I keep missing Kasey Chambers when she comes through town, but it's not for lack of trying. The Australian singer-songwriter with the airy twang in her voice does heartache so well, it's a dream of mine to sit on the grass at some summery festival, eyes closed, letting the bittersweet music burn through me like the sunshine. Kasey's talent springs from growing up with music in her veins: the daughter of steel guitar player Bill Chambers , she picked up her first strings early, and spent an adolescent decade on the road [...]

Deep Sea Arcade - 'Lonely In Your Arms' ( mp3 ) Deep Sea Arcade made a bit of a splash with their last single 'Don't Be Sorry,' a retro-pop outing that sounded a lot like The Zombies mixed with recent Blue Mountain troupe Belles Will Ring. 'Lonely In Your Arms' is a return to the '60s aesthetic they love, but is less dreamy and washed out - the guitars are here set to treble-y surf-rock than their earlier shimmering chime. The bare, melodic, and almost naive chorus is most reminiscent of early Beatles [...]
Things are getting hot for Robin Thicke . First, there's this killer track called "Meiplé (Me I Play)" based on a Brigitte Bardot sample (yes, you read it perfectly, the 60's French music and movie icon), featuring Jay-Z . Then, there's the absolutely stunning video of "Somebody To Love" , one of the greatest collaboration of the year, where the Blue Eyed Soul songster teams up with another icon, of modern days this time around, the amazing Leighton Meester . Catch the full length audio of "Meiplé" plus the [...]

O n with the countdown... 20. Ciara Ft. Ludacris "Oh" (2005) The first artist since, well, perhaps ever to score a perfect 3 for 3 with singles 1, 2 and 3, Ciara saved the best for last. They call her style of music "crunk," and I'm not sure what that means exactly, but trying to tag a label on such a fresh, unique track seems pretty pointless. Caressing a groove that's slow, sultry and just a little bit spooky, Ciara makes less (her vocals barely rise above a breathy whisper) more more more. Ludacris's rap bridge may not [...]

Another year of (mostly) daily tunes here at Doklands, and I have to say I'm still having fun with this. I considered winding this up after hitting 1,000 tracks because really, how much is there left to say? Glad I didn't, though. What is it? Baroque Pop (aka Baroque Psych – let's call it BP) is Garage Psych's rather elegant and refined cousin. Where the latter is all overdriven guitars, shoutyness and acid drenched solos, BP - with its frilly sleeves and paisley cravat, augments the basic rock band with the strains of chamber string quartet, a sprinkling of harpsichord and the swoon of an oboe. These songs are usually a 'good trip' with shades of folksy pastoralism and dreamy, thoughtful lyrics. True BP, to my mind, whilst it may have a sunny summer [...]
CMJ released the band schedule for its 2009 Music Marathon & Film Festival yesterday, which is about as good a sign of fall hitting New York as the return of apple cider at Greenmarket. The festival runs from Oct. 20 - Oct. 24 and includes various venues throughout the city, and the list of featured artists would probably take all four days to read through. But skimming the selection reveals a fairly equal distribution of well-known acts like Atlas Sound and Deer Tick , anonymous locals (including krautrock-y Jeff Buckley-channelers Pocketknife), twenty-two bands who [...]
The press release below doesn't actually list all the acts performing at CMJ this year, so you're probably better off checking out cmj.sched.org to get a true idea of what's happening during this year's marathon. Of course, sched.org is a little confusing too and it doesn't list unofficial events and day parties (as far as I know), so you'll have to wait a little bit longer for info to trickle out from the blogs and other unofficial sources. Lastly, even though the press release says the schedule is "final", you can pretty much bet that things will shift [...]
Great news in the world of singer-songwriter folk in the past few weeks, as four of our favorite folk artists have emerged from the studio with smashing new albums. As each has been featured previously here on Cover Lay Down, we're styling the features as part of our ongoing (Re)covered feature, which looks back at older posts in order to help keep familiar names and perennial faves on the radar where they deserve. Enjoy the sneak peeks, and don't forget to follow links to purchase what you love... [...]

MUSIC NEWS - One of the top makers of intelligent electronic dance music, Leicaster, UK's, Rival Consoles (23-year old Ryan Lee West) has just released IO on Erased Tapes. Rival Consoles first appeared two years ago with an EP released on the London-based label. After having supported his city neighbors and label buddies on an extensive European tour in November 2008, West determinedly worked all winter to finish his first full-length album ' IO ', out in North America now. With unusual influences from impressionists such as Claude Debussy and modern electronic artists [...]

Blue Record announces the re-awakening of Savannah's rock giants Baroness , and thank heavens for that. What the world needs is more bands like this: bands unafraid to hide their heavy classic rock influence; a metal band with all of the melodic accents and intelligent guitar work one might expect from some kind of post-punk indie rock revivalist group. Baroness rules. And we've a new track for you from their soon-to-be-released album. The sister recording to 2007's Red Album , Blue Record is an instantly-classic album, with all the peaks and valleys, textures, [...]

The live music highlight of last week was seeing Ross Flournoy at the Little Room at Largo. That's a great little spot to see music. With the future of the Broken West in doubt, it was great to see him perform a couple of new songs along with some Broken West classics. Monday 9/28/09 [Pick of the Night] Leslie and the Badgers / Sian Alice Group / Best Coast / Paperplanes @ The Echo (Free) – Night three of their Monday night residency. [Recommended] [...]

This weekend has been one of juxtaposing forms of entertainment for me. Half was spent reclining back and catching up on some reading time, while the other was spent turning my brain to jelly on amusement park rides. I'll apologize in advance for any goofy album reviews I happen to post this week. I can't handle a day at Cedar Point like I used to. In any event, it's difficult to write a weekly feature that doesn't carry with it content-specific goals. Usually I simply ramble. Today I'll begin with a brief synopsis of my reading tendencies, and then launch [...]

( Editor's note: I don't know how to swim. I think we've talked about this before. I'm afraid of jellyfish, barracuda and drowning. The new band we're throwing at you today, The Light Rays, work in a kind of sludgy surf-rock mode, hence the picture above. I just want you to know that it (the picture or the ocean or surfing; you decide) freaks me out. Also, I love how the dude in the front is cool and collected and the dude in the back looks like he's shitting his pants. Good times! ) I like things that [...]

My favorite part of listening to a new Yo La Tengo album for the first time is anticipating what their obligatory 10-minute song is going to be like. With Painful being the only exception, all of their other full-lengths since James McNew came aboard have had at least one (note: I'm aware that some songs, like "Blue Line Swingers" fall a little short of the 10-minute mark - that's close enough for me, bucko). May I Sing With Me and I Am Not Afraid Of You And I Will Beat Your Ass [...]

This could easily have been just a tribute to Maryland's 'Charm City', Baltimore, but I've managed to find a few tracks that mention other places in the so-called 'Old Line' state. I hope you enjoy them; let me know what you think and please suggest more in the comments below. MP3: The Jayhawks - Baltimore Sun Followers of my State Songs series will know that The Jayhawks can always be relied on for place name songs. This is probably my top tune from their album [...]
