W ith Primavera Club (aka Primavera Sound 's little winter brother) less than a month away, I for one am getting mightily excited. I'm flying to Barcelona in a little under two weeks, (Eliza will follow a little later) and we'll be spending the holiday season there (at my mom's house), only returning home in early January. I've collected ten tracks that I'd like to see played over the five days of the festival.. 1. So Cow [...]
The Subjects - Free song - Winter Vacation off their New Soft Shoe EP Daytrotter: "The line I want to use to describe The Subjects is from the exasperated phone call scene in 'Back to Future', where Marvin Berry- wth his bloddy, bandaged playing hand - punches his cousin Chuck's phone number and says, "You know that new sound you've been looking for? Well, listen to this..." The Washington Post: "(Dave Sheinkopf's) pleasantly nasal voice floats over the jangly guitars with just enough off-beat accents and unhinged passion." Consequence Of Sound: [...]

Few rooms offer what Bowery does in terms of acoustics; dial your levels right onstage and the Ballroom's soundsystem and resonant effects will do the rest. With Cass McCombs's fourth LP, the endlessly repeatable Catacombs , the traveling troubadour has never been quite so forthright with his lyrical content: he's singing about what's on his mind, and what's on his mind is mostly what's in his heart. So Bowery was the right room for this late-support show of his latest LP, where the bed of Korg keys and gently swelling pedal steel guitars could color, but never color over, [...]

Monday: Cass McCombs @ Bowery Ballroom 7pm $15 [ tix ] Over the course of his last two albums Cass McCombs has truly gone through some sort of metamorphosis, transitioning from dreamy bedroom pop to a cleaner, better produced, and wordier version of himself. The focus on the lo-fi sound of his past has been taken off and instead casts a blinding spotlight on his abilities as a songwriter. Thus far McCombs has been up to the task crafting deep, emotional songs that are worthy of all the attention he's received these past couple [...]

First of all, these lists are all opinions, so you can't really say a list is "good" or "bad". You can only say stuff like "I disagree with this list" or "Whoever made this list has different tastes than I have". That being said, this list sucks. *Lil Wayne giggle*. Saw it at Stereogum . 50 The Lonely Island - Incredibad 49 Rodrigo y Gabriela - 11:11 48 Thao - Know Better Learn Faster 47 Mayer Hawthorne - A Strange Arrangement 46 Noisettes - [...]

NYC/Portland's Trevor Giuliani isn't singer-songwriter material; this is way too structured to be your basic singer-songwriter. Subcontrario (In Stereo) , the new album from Trevor Giuliani makes layed pop music that works well for the coffee shop crowd as well as those looking for very detailed and colorful tunes. Sounding like the next Swedish multi-instrumentalist sensation, Trevor Giuliani takes his many influences and translates them in this lush and catchy album filled with a seemingly carefree notion. Nothing seems forced or fake...just fun. Buy Subcontrario (In [...]

One Sunday afternoon late this past summer, my wife, Sara and I were driving down a lightly-populated country road that on one side was separated from the Long Island Sound by a thin barrier of marsh grass and bordered on the other by modest summer homes. As we rounded a curve, we passed two young women walking against the traffic, both holding small, terrier-like dogs. Glimpsed quickly as our car passed, the women, wearing high heels, short dresses and full make up, seemd oddly out of place. "Trashy girls and their trashy dogs," my wife said, and then we were [...]

Cass McCombs - Dreams-Come-True-Girl (feat. Karen Black)
Many themes are familiar throughout the world of music. That love and companionship provided by a particular someone - ultimately as he so puts it - will save one's life is certainly somewhat common. This song along with the rest on this record are reportedly about Cass McCombs' ...
Donewaiting presents Blitzen Trapper and Wye Oak at Skully's on Tuesday, October 13. More info can be found here . Before the interview begins, some obligatory praise for Wye Oak's sophomore release, The Knot (listen to it, in full, at the end of the interview). Admittedly I was relatively unfamiliar with the duo (Jenn Wasner - guitars/vocals, Andy Stack - drums, keyboards) other than checking out a couple of MP3s from If Children that we posted last year on the site. That being said, within [...]

I know this is fascinating to no one but myself, but here goes: I listened to 103 unique albums from beginning to end during the last three months. Those albums broken down by the year and/or decade of their release: 2009: 11 2008: 6 2000–07: 25 1990s: 16 1980s: 19 1970s: 8 1960s: 14 1950s: 3 Continuing the trend seen the last time I did this , I'm listening to albums from the 80s and 90s far more than the 70s and earlier, due [...]
