Three nights, five venues, eighteen bands, and too many beers to count. That was my Next Big Nashville 2009 in a nutshell. Not quite as crazy as NBN08, but still one hell of a good time. So now that the ringing in my ears has died down, let the recapping begin. Thursday night we kicked things off by meeting Tyge from The Opening Acts at the Basement to catch The Carter Administration [...]
Photo of Pres. Barack Obama & First Lady Michelle Obama via Huffington Post This was definitely an unexpected and surprising story to hear of this morning via the FuseBox Radio/BlackRadioIsBack.com Twitter page this morning while moving on to the 9 to 5, especially after the weirdness of NASA bombing the Moon (yeah, that was real). However people feel about President Obama, his current accomplishments and/or leadership style in regards to qualifying for the Nobel Peace Prize (personally, I feel it's a bit soon, but the Nobel Peace Prizes [...]

"Pigs (Three Different Ones)" by Pink Floyd which clocks in at 11:28 . Animals , Pink Floyd's fifth proper studio album, is a concept album loosely based upon the ideas put forth in George Orwell's classic socio-political commentary Animal Farm . In the book, various social classes are depicted by animals on a farm and Pink Floyd used these same metaphors (dogs as businessmen, pigs as politicians, and sheep as the powerless lower/middle class) to comment on mid/late '70s Western societies in the three songs [...]
Word arrives today from the fine (and scrappy) chaps of The Carter Administration that they are dipping into the back catalog and also trying out this whole Internet thing. From an email the band sent... Continue reading "The Carter Administration Get Bomb-Ass: Singles and More Singles" >

You know that friend who seems to have every great album ever made— on vinyl ? Well, President Barack Obama has just become that guy. According to a recent Rolling Stone piece , a secret treasure trove of classic records is just sitting around collecting dust in the White House mansion. It seems that past presidents rocked out to a donated collection of LPs that includes not only stalwarts like the Rolling Stones, Neil Young and Led Zeppelin but also seminal punk rock from the likes of the Sex Pistols and the Ramones and [...]
![Is The White House Just An Awesome Clubhouse Designed By An Eight-Year-Old Boy? [Don't Worry About The Government's Taste In Music]](http://cache.elbo.ws/posts/1482652_lg.jpg)
For an edifice designed to house and represent the seat of national and international power, it sure seems like the White House could have been diagrammed in crayon on college-ruled notebook paper during third period. We know there's a bowling alley, of course—which Barack Obama is going to replace with a basketball court, as any modern eight-year-old would. There's a private chef who can make you mac and cheese or pizza rolls, even after midnight!!! There's a pool, a dog, a helicopter, spy equipment, secret rooms for ordering missile strikes, and lots of long hallways to skateboard [...]
Inside the White House Record Library When Barack Obama moved into the White House on January 20th, he gained access to five chefs, a private bowling alley — and a killer collection of classic LPs. Stored in the basement of the executive mansion is the official White House Record Library: several hundred LPs that include landmark albums in rock (Led Zeppelin IV, the Rolling Stones' Let It Bleed), punk (the Ramones' Rocket to Russia, the Sex Pistols' Never Mind the Bollocks, Here's the Sex Pistols), cult classics (Captain Beefheart's Trout Mask Replica, the Flying Burrito Brothers' [...]

Ten Best Political Speeches of All Time by Alex Carnevale The art of oratory is in a strange place, as John McWhorter pointed out in a recent article in The New Republic. The shift that has taken place has been driven by technological change: Part of the difference between our era and earlier times is technology. Speakers in the early twentieth century and before had to get their message across in large spaces without microphones. ...They were experienced by most from [...]

2008 Was A Year When Music Was Made As far as unassuming titles of BIG 'N' GROUNDBREAKING blog posts go (NB: this is neither big nor groundbreaking) this one is at the top of the pile, shouting profanities at all the other blog people in the Blogosphere for being such pompous pricks in the wake of The New Year. 2008 was a year that music was made; that much is right. There was enough Bloody Brilliant music offered to The Average Music Listener to keep [...]

Sometimes people ask me what my favorite blog is besides my own and I say " Joe Blog ." I don't always feel like explaining that Joe Blog is not the work of anyone named Joe (that would be my other favorite Joe Blog, Bitten Tongue ), but rather one Elizabeth Czyzewski. You know Liz as the girl with the awesome Weezy lip tattoo from the bad tattoos post . Joe Blog is all the things a good blog should be: informative, concise, and entertaining . I talked Liz into guest posting. She's chosen The [...]

Always closest to the flame Ever closer to the blade I am poison crazy lush Built these hands to lift me up We are servants to our formulaic ways I am not an economist. John McCain and I share a stated lack of understanding about the economy. Hell, I'm not even that good with managing money. So, I'm really the last person in the world who should be writing about the current American economic crisis. But I've really gotten sucked in to this latest Bush mediated catastrophe, particularly into how it came [...]

While Sunday is the official last night of the festival -closing out with a special Next Big Nashville edition of Nashville Sunday Night at 3rd and Lindsley - Saturday night is the last real night of showcases, and you have nine to choose from before the official after party at City Hall. What Barack Obama and John McCain Can Learn From the Ten Best Political Speeches of All Time by Alex Carnevale The art of oratory is in a strange place, as John McWhorter pointed out in a recent article in The New Republic. I will give Barack Obama credit for this: he doubled down on his bet. And it might just pay off. This speech is probably never going to go down in history. I doubt it will be widely quoted in 50 years. It was a direct attack on McCain on substance, but he took just enough sharp edges off by insisting that McCain is misguided, not evil. It was filled with the kind of red meat that liberals absolutely crave, so the conventional political wisdom will probably question if it appeals to moderates. If 2004 proved anything, [...]
