fixes it self by being genuinely fresh and without the constraints of being called dubstep or hardcore techno. Stop labeling and dance. DL [...]

Give the Drummer Some's 6 Favorite Downloads from the MP3 Blogosphere You just gotta love the ironic touch of naming a nightspot in the the middle of landlocked Iowa the Surf Ballroom. No wild guffaws, though, as we doff fedoras in quiet contemplation of the tragedy , 51 years ago today, that put the Surf on the map. (1) Thirty years after making the experimental film New York Eye and Ear Control , filmmaker/painter/sculptor/wri ter/musician Michael Snow recorded this compelling piano/drum duet with fellow Canadian Jack Vorvis. ••• [...]
Whaaaa?!? It's barely February and you guys are already talking SXSW ? You bet your ass we are! Now still a little over a month or so away, we wanted to kick off our SXSW watchlist bands this year with Victoria, BC band Jets Overhead . Hailing from the great white north, you can hear the obvious Stars / Metric / Broken Social Scene influences that run deep in the sounds of this band. Of course the ATH loves those sounds! Not to write them off as just another Canadian atmospheric rock band, [...]
You know I get enough new music through my mailbox and inbox, so for me to go chasing a band via Facebook they have to really grab me. Such is the case with The Mighty Low . I stumbled upon them via Alan McGee's Death Disco lineup for this week. You can take your pick from Wilco through Neil Young or even those famous Canadians The Band for comparisons. I think the short biography I ssked the band to put together for me sums them up pretty well: From the flat lake lands of southern [...]

A New Broken Social Scene album is coming! A New Broken Social Scene album is coming! I love typing that because I hear giant church bells ringing and see a kid excitedly running from door to door screaming it when I do. Anyway, Pitchfork pulled down a lot of news on this which I'm just going to re-post, so read it below and follow the link to the site if you want to read their interview with Kevin Drew. It's been five years since the nebulous indie rock guitar maelstrom known [...]
Before we get to the shows, a reminder that Loud Loop Radio will be back on the air tomorrow, Saturday, January 30, at 3 p.m. until 5 p.m. on Radio DePaul . Lets get to it, shall we? EARTH PROGRAM One of our 10 Chicago Bands To Watch In 2010 , Earth Program will celebrate their record release show for INVADE! in style with a killer show at Ronny's tonight. If you've never [...]
NBC link (until 2/15/10) HERE . (Canadians and others are gonna have to watch this via other means as I don't think the A channel which carries the shows up here has online rights)
Filed under: News , Canada Canadians reinforced their reputation as a compassionate people on Friday night as the country's Canada for Haiti telethon -- which aired across all the national stations just prior to the US-based Hope for Haiti Now -- raised money and awareness for the earthquake-shattered island nation. Lacking some of the glitz and polish of its American counterpart, the extraordinary event still boasted several big Canadian celebrities. Michael J. Fox, William Shatner, Will Arnett and movie directors Jason Reitman and James Cameron made their pleas [...]

Martha Wainwright, Kate McGarrigle and Rufus Wainwright (Mark Seliger) Kate McGarrigle died yesterday and I am heartbroken. She was one of the co-founders of the sublime McGarrigles, a two, and sometime three-sister folk traditional ensemble that composed some of the most gorgeous songs to have come out of North American folk revivial movement over the past forty years. Rather than recount their achievement here, I'll let an essay I wrote for the Encyclopedia of Folk and Blues speak for itself. Suffice to say, the McGarrigles were one of the most influential groups [...]

The Canadians catch a lot of guff for being... well...peaceful people. Apart from hockey fights and their occasional slaughter of a caribou or two, they're pretty easy going and a nice neighbor to the North. Hell, Americans are definitely Dennis the Menace to their Mr. Wilson. But then I came across this article that talked about a Fight Club that had been set up at The University of Manitoba. After an internal investigation, administrators determined that students had been having scheduled fights on the squash courts. Wait...what? Meet me on the squash court? Was the zamboni [...]
OK, so perhaps partying at a 10-day electronic music festival in Playa del Carmen, Mexico in January may sound like a piece of cake, but take it from me, there is only so much a body (and liver) can take ... (Yeah, yeah, I know it's not like spending a few weeks in a coal mine or an igloo, but still ...) This year's BPM Festival (January 1-10, 2010), in its third year running, boasted a somewhat grueling schedule of around-the-clock events: beach parties by day, various club locales by night, and an afterhours venue open daily [...]

Finally having some time to catch our breath! Looks like there are some really good shows coming to town over the next few months - here is a little mix to highlight what is to come: (mp3) Ladytron - He Took Her to a Movie Check out Ladytron's DJ Set (featuring Mira Aroyo) on February 14th @ B-Side Liquor Lounge - we've gone to a couple Ladytron DJ Sets at B-Side and it is definitely a good time. (mp3) Cold Cave - The [...]

Filed under: News , Movies , Canada Turns out Canadians will get a chance to offer up their own opinion of 'No Distance Left to Run,' the documentary-slash-concert flick from seminal '90s Brit rockers Blur . After the film's wildly-successful showing at London's Leicester Square on Thursday night -- which Spinner reported about here -- it's been announced that the celluloid escapades of Damon Albarn and crew will have its day in the sun in international theatres. [...]

I'm too tired and you're too anxious. Let's get this show on the road. I'll drop some kind of '09 wrap up speech in "The Best Albums of '09 / The Top 153 which should be out soooon. In the meantime, nibble on these biscuits. And leave your comments! You guys have piped up louder than ever lately and I love hearing what Team TBE thinks. Cause if two brains are better than one, well than imagi.... ok, we get it, let's do this! Oh, and since ranking albums is for wieners ( songs are OK) I [...]

I while back I had the pleasure of attending a high-profile UFC event (man cannot live on music alone) in Minneapolis. One of the biggest draws of the night, along with a seemingly endless parade of fugly, overpriced T-shirts (or "douche capes" in Joel McHale parlance) was a bout featuring welterweight champion, Georges St-Pierre . When GSP was introduced, boos reigned down on the Canadian in a fashion typically reserved in these parts for Republican presidential candidates and skim milk. Not only that, but the Canadian GSP fans in attendance (a surprisingly large number) [...]
