It was my first time seeing Reigning Sound live, and it was certainly worth the drive to Detroit. The city's garage-rock faction was well represented. I'm told that was Detroit Cobras guitarist Mary Ramirez front-and-center for most of the night, singing and dancing like a superfan. Head Reigning Sound honcho Greg Cartwright , a legend in garage-rock circles for his work in the '90s with the Oblivians , was appreciative, taking several opportunities to thank everyone for coming out on a Monday night and calling Detroit "my home away from home." Russian Circle's third release, Geneva , starts out as such a damned promising record, coming out of the chute with 3 of their thickest, heaviest, and most memorable tunes yet. But through poor pacing and scatter shot stylistic change ultimately the album feels like a disappointment and a missed opportunity. Past albums have worked by gradually ratcheting down the pace such as Talking Heads' Remain In Light , but Geneva's diminishing returns don't pack much of a dramatic punch. [...]

Kidz In The Hall always seems to exist on the fringes of both mainstream and underground hip-hop circles. The duo of Naledge and Double-O have dropped a pair of solid, albeit flawed, albums that have caught the eye of MTV and other mainstream outlets. But these guys just never really took off.
