It's never easy to map out an entire decade in music. So, in constructing the "Decade in Music" interactive timeline , we sought to shape it with some of the bigger tent-pole trends, news (Elton John performing with Eminem) and groundbreaking changes in the industry, business and technology (Napster, the iPod). We also wanted to highlight albums (Britney Spears, Danger Mouse, Radiohead) that took a snapshot of the era, as well as deaths (Ray Charles, Johnny Cash) that affected everyone. And, of course, we wanted to include the occasional "wardrobe malfunction" controversy or bizarre curiosity ("Trapped in the Closet") [...]

I've thought long and hard about the list favorite music for the past decade and the year. When I start thinking about it, I start to panic. There's too much good music to lump in a simple list. There's albums that I've listened to when I was on top of the world that will stay with me forever, and others when I've thought that life was cruel and hoped for death. NPR has done a fantastic job of compiling a comprehensive and fair list of the decade's treasures. You can read more, here . [...]
Surrounded by flames and an aura of [...]

The problem with a list like this is the "shoulds". You know, the albums you feel like everyone else will pick, so you "should," too? Well, this time I decided not to deal with those. My list is based on the number of times I listened to these albums since they came out, whether I love them so much I already know every word to every song, how much it moved me, etc. This is a personal list. It isn't intended to be complete or controversial. That said, I know I'll get crap for [...]
...at least according to NPR listeners . Check it out after the jump, then read and listen to the whole All Songs Considered piece HERE . I've really enjoyed reading all these "decade-end" lists so far, and in my opinion this list seems to come closest to accurately reflecting the decade in music. If you're interested, you can also find a running list of such lists at largehearted boy . Check 'em out and see what made the decade in music for everyone. Here's NPRs list of "The Decade's 50 Most Important Recordings": [...]

Being the young age I am (under 30) this last decade was really the one where I can intensely focus on new releases, critically analyze and find real magic in modern music. As much as I wish I was cool enough to say I bought "Slanted and Enchanted" on vinyl the day it came out or smoke a joint and sit around with my friends about to listen to "The Bends follow-up album" with everyone saying "this better not suck!" But since I never saw Nirvana in a basement and didn't hear "Loveless" until Billy Corgan recommended it I'll just stick to [...]
Even if you "didn't like" Some Loud Thunder because Clap Your Hands Say Yeah were passe, you can come back now; this album is really good.

I've heard of, but never heard Clap Your Hands Say Yeah. So I have no basis of comparison for founding member Alec Ounsworth's solo release Mo Beauty. And I have to say I won't be running to listen to Clap Your Hands Say Yeah's music if it's at all like this album. It's not a [...]

Man/Miracle - "Hot Sprawl" Man/Miracle played a great set the other night at the Rickshaw Stop, and their debut full length The Shape of Things is an infectious collection of nervy songs recommended especially for fans of Talking Heads, The Feelies, and Clap Your Hands Say Yeah. This Saturday (8pm, $5), the band celebrates the new CD's release at Oakland's LoBot Gallery , with Golden Gram and Quinn. Non-Bay Areans: their MySpace page announces plans to tour in the first few [...]

What happens when the rhythm section of a band grows up together and meets with a couple of guys who also grew up together and comprise the melody section? You get a band like Spring Tigers. Add in a pretty talented vocalist (and guitarist and soapbox preacher) and big things are bound to happen. While no one knows for sure why front man Kris Barratt can't go back home ("I can't tell you why, but I'll be kneecapped!") its good for all of us that he was forced to make friends in the Athens, GA music scene. [...]

This was the greatest decade of music for me as a fan. There were so many incredible albums, almost all by bands I'd never even heard of in 2000, discovered almost entirely through the same musical venue that you are reading write now -- the Internet. At the dawn of the decade, I was approaching a rock fan milestone that presumably signaled the end of my interest in cool new music (I turned 30 in 2001), while at the same time, the rock music industry (ie. whatever they played on the radio) had devolved into a hybrid of cheap rap-rock [...]
As far as solo debuts go, Alec Ounsworth's Mo Beauty (Anti-) is impressive. The Philadelphia-based Clap Your Hands Say Yeah frontman travelled to New Orleans to record the album with producer Steve Berlin (Los Lobos) and a host of the city's notable musicians, including bassist George Porter, Jr. (Meters), drummer Stanton Moore and keyboardist Robert Walter (Greyboy [...]

I Guess I'm Floating and Hot Brown Mess are bringing to town a fantastic show with the Evangelicals and the Holiday Shores . Not only that, but they have hooked us up with a pair of tickets to give to one of our readers. Comment below with your favorite band originating from the mid-west (excluding Evangelicals and the Flaming Lips). We'll announce a winner on Wednesday. Good luck. More details below... click here to support the artist Sounds like: Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Au Revoir Simone, The Apples In Stereo what's so good? "Uninhabited Mansions is a Brooklyn-based art collective and band. We make music and publish books and do a few other things." I can't remember the last band bio I read that said so much by saying so little. I love it. Robbie Guertin, UM's primary vocalist/guitarist (who is also a member of Clap Your Hands Say [...]
