In the Book Notes series, authors create and discuss a music playlist that relates in some way to their recently published book. Drag the Darkness Down may be Matt Baker's debut novel, but its protagonist Odom Shiloh is unforgettable in his descent into mental illness. Part detective story and part road novel, Drag the Darkness Down promises a strong literary future for Matt Baker. George Singleton wrote of the book: " Drag the Darkness Down is a brilliant picaresque novel in the tradition [...]
So it's coming to the end of the Christmas Bank Holiday and I'm about to present you all with my favourite fifty singles (as well as free downloads, this year) of 2009. Better late than never. All the songs should have been released in the UK in 2009 or made available for free download by the artists. No re-releases and only one song per artist. Unless I've made a mistake, in which case, anything goes. Spotify playlist of most of the tracks here . Thoughts? Any other suggestions? [...]

Something that has never happened in my life happened this year. I have never lived anywhere where I can honestly say that my top three favorite records of the year came out of the city in which I reside. It's been an honor, and a delight to live in Seattle this year because I have had the opportunity to see the Intelligence, BOAT and Erik Blood more times than I can count. Usually, if you're lucky you might get one chance to see your favorite band come through your town for a gig. I have had [...]
The end of the present decade is only days away, so our Frank Deserto has undertaken the massive task of presenting the highs and lows of each year. He continues this series with a look back on 2004. Hit us with your memories in the comment section. 2004 saw a remarkable shift in the musical climate. After churning for countless years in the underground, indie rock exploded, catapulting cult artists into the mainstream. Rap-metal seemed to die overnight, while a slew of smaller, less cohesive bands enjoyed success beyond their humble dreams. No longer did "indie" stand [...]

Martin Scorsese's films often serve as cinematic history lessons in popular music. Sprawling, decades-spanning opuses like Goodfellas and Casino are perpetually laced with sonic nuggets of big band, blues, and straight up rock and roll that become a sort of audiovisual poetry when combined with stylized violence and drug use. Hollywood upstart P.T. Anderson took a page straight from Scorsese's fake book (he says so in the audio commentary) and cranked it up to 11 for his breakthrough film Boogie Nights , a glitter and gutter rollercoaster ride through the adult film industry in the [...]

I'm feeling rather inspired tonight so I thought I'd write a post on one of my favourite bands of all time you've probably never heard of. I'm not trying to come off as a "massive hipster" when I say that, and you probably know frontman Aaron Scott's latter bands and projects if you're in to decent punk rock anyway, but what you may not know is the existence of De La Hoya: a straight-up punk band from Brooklyn, NY who burst on to the scene in 1997 all the way through to 2002. To quote the bio on their [...]

After an extremely long pause in our blog, we're ready to bring you back some resources to enhance your musical experience, and this time we're going to give you our new podcast named Crystal Jazz. This particular selection was carefully designed to expose those artists who, I think, are some of the most prolific and underrated geniuses of jazz music, we've researched heavily to made this selection unique, neat and pure. I would like to give you a little brief on my music roots, when I was a child, I remember my grandfather playing the piano for many [...]

From an unlikely source comes this burst of pure, live country rock and roll. Born into stardom, the younger son of Ozzie & Harriett was a teen idol with big hit singles by the age of 17. More than ten years later, the grown-up and rechristened "Rick" Nelson had developed into a Californian country rocker as fine as any, but his child-star status would forever bar him the proper recognition. Other artists of this time, like the Byrds on Sweetheart , are accused of being a rock band that merely played country - there wasn't [...]

Julian Plenti began composing music in 1996 in New York City. He first played solo acoustic shows in and around Manhattan, at venues like Tobacco Road, Pete's Candy Store, The Knitting Factory, The Living Room, and the Sidewalk Cafe's Wednesday Night Anti-hoot with Latch. In 2001, he stopped performing. Though he continued writing and doing occasional engineering work, he essentially went on sabbatical. The break ended in 2006 when Plenti acquired the music production software, Logic Pro. Logic proved to be a far greater creative asset than any other medium he'd previously encountered, allowing [...]
