The beers were flavorful, and the indie-rock was tasty — all that was missing from the first Hollywood Brew Fest on Saturday at the Fonda Theatre was a good crowd. The event went flat under a sparse turnout, despite a formidable beer menu and a reasonable-for-an-event-of-its -kind ticket price of $45 (which got you unlimited tastings in nifty 5-ounce glasses all night). The music certainly wasn't lacking in hops. Great Northern [that's Rachel Stolte, pictured at top], Nico Stai and Castledoor turned in typically energetic sets, and Samuel Stewart and [...]

Craft beer meets locally crafted indie rock on Saturday at the first Hollywood Brew Fest — and it's a good day to forget you ever took that big swig of PBR. The Brew Fest, which runs from 3 to 11 p.m. at the Fonda Theatre and the adjacent Blue Palms Brewhouse, offers unlimited tastings from more than 35 craft brewers. The $45 ticket price (VIP entry is $60 and gets you all kinds of special treatment) also gets you a day of beers, burgers and bands, with a formidable lineup of local rockers topped by L.A. [...]

This Saturday night in Hollywood, we're presenting a beer festival at the gorgeous MUSIC BOX @ FONDA where for the $45 ticket price, you can drink unlimited tastings of over 35 breweries while watching bands on two stages and dancing to DJ's on the rooftop. You've been to some beer festivals, you know what I'm talking about, the kind where people have their hat backwards, in some field with white tents, and if they happen to have music playing, it isn't the kind you wanna hear. We're looking to flip that [...]

I've been to a lot of residency Mondays at Spaceland over the years, and tonight's lineup, front to back, rivals any I've seen. Residents Local Natives could probably pack the place themselves, but they have two other great SoCal bands on board — the Henry Clay People and Aushua . Not to mention: Fun. , who are not to be missed. Fun (they use a period after their name) is the new project of Nate Ruess of the Format (whom I really liked back in 2006 ), Anathallo's Andrew Dost and Steel Train's [...]

[Happy birthday, Juliana Hatfield, and thanks for songs.] July goes out with a bang this week, starting with some enticing shows tonight: Jarvis Cocker headlines the Wiltern behind his recent release "Further Complications," an album that, owing to the strength of its storytelling, keeps on giving. [Cocker is giving away a remix of "You're in My Eyes (Discosong)" here .] ... I also haven't been able to stay away from "Alone," the new album from New York-based Australian psych-rockers the Morning After Girls [...]

Not surprisingly, Michael Jackson covers have been coming fast and furious these past few days. Whatever you thought of the man, you can't deny the music. CoverLayDown's got a good round-up of what's already been done, so we're going to try something a little different. Michael passed on Thursday afternoon. By concert time that evening, artists were already beginning to bust out Jackson songs in tribute, a trend that only intensified over the weekend. So here are some of those live covers, recordings of tributes performed since Jackson's death. They're in turns [...]

Oh, look a Wednesday update thingy! Actually, sorry, there's really nothing to update other than maybe all that hoopla that Largo is finally selling booze. That's not the problem, though, parking is the problem. Other than that, Monday residencies went well. Castledoor is really make a case for residency of the year with this latest weekly they're doing down at Spaceland. And if anyone knows how

Rodriguez Appears at El Rey on Saturday Strong week for shows. Unfortunately a lot of them happen on Saturday (and I can't go to any shows on Saturday).
