So here we are at the weekend before the holiday season officially begins and everyone's schedule gets really busy, so get your music fixes in now. On Thursday night you can check out the final night of the Jenny Dee & The Deelinquints residency at the Lizard. It's also the first night of the International Pop Overthrow 4 night stint at Church. Night 1 of the IPO has The Buckners, The Doom Buggies and more. There are also 2 great free shows on Thursday, Lars Vegas is at the Alchemist and Sally O'Brien's has an impressive lineup. On Friday Thalia [...]
Last week, I had the opportunity to chat -- and, by chat, I mean "chat via the Internet" -- with a handful of independent record labels' owners and managers. I wanted to discuss the role of the label in a time when fewer people seem to know or care what labels their favorite musicians or bands are on. Furthermore, and perhaps this has always been true, we may not even know what exactly a label does . At the beginning of this decade, record labels were still a way of indexing artists; of positioning them [...]

THE BEST COMICS OF THE DECADE: Part Six: 2007-2008 Shazam! The Monster Society of Evil Jeff Smith 2007 The creator of the wonderful Bone series tries his hand at the manchild hero. The great thing about Shazam! is the innocent silliness attached to his legend: Villains are worms, his sister is also his rival, and his best pal is a talking tiger. Smith embraces this without letting it be corny or contrived. This is, hands down, one of [...]

Well, Channel 4 can hardly say they're ducking the punches. This was a tiny scratch of insanity writ large (could they have stretched it to a mini series or a phone vote? - I'll bet anything that was on the cards at some point, just grab someone from Ofcom, feed them a few drinks, and make them tell all). It started many bombs ticking; made people think about the death of TV, the death of the remix (the moment where Gary bug-eyes at the crappy remix is seventeen times more funny than intended), the death of the News, almost anything [...]

This website has been all about indie rock and underground rap since 2004. But this year on Berkeley Place, we began running regular features about our other long time love: Comics. In the process, we've become acquainted with a few folks who share that passion. Since the decade is winding down, we thought a retrospective of funnybooks for the past 10 years was in order. But how to ensure that it isn't just our narrow interests that are reflected? How to capture the breadth of some of the brands we don't read, like westerns, war [...]

Photo courtesy of Matthias All Hallows' Eve marks the perfect occasion for surrounding ourselves with the dark and evil, mysterious and haunting visions and sounds that lurk on this wicked day. Leave the sanctity of your home and enter into a world of devils, Grim Reapers, ghosts, ghouls, demons, witches, goblins, vampires, zombies, skeletons, bats, and blood covered monsters. Our friends at Fact Magazine have just the thing to see you off into the holy night; FACT Mix 96 features Chicago's Gatekeeper , the first signed to Kompakt's Michael Mayer and Jon Berry's new label, Fright - [...]
Metal and horror have always shared a bond. From Iron Maiden and their album covers to most death metal bands, there are plenty of horror movie aficionados across the heavy music spectrum. Nowhere is this more apparent than the metal music video. Here, lyrics and riffs can be the soundtrack to a murder, haunting, or something more sinister. In honor of All Hallows' Eve, here are the seven best examples of horror movie metal videos. - Chris Rowella Note: These are probably NSFW, unless your workplace [...]

1. Batman: The Brave and the Bold. If you have kids and you're not watching Cartoon Network's, "Batman; The Brave & The Bold," you're a bad parent. Yes, it's a little campy (just like the "Batman!" show of the 1960s), but that's part of its charm: A superhero cartoon . . . for kids! An increasingly rare commodity these days. The second season began with an OMAC episode, and promises an Outsiders appearance, guests like Hawk and Dove, and, get this, a musical. Produced by James "Animaniacs" Tucker, this show proves [...]
I, unfortunately, have not had time to whip up a Halloween mix but some great bloggers and musicians are here to save the day. The five following mixtapes should be enough to keep your party going all night. And please tune in to UtahFM.org to hear me keeping it creepy from 9-10:30PM on Oct31. Plenty of horror film themes and other evil tracks to bring the house down. First up, Fever Ray has put together this exceptionally well crafted and appropriately themed mix of songs for Resident Advisor. Some have [...]

At 7PM on Saturday evening rain pelted down on the streets of NYC. The Yankee game was canceled, people were running for shelter under canopies and those inside their homes, comfortable on their couches, were quickly making phone calls to push back prior made reservations. It was one of those nights where it was nearly impossible to catch a cab. For those who joined Duck Down's roster of artists at Gramercy Theater Saturday night, even the torrential downpour was not going to stop their intentions of seeing an action-packed night of music. At 8PM doors opened into the [...]

I realize that I post a lot of news and finds on my twitter @eardrums that never gets published on the blog. I'll try to post some of it here and also some of the stuff I get in my mailbox that I never manage to do something about. I'm hopeless with continuity, but I will at least try to do this weekly. Let's start with some "VERY SHORTIES" and below this, you will find a lot of free goodies: [...]

CMJ released the band schedule for its 2009 Music Marathon & Film Festival yesterday, which is about as good a sign of fall hitting New York as the return of apple cider at Greenmarket. The festival runs from Oct. 20 - Oct. 24 and includes various venues throughout the city, and the list of featured artists would probably take all four days to read through. But skimming the selection reveals a fairly equal distribution of well-known acts like Atlas Sound and Deer Tick , anonymous locals (including krautrock-y Jeff Buckley-channelers Pocketknife), twenty-two bands who [...]

In the Book Notes series, authors create and discuss a music playlist that relates in some way to their recently published book. Libba Bray's novel Going Bovine , a modern day Don Quixote tale, hurtles through time and space with self-effacing humor. Mad cow disease, string theory, punk fairies, and animated lawn gnomes, combine with Bray's storytelling genius to produce one of the year's funniest and most surprisingly moving books. Catch Libba Bray reading (with Lev Grossman ) at the first edition of the Largehearted Lit reading series on [...]
The press release below doesn't actually list all the acts performing at CMJ this year, so you're probably better off checking out cmj.sched.org to get a true idea of what's happening during this year's marathon. Of course, sched.org is a little confusing too and it doesn't list unofficial events and day parties (as far as I know), so you'll have to wait a little bit longer for info to trickle out from the blogs and other unofficial sources. Lastly, even though the press release says the schedule is "final", you can pretty much bet that things will shift [...]
