So here we are at the weekend before the holiday season officially begins and everyone's schedule gets really busy, so get your music fixes in now. On Thursday night you can check out the final night of the Jenny Dee & The Deelinquints residency at the Lizard. It's also the first night of the International Pop Overthrow 4 night stint at Church. So many great choices for Thursday. You could start at Toad for the early part of the night and see uke master Melvern Taylor. Afterwards there are many venues that have great line-ups. Gordon Gano, yup the guy from the Violent Femmes, and his his new band is at the Middle East with Sidewalk Driver and Mascara. Also on Thursday there's the Lovewhip cd release at Church or go to TTs for John Powhida International Airport, Logan 5 and the Runners, Weisstronauts and Mercy James (great local line-up!). On Friday, I'll Be at Precinct to see My Own Worst Enemy, [...]

Inevitably, a love of coverage leads to a constant, ever-vigilant search for thoughtful, well-crafted reinterpretation. I spend hours each week mining full albums for the hidden cover song, and scanning MySpace and email inbox for the promotional, the one-off acoustic in-studio radio track, and the otherwise unreleased singleton, and the endless discovery is eminently worth the pursuit. But there's no question that tribute albums are the cover lover's bread and butter. I gather these things in like truffles, and hold a special place for them in my heart and in my [...]
Here are a few videos of performances at the WDVX Blue Plate Special. This is a live concert series that takes place every day at noon in down town Knoxville. Every day, people gather downtown to socialize, have lunch, and watch some live music. Did I mention that the shows are free to attend? We're in the middle of our Fall Fund Drive at WDVX. We are a listener supported radio station, and we rely heavily on listener donations to stay on the air. By making your tax deductible donation to WDVX [...]

But don't fret, there's an awesome show at the Lizard with Jenny Dee & the Deelinquints, the Rudds and Brett Rosenberg. This continues the beat for today-lively. This song comes from their album Dona' Got a Ramblin' Mind. I did some hunting to give you more information: Carolina Chocolate Drops . MP3 File yousendit

Apparently Halloween Weekend means every band in the area is appearing as another band, could be entertaining or just confusing I guess we'll have to check them out to find the answer. On Thursday you can go to TTs and see the Talking Heads, Robert Palmer x 2, The Replacements and The Who. Or you could go to the Plough for the surf band The Trabants and the Middle East has King Khan & the BBQ Show and Downbeat 5. On Friday the Armory in Somerville has a spooky event with the screening of Phantom of the Opera and music [...]
So what's happening this weekend? I think there are still tix available for Bill Maher at the Wilbur on Thursday (and they now have a liquor license so cheers!). Also on Thursday you have a chance to check out the new project the Port Charles Quintet at the Plough which sounds fun or you could go to the Brattle for the Califone show. But if these don't appeal to you, don't worry, there are many other great choices on Thursday. On Friday, the show at the Cantab looks strong with the Brooklyns, but then there's also Dennis [...]

Another great week of cool music! On Thursday there are some awesome choices: there's the legendary Al Green at the House of Blues (hopefully you took advantage of reduced tickets thru Live Nation), great indie rock at the Middle East Downstairs with The DoDos and The Ruby Suns, The Ego and the Oracle (aka Jim of Jim's Big Ego) at the Burren, the reclusive cult figure Daniel Johnston at the Paradise and more, how to choose? Friday brings Art Brut to the Middle East, Reverse to Church and the Spendid Nobodies to Toad; all are great choices. On Saturday you [...]
I really hope some of you tuned in to the Blue Plate Special yesterday to hear Jill Andrews and The Carolina Chocolate Drops. Jill's new songs and band sounded amazing, and the Chocolate Drops had the crowd worked into quite a frenzy. Here's a video from the last time the Chocolate Drops appeared on the BPS. They'll be back in town Sunday night for a performance at the Bijou Theatre .
ROcktober continues with another great weekend. On Thursday, you could go to Precinct to check Barrence Whitfield on his second week of his October residency or go to the Alchemist in JP to see Lars Vegas (for Free!). Or maybe you want to revisit the 1980's and see Howard Jones at Scullers. On Friday, not certain if there are still tix available but I'm looking forward to seeing Black Joe Lewis at the Landsdowne Pub and then heading over to Harpers Ferry for the Upper Crust (gotta love their powdered wigs, puffy shirts and beauty marks!). If that's not your thing [...]

The Avett Brothers I and Love and You American, 2009 The Avett Brothers: "I and Love and You" Not being enamored by The Avett Brothers and living in North Carolina is the new form of sacrosanct. This band has a special place for those who know just a little bit about music to be dangerous--mostly those who are huge Widespread Panic, Dave Matthews or Bob Dylan fans who throw down the occasional Vampire Weekend reference. "I just love The Avett Brothers!" they [...]

Jill Andrews spent the past several years as one-half of the creative force behind indie-folk darlings the everybodyfields . Along with Sam Quinn (the other half) and a rotating cast of fellow musicians, Jill and the everybodyfields released three outstanding records. The band gained new fans and accolades with each new release as their melancholy lyrics and soaring harmonies were impossible to resist. They were working on material for a fourth studio album when word began to spread around Knoxville that the band was no more . In the last few months since the split, Quinn [...]
Wow, it's already October. I guess time flies when you're having fun or something like that. On Friday I'm torn about the Dinosaur Jr show at the Middle East for a little Pioneer Valley rock or Jay Retard at Harpers or Jetset and Highland Moore at the Plough, too many choices. Saturday has another good night of music with Ra Ra Riot at the Paradise (I love their Rhumb Line cd but have never seen them live yet), a great local line up at TTs with Sidewalk Driver, The Motion Sick, Aloud and John Powhida's International Airport and yet another [...]

It's not very often Shane or myself really wants to give anyone else the chance to talk - especially about music on our own blog - but after the countless hours of work required to get the Mississippi Sheiks tribute record out the door, Steve Dawson has earned a few moments of your time. Plus, with such an amazing collection of artists talking about music that influences them, well, it's better to get the goods right from the horse's mouth. So here is Steve's own two cents on a project that means more to him than [...]
This is one of those weekends that I've been looking forward to for a long time and if you have too then yay! It's here. On Thursday, there's free ice cream at Coldstone Creamery which is a good start to any weekend. Also on Thursday, there are good choices for music for exotica/tiki music there's Waitiki at Ryles, there's Moby at the House of Blues, there's Poi Dog Pondering at the Regatta Bar, there's Elizabeth and the Catapult at TTs and Three Day Threshold at Toad. The Friday show that I'm really looking forward to is a big one at [...]
Midtown Dickens Lanterns Self-released, 2009 I'm a big believer that albums equal seasons, and time places, context influence the perception of an album almost as much as the album itself. That's why we'll get a hundred different top albums of the decade in the next few months. So, Midtown Dickens has made an autumn record. Because when I think of autumn, I think of long mountain drives with different colored leaves and I think of BANJOS of course, so Midtown [...]
