Good work from Molina and Johnson on their recently released album. Considering their separate output both of these guys are a real value to the American songwriter quilt. Each carry a distinct slightly off-kilter voice with a subsequent induced mood that puts a shade of particular pale on their material. There is often an isolated or lonely ambiance in the wake of Molina's voice which reminds me of a less frayed Will Oldham. Johnson brings a voice of pine tar and old ashtray; when his song is good he emits a feeling as rich in somber earth as [...]

Your local triple-A format radio station's favorite of this year's supergroup explosion stopped by 30 Rock last night. That's M. Ward, Conor Oberst, Mike Mogis, and Yim Yames, singing "Dear God (Sincerely M.O.F.)," the minor key harp and soul track from Monsters Of Folk's self-titled debut. As has been the case on tour, Centro-matic's Will Johnson is sitting behind the drums, although M.O.F. had an extra-extra special beat maker last night in ?uestlove, and the rest of the most fab Roots crew, who together made what was a simple supergroup into something like a preview of a Rock & Roll [...]
When you start to wonder how you keep playing this stark, quiet record over and over again, how a sound this desiccated could sound so bracing, the answers are found in the barely-there flourishes of collaboration. Few get more lonesome on record than Will Johnson and Jason Molina. I mean, sure Centro-matic can shake the rafters, and South San Gabriel can expand and overwhelm, and Magnolia Electric Co. often sound as big as the Midwestern sky they came up under, but as front men these guys are frayed at the edges, their voices warbling as they stare off into [...]

![Monsters of Folk & Teen Wolf [Chicago Concert Review]](http://cache.elbo.ws/posts/2097731_lg.jpg)
I had a friend named Prick Lachey who used to leave me voicemail messages from late night bars where he'd scream into the phone, "MmmmmmBEST DAY OF MY LIFE!" Those words pretty much sum up my Monsters of Folk experience. Pretty strong words considering Ticketmaster took a metaphoric dump on my head with close to $30 in meaningless charges for 2 tickets. Still trying to figure out how they enhance my concert experience. Despite that, I can't say enough good things about the show. It was held at the beautiful Auditorium Theatre in the heart of [...]

Songs That Might Otherwise Pass You By Alright, so I'm a little light on actual MP3s this week. Yesterday was my birthday, alright? Cut me some slack! I was busy at the zoo, commiserating with my fellow mammals. I also went to an excellent restaurant here in Jax called Orsay. It was awesome. If you're anywhere near hear, I highly recommend it. I got free ice cream 'cause it was my birthday, too :) I will post zoo and birthday pictures on my Facebook later, and probably my Myspace . [...]

Sitting here, watching the clock, waiting for 5 o'clock to come...but at this very second, I am totally distracted by the audio bliss trickling into my ears in the from of the new record from Jason Molina(Magnolia Electric Co., Songs: Ohia) and Will Johnson(Centro-matic). I love both of these bands, so I was counting on loving this album, but I am happy to report it is totally exceeding my expectations! It's the most beautiful sort of melancholy. Just gorgeous stuff..there is a sample for you below. The 'Molina And Johnson' record is available everywhere on November 3. [...]

Here, for no apparent reason, is a collection of bands named after places. Architecture in Helsinki I never knew the city was renowned for its flair for buildings. I guess it's catchier than Architecture in Slough. Beirut A New Mexican who named his group after a Lebanese city and plays eastern European, French and Mexican-influenced folk. Somebody has identity issues. [...]

This week on PHW I'll be running a countdown of my 50 favorite dad-rock albums of the past ten years. I'm not trying to be dramatic or self-important by doing it over 5 days and breaking it into 5 equal segments, it's more a result of the difficulty I always have in formatting posts of this nature. Blogger can be a pain in the ass with large posts featuring multiple images, and I've never figured out how to make these things look just the way I want them. Breaking it down like this makes that somewhat easier for me. [...]

World Cafe - Driving Solo (WXPN) Patterson Hood played a great set for World Café last week, aided and abetted the Screwtopians - from Centro-matic frontman Will Johnson on guitar and Scott Danborn on keyboards / fiddle plus fellow "Truckers" John Neff and Brad Morgan and the "Truckers" producer Dave Barbe on bass. Playing tracks from this years solo release "Murdering Oscar (And Other Love Songs)", Patterson answers questions on the albums genesis and the history of the tracks, chat's about screen plays and [...]
