A Camp (w/ guest James Iha) @ Le Poisson Rouge, NYC -pics

A Camp (w/ guest James Iha) @ Le Poisson Rouge, NYC -pics photos by Matthew Taplinger It's A Trap : What does the name "A Camp" actually refer to? Niclas Frisk: We just decided that we would go up to the woods and do some songs, do some drawings, bake some bread and record some music. At some point Nina said that we were having a camp in the woods. And at the same time we were shopping in a supermarket and saw this maple syrup with [...]

A Camp Get Help From All-Star Musicians in New York

A Camp Get Help From All-Star Musicians in New York Filed under: Concerts and Tours , News When A Camp 's Nina Persson sang, "Now we're gonna party like it's 1699" at her band's show on Tuesday night, she was only half kidding. With plume-adorned microphone stands, an elegant grand piano, sunset-colored lamps and dark blue mood lighting, New York's Le Poisson Rouge was decorated more like an old-fashioned cabaret than a Manhattan music club. Persson, best known as the singer for Swedish band the Cardigans , fit right in with a lacy black-and-gray dress, feathered headband, and [...]

Afternoon Naps – Parade – Album Review

Afternoon Naps – Parade – Album Review The first three tracks of Parade provide the perfect introduction to Afternoon Naps , a rust belt pop band that has been bringing sunshine pop to their gloomy post-industrial climes since 2006. "Plum City Fight Song," the band's homage to their hometown, begins the album with a healthy dose of guitarist Tom Dechristofaro's Moz-lite vocals, while the third tune, "The Day We Started," provides a crash course in the moonstruck glee of keyboardist Leia Hohenfeld. Sandwiched between these songs, "Beach Bums" finds the duo sharing the vocal burden more equally, a combination as blissful as it is [...]

REVIEW: Hari and Aino - A considerate kind of home b/w Maple 7" (Cloudberry Records)

The band's self-titled full-length was just okay, but give me two all-star tracks with zero filler and you'll hear no complaints whatsoever. Once again, Hari and Aino play the kind of professional upbeat indiepop you should be familiar with from The Cardigans ' early records, but never too sweet or cloying, nor too cute for its own good. What's left is what's most important; the strong, yet understated female vocals, the super-crisp rhythm section and the kind of guitar playing that perfectly suits each part, always with just the right amount of notes and not [...]

Decade's end: The Year 2003

Decade's end: The Year 2003 I was about to say that I don't even remember anything about 2003, but I think I blocked it out. My one image of that year is breaking the phone in absolute frustration and anxiety. So dramatique. But about the music, 2003 was a great year: I was passionately obsessed with every song below, all of them. More than any other year in the 00s. The top three are, by the way, truly the top three songs. XO's Favorite Songs of 2003 Turin Brakes [...]

Justin Bieber Is A Beatboxing Machine

Justin Bieber Is A Beatboxing Machine If you thought Usher protege Justin Bieber was gonna be content with racking up his umpteen iTunes hits—like the Cardigans/"Lovefool"-interpola ting "Love Me" —and then just walk away with his bookbag full of royalty cash, think again! The 15-year-old Canadian heartthrob (is that legal?) has been singled out as MTV's Featured Artist , and the network's website contains various exclusive clips of him showcasing all sorts of talents—like beatboxing, which he says he learned to do from watching a video on YouTube! Witness below: Wow. This kid's pretty much [...]

EP Review : The Yearbooks - Have A Great Summer

EP Review : The Yearbooks - Have A Great Summer This rock and stroll mini album by Chicago based The Yearbooks is reminiscent of the schmindie Brit pop brigade that infected the UK charts over a decade ago. Think The Boo Radleys or Teenage Fanclub . With passive vocals, plodding melodies and flaccid Stroke's guitar lines ' Have a Great Summer ' is a wishy-washy affair comprising of six melancholic pop numbers. Too inconspicuous to anything other than acceptable this bland offering sits awkwardly in the no man's land between New York rock [...]

ABSENCE MAKES MY HEART GROW FONDER

ABSENCE MAKES MY HEART GROW FONDER T he waiting is the hardest part. And as the first decade of the millennium comes to its conclusion, I'm still anticipating -- more eagerly and impatiently in some cases than others -- new music from several artists who have spent the majority of aughts MIA. Some of them (Sade, Shania) supposedly have new music in the works. Others may make us wait until the roaring '20s. Here's hoping the following 11 make their grand re-entrances sooner rather than later. Come back, and all will be forgiven! The Cardigans Most Recent Studio [...]

THE TOP 100 SWINGING SINGLES OF THE AUGHTS: #20-11

THE TOP 100 SWINGING SINGLES OF THE AUGHTS: #20-11 O n with the countdown... 20. Ciara Ft. Ludacris "Oh" (2005) The first artist since, well, perhaps ever to score a perfect 3 for 3 with singles 1, 2 and 3, Ciara saved the best for last. They call her style of music "crunk," and I'm not sure what that means exactly, but trying to tag a label on such a fresh, unique track seems pretty pointless. Caressing a groove that's slow, sultry and just a little bit spooky, Ciara makes less (her vocals barely rise above a breathy whisper) more more more. Ludacris's rap bridge may not [...]

Camera Obscura @ Komedia Brighton review

Camera Obscura @ Komedia Brighton review Camera Obscura Riddled with drugs deaths, alcohol abuse and sexually transmitted infections, it's no wonder bands flock to Brighton. But not so Camera Obscura . They are here to see if they can rediscover the virtuous circle of love between band, music and audience that defined their last visit in 2007. Still basking in that afterglow Tracyanne was ebullient as she flounced on stage. Yes, Tracyanne. Flounced. Big smiles, words [...]

Can You Gig It?: Exlovers / Kurran & The Wolfnotes / Little Death @ Levi's OnesToWatch, London Borderline, 22.10.09

Can You Gig It?: Exlovers / Kurran & The Wolfnotes / Little Death @ Levi's OnesToWatch, London Borderline, 22.10.09 My Chemical Toilet's roving review machine John-Scott Croly went to check out some up-and-comers on the latest Levi's Ones To Watch Tour, so he did. The band selector for the Levi's OnesToWatch tour (for argument's sake let's call her Jean) is seemingly able to predict with unerring accuracy the bands that will be soundtracking our iPod commercials and adorning our NME-reading teenage relatives' bedrooms walls twelve months down the line. Given the name and premise of the tour, this surely makes her very good at her job. Of course I'm fully aware [...]

The Asteroids Galaxy Tour: Fruit

The Asteroids Galaxy Tour: Fruit The Asteroids Galaxy Tour Fruit Small Giants Records [2009] Fire Drill Review: Scandinavian group The Asteroids Galaxy Tour make their full length debut with Fruit , which extends their style of soul, dance and pop found on their EP late last year. They are a group at first listen that grabs your attention because charismatic lead vocalist Mette Lindberg has a swagger to her vocals that is very inviting like Nina Persson (The [...]

Things We Don't Often Talk About.

ABBA TAKE A CHANCE ON ME /// ABBA IN SWITZERLAND
Upon listening to the new Kings of Convenience record, Declaration of Dependence , I suddenly understand how I'm supposed to live. First, I must frequent a scenic place where I can wallow in my sorrows, in anticipation of listening to one half of the record as background music. Wallow: Kings of Convenience - "Renegade" Then, I must plan dinner parties in anticipation of listening to the other half of the record as background music. Dinner Party: Kings of Convenience - "Boat Behind" Next, I [...]

Justin Bieber Puts On A Cardigan, Stretches It Out

Love me Justin bieber
If you thought that what this day needed was a smooshing-together of the verses from Akon's "Beautiful," the robot-stomp beat that characterizes inescapable pop jams like "So What" and "I Kissed A Girl," and the chorus to the Cardigans' "Lovefool" that's been reworked so it involves a 15-year-old singing the line "oh-how-you-doooo-me"... well, Canadian heartthrob Justin Bieber's new single, "Love Me," is the song for you. And if it's not, well, be warned that it's apparently the song for a lot of young ladies, as it was just released to iTunes and it's already No. 15 on that store's chart. [...]
