(photo: Marilis Cardinal) "Heavy, dark, but totally fun" is the way Montreal trio Nightwood describe themselves, and that's pretty apropos after listening to a few of the tracks on offer over at their Myspace page. The band originally caught my attention when they sent me an email letting me know about their most recent video "Bright Girls of Summer" off their October 2009 release, Carta Marina . The video is a time-lapsed document of the entire recording process for the record. When accompanied by the song's march-like beat, the [...]

Someone Still Loves You Boris Yelstin are the sort of band that somehow manage to make guilt-free pop music for the indie kids with ease; but not content with the 'Third best band on Weller Street' title, these guys have managed to slip a stadium rock anthem under my radar. It was created for their own hometown minor-league team, the Springfield Cardinals. What an anthem! MP3: Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin - Cardinal Rules [...]
Montreal band Nightwood have just released a new video to go along with their recently released album, Carta Marina . "The Bright Girls Of Summer" is a time-lapsed recording of the Carta Marina recording process. This is what the band has to say about the video… " The Bright Girls of Summer is the last song on Carta Marina. We hadn't planned on making a video for it so soon, but it works beautifully with the time lapse imagery. We really like this video because it's a neat little time capsule [...]

We have sun framed by a deep blue sky. It makes the day feel warmer. I may even wear a Hawaiian shirt under all my other layers. The snow continued through the day yesterday, but we only got a few inches, not enough for plows. The side roads are still covered and slippery. Mr. and Mrs. cardinal joined the other birds at the big feeder. The red was striking. Last night I noticed a single tree bright with color in the middle of a field. I imagined someone hauling the tree through the tall brown grass, stringing lights [...]

Hmm, one of the key points of the blogosphere is not that any one particular blog may or may not be good, or that individually one site might wield a lot of influence, it is that collectively blogs wield a lot of influence. This is at its most effective when bloggers cooperate and interact, and I've been doing a fair bit of that recently, but committing the cardinal sin of collaborative blogging: failing to cross-link. Apart from being really rather bad manners, it renders the whole scheme a little pointless if I go to all the effort of [...]
![The Roster [2010 Edition].](http://cache.elbo.ws/posts/2230772_lg.jpg)
Update: More re-ups. I wrote this over a year ago. I like to think that it's pretty honest. Let me know how you feel. It's probably my favorite thing I ever wrote. Edited lightly to reflect recent changes in both society and my mindstate. Enjoy. Let's keep it real. i don't care who you are - jock, nerd, heart throb, class clown, recluse, homebody, mama's boy, cool kid, shy guy - everybody who is anybody has a roster, girls and guys alike . You know what i mean. a roster, a team, [...]

HAPPY NEW DECADE! I'm a huge fan of Missy Elliott's "Lose Control" and I thought it would be a perfect track to bring in the new decade. I "linked up" with Garrett of Le Principle and he put together a simple, yet amazing intro to the already stellar Top 40 jam. If you were in Madison at Cardinal Bar for NYE then you know how well this went over at the drop of the ball. Lastly, to those of you who are unfamiliar with " BEEYERRRRNNNNNNN ", it's an airhorn. If you follow Sparkletone [...]

If you're like me you'll be celebrating the New Year by going on a bender--and for that, I salute you. However, even if you aren't spending the weekend in a malted hops frenzy I respect you because you probably have things to do. But your responsibilities or lack thereof should not dissuade you from getting out of the house and seeing some local live music. As always, if we don't mention a show please let us know in the comments section. Friday: Kick off 2010 right over at the High Noon Saloon [...]

The latest battleground against childhood fatties is being fought over chocolate milk. One 8-oz. serving of reduced-fat chocolate milk has nearly as many calories and sugar as a 12-oz. can of Coke. Encouraging students to regularly consume the drink, they say, is contributing to an already worrying childhood obesity crisis. While milk has been the keystone of America's school lunches since the federally subsidized program was established in 1946, the role of chocolate (and other flavored) milk has become a focus of late following a 2006 rule that required schools to establish comprehensive "wellness programs." Public school districts [...]

Here's a quick post, my final one for Christmas 2009. Dan Bryk ( official MySpace wiki AMG ) is an Ontario-born musician, who moved from Canada to Raleigh, NC in 2003 with his partner Erin McGinn (they married in 2008, two years after this song was released). The reason I mention those specifics of his biography should become apparent when you listen to this song. The Besotted family has a tradition called (I swear) "scooterpooping," which is where you leave the house with a modest amount of money and a [...]
The truth is coming out...I'm list-averse. Shopping or to-do, I just don't do 'em. And the finale of another year won't kick me in gear. But I do have some year-end cappers in the form of my one pick for record of the year and one for the release that I actually listened to the most. Intellectually, both could be miles apart. But are they? The actual release most listened to in '09 truly breaks two 'cardinal rules' in a manner. Firstly, the thing came out in August '08. Secondly, I own [...]

My wife and I were listening to Strung Out's Suburban Teenage Wasteland Blues the other day and commenting just how great that record is, and while Heartsounds might not sound exactly like Strung Out, it's easy to listen to their debut album, Until We Surrender , and hear the similarities. The record is full of fast-paced and melodic West Coast pop-punk with male/female vocals. It's a sound that harkens back to mid-90's Fat Wreck Chords revolution and (in addition to Strung Out) reminds me a little of Face To Face, 88 Fingers Louie, [...]
Taylor Pugh, a 4-year-old preschooler has been suspended from school for his luxurious locks. The news has been sweeping through the Dallas newspaper, where Taylor's story was profiled under the heading, " Get a Haircut, You Danged 4-Year-Old Hippie! " I wonder who the copy editor is in those parts, Archie Bunker? I think they used a similar quote when they marketed Gran Turino. Get Off My Lawn, You Danged Asian! NYC photos by Chris La Putt , Philly photos by Diana Zadlo Gwar @ Irving Plaza in NYC Sunday At most metal shows, the dress code is "none more black." At GWAR shows, however, if your shirt isn't covered in blue blood and green bile, you weren't really at a GWAR show, were you? The group of intergalactic badasses, led by vocalist and Fox News' Red Eye's interplanetary correspondent Oderus Urungus, always bring a hellishly [...]
Everyone knows that dealing with Jessica Tandy should bump up your social standing on this film hierarchy. I heard she cursed like a sailor and killed a man on the set of Driving Ms. Daisy.
