It really varies heavily for every member of the band, seriously, almost opposite! but I can answer for me: From Momument To Masses - friends from the bay area, extrememly dope Carcrashlander - label mate from portland, love the variety on his albums Three Mile Pilot - used to be one of my favorites, and are now recording a new album Alias - an anitcon artist that i recently discovered, ambient electronic music, makes a nice soundtrack for anything Fugazi - the ultimate and greatest indie band ever, constantly evolving, [...]
There's a lot of music festivals to choose from this summer. PDX Pop Now! just wrapped up last week, Pickathon is this weekend, and both MFNW and Bumbershoot loom in the near future. Still, if you don't want to shell out the cash to hang out with a bunch of folk-pickers at Pendarvis Farm, local grassroots promotion collective Potlatch Presents has another option: First Fest. The aptly-named festival takes place this weekend at Berbati's Pan, with three consecutive nights of music curated by the Potlatch gang. It's a nice collection of music, ranging from [...]

Carcrashlander Mountains on Our Backs Jealous Butcher Myspace: www.myspace.com/carcrashlander I keep wanting to say "dreamy landscapes" in relation to Carcrashlander's new Mountains On Our Backs. It's hard to get a reviewer to use those words in real life, plus it usually evokes some really melodic electronic weird sound atmospheric. "Dreamy landscapes" works for Carcrashlander if the dream is about a slow sink into quicksand. All of this means that Cory Gray (formerly of Desert City Soundtrack) moves independently of most modern post-rock constructs--their [...]
Oh, Shelley Short. I've had a bit of a crush on Short and her wonderful country-folk songs ever since I saw her at the tiny Towne Lounge (RIP) last summer, and that crush just got bigger after watching her video for "Time Machine/Submarine" from the forthcoming full-length A Cave, A Canoo . Shelly, how come I had no idea you had a new record coming out? "Time Machine/Submarine" is a lovely song, filled with her almost childlike croon and warm washes of electric guitar from (I'm assuming) collaborator Alexis Gideon. And the video is even better, a [...]
Label: Parks & Records/Jealous Butcher/PIAPTK Release date: 21/04/09 Website: CarCrashLander's MySpace Buy: Amazon Google informs me that CarCrashLander is the solo project of a man named Cory Gray, who has previously played piano and saxophone in The Dodos and Desert City Soundtrack, amongst others. I am not as familiar with this music scene as I am with home-grown British rock, but my ventures into its realm have been positive in the past. I was looking forward to [...]

photo by "Nat" I drove down Killingsworth on Sunday afternoon, during the height of Winter Blast Y2K8". It was treacherous. Truly. Cars were running off the road left and right. One car pulled out in front of me quickly and I nearly couldn't stop in time. Avalanches tumbled down the sides of the road. Polar bears pawed at the side of my car. Snow goblins tried to steal my Christmas spirit. East Coasters and Midwesterners have been scoffing at Portlanders' overreactions to the tiny dribble of snow we've received here. Driving skills have been [...]

This year saw a rather incredible number of our local musicians receive boatloads of praise in the national press and on blogs around the world. And rightly so, as incredible album after incredible album kept arriving in my mailbox from Portland bands and record labels these past 52 weeks. It has put me in the enviable position of having to make a selection of the cream of this crop. The list has been changing almost daily over the last month as a certain song or show will remind me just how great a particular album is [...]
Wow & Flutter Golden Touch (Jealous Butcher) [POST-POST-PUNK] Even through the fuzz that clings to every song on Wow & Flutter's Golden Touch, it's easy to hear the irony dripping off the album's centerpiece, "A Little Help." Over glockenspiel, banjo and handclaps, a member of the trio (all three contribute vocals, but it's near impossible to tell them apart) wonders aloud, "Peace on earth/Where on earth have you been?" and is soon joined by a chorus chanting, "So let's all make love to each other." It's a satire of the [...]

It's that time of year again, when bands both big and small converge upon New York City for a debaucherous , music-filled five days...that's right we're talking about the 2008 CMJ Music Marathon. Spanning Oct. 21 to Oct. 25, there's just too much to see. We'll do our best...this isn't our full time job. Come on! (in Gob voice.) Stark has enjoyed watching certain acts from all over the nation strive for immediate, Black Kids-like fame. Alas, they're not all that lucky. From Nashville to Chicago to NYC, Stark has highlighted [...]

My first exposure to Anacortes, WA singer-songwriter Karl Blau came (and I imagine many fans of a certain age can share similar stories) after hearing the Microphones 2000 album It Was Hot, We Stayed in the Water —which features, appropriately, an ode entitled "Karl Blau," a soft gem of a pop song that whizzes by in under two minutes. And while I haven't followed his own solo as much as I'd like, there's no doubt that he's one of the NW's finest hidden treasures, releasing a steady stream of lo-fi and dub influenced records on a slew of awesome [...]

One of few disappointments I experienced upon moving to Portland a couple of years ago was discovering that the little gem of an indie band Desert City Soundtrack— whom I'd been extremely excited to learn happened to call Stumptown home—was apparently disbanded. One solitary show had been announced in late 2006 only to disappear from subsequent listings, then nothing more was heard; no official breakup, nor mention of an inevitably-synonymous "indefinite hiatus"—just a quiet sloping away by the members into other projects. All-in-all, a real shame since this was a group that, despite its relative lack of recognition, was doing [...]
