Whoah, this was unexpected. We knew Portland experimental rock/folk/etc. trio Ghost to Falco had been touring a lot, but we didn't know there was a record coming out so soon. The band, currently in Europe, will release third full-length Exotic Believers as a vinyl-only release before the month is out. If you haven't checked out Ghost to Falco, you really should. Eric Crespo's group plays a lyrically conscious experimental folk-pop with nods to post-punk acts like Fugazi and Cursive. Just when one anticipates Crespo's next twist or turn, he injects a jazzy departure or wall of [...]

More gold bricks in the wall of soundalikes Phil Spector's revolutionary production techniques and monumental chart success in the early '60s spawned a lot of imitations, some of which hit, but many more of which passed by virtually unnoticed. Ace Records continues their collection of Wall of Sound tributes and knock-offs with a third volume that's more varied in quality than the first two. To be sure, there are some tremendous gems here, well worth the price of this disc, but there are also wanna-be productions that have all the earmarks, but not the [...]

NSo it's a shame I didn't write this about four months ago, because I simply don't remember much anymore. And also because nobody really cares about Northside anymore, do they? Ah, well, that's what I get for being lazy. In fact, I wouldn't bother to write about day three if I hadn't seen a fantastic set by Bishop Allen that night. The fact that Bishop Allen was going to play Northside was the original reason for my interest in the festival. It was also the one show I wanted to go to terribly, and the one show I [...]

Evangelista Prince of Truth (2009, Constellation) RIYL = Gowns, Castanets, Valet I never figured I would find another album this year to contend with Ben Frost's By The Throat in terms of apocalyptic tension and aural austerity, but Prince of Truth definitely makes a run for it. Album opener, "The Slayer", embodies just what its title implies, a gnarled, jarringly gritty opus that cuts like a dull axe. Carla Bozulich, the searingly brutal songstress of Evangelista, takes no prisoners again on Prince of Truth [...]
Ik denk er wel eens over om mijn baard te laten staan. Ik haat namelijk scheren. Een verschrikkelijke waste of time. Reken maar eens uit hoeveel tijd een man verdoet met het gladtrekken van zijn huid gedurende zijn hele leven....

Hello, Portland, how are you? I've got news. Tons of things to tell you. Here we go. 1. I noticed something neat on the Artistery site. A "label launch" in January for an imprint called Infinite Front . I'd never heard the label name (though there's a nice ring to it), but the bands listed were very familiar: Castanets, Ohioan, Ghost to Falco, Dragging an Ox Through Water. The label's website (which has not been fleshed out yet) [...]
The last time I caught up with Castanets was their (or his if we go straight to the source: Raymond Raposa) 2004 record Cathedral which is where that 'You Are The Blood' track came from, the only song I can remember offhand.

Saturday night's lineup at Buster's had things flipped around a little bit, in my humble opinion. The highlight of my night was the first act which was Louisville's (formerly) very own Papa M . For those not aware of the significance or depth of Papa M's career, then allow me to lay it out real quick. Throughout the late 80s and early 90s the music scene in Louisville was one of the most progressive, important, and underrated scenes in recent music history. You might not be aware of how much of the music [...]

After staying up yesterday and watching so much football I was seeing double. The Canes continue to develop into a fantastic team (it's all about that U baby!), Iowa held on against the other U of M, Florida State continues to deteriorate, and well Florida played hard enough to get by. In addition to that I crammed a few hours of The President's Cup into the mix. Golf is generally BORING to watch, but when you put the players in a vice grip and compete for points and pride, something happens...golf becomes exciting. Anyway, after all that I [...]
