Photo by Harlz_ In 2005, Australian rock outfit Children Collide made their debut with We Three, Brave & True . Featuring the brilliant "We Are Amphibious", the six-track EP didn't so much announce the group's arrival as it did kick the door down. In 2006, the equally impressive Glass Mountain Liars EP followed, & now the band is elated to present their full-length debut, The Long Now . The 1st single, "Social Currency", is a barnstorming disco-political frenzy that observes the perils [...]

Having just listened to their current album 'The Monstrous Vanguard' I have to say Kittens Ablaze deserve all the praise and recognition they have received to date. OK here's the setting. I have some sort of virus and am running a fever. I am feeling sorry for myself, and am not really in the mood for music. If I want to hear anything it needs to be gentle and soothing, however there is an album in my inbox & I feel obliged to give at least one song a listen. Half an hour later I am [...]

Colorado's Monolith Festival is in trouble. Organizers of the three-year-old event, plagued the past two years by fractious Rocky Mountain weather, told fans in an e-mail "the future of the festival is very grim," and that they have "been unable to secure any options" that dig the fest out of its financial hole. Included was a plea for potential buyers/investors. [Full text of the letter after the jump.] Meanwhile, Bonnaroo announced its ninth annual event will be held June 10-13, 2010, near Manchester, Tenn. Tickets go on sale at noon Nov. 27. Meanwhile, only 148 days [...]
Uhmemba the Cops ? That frenzied, Clash-loving, back-alley punk band? They disbanded at the end of last year . I wept (internally). Not one to sit on his laurels, scrappy guitarist/vocalist Mike Jaworski -who also owns and operates local label Mt. Fuji Records -has created a new band: Virgin Islands . It's a lot like the Cops, but even dirtier and more frenzied. Jagged, even. Whoa and double-whoa . The new EP is called The Age of Anxiety [...]

Mose Allison - New Parchman ( buy ) "I went downtown tryin´ to do what´s right, don´t let nobody tell you them dogs won´t bite..." Is it jazz, is it blues, is it boogie woogie? Actually, it´s just Mose doin´ his thing. It seems like Mose Allison is somewhat forgotten now, but once upon a time many a giant of rock covered his fine songs: the Who ( Young Man Blues ), the Yardbirds, Blue Cheer and even the Clash paid tribute to the ´William [...]
Vampire Weekend's Ezra Koenig earned super respect from this writer when during a recent interview with Pitchfork, he was asked to discuss the spoiled white-kid label often given to him and his band. He answer was priceless : When people try to frame us as these spoiled rich kids, I want to say, "Well, hold up. You don't know anything about my family, you don't know where I went to high school, you don't know how I paid for college." I mean, I grew up in New Jersey listening to the Ramones, the Clash, [...]
I don't know what to say about this remake of a very good, very influential movie, other than to say you could see it coming with blinders on and it looks like utter crap. Okay, okay. The movie itself doesn't look bad, but that trailer. My god. I'm no rocket scientist but what is up with the Limp Bizkit score and the movie's tagline: "Titans Will Clash"? The movie is called Clash of the Titans and the best the marketing department could come up with as a slogan/tagline is titans will clash. [...]

So todays entry, Police and Thieve s , is not some half-baked attempt to do a back to back Clash feature on VG , even though they did a brilliant job covering it back in the day. Nope, it's a so-cute-you-want-to-hug-the-sh it-out-of-it twee-pop cover of Junior Murvin 's best and brightest, by France's G et Back Guinozzi. [...]
I'm gearing up to see Devo on Friday and have been revisiting the classic era of synth-punk, a genre the band had very much to do with pioneering during their earlier years. The genre combines the intense, guitar-driven fury of punk rock with often sloppy and simplistic synth mashing. Though the instrumentation may be the same, synth-punk has little in common with new wave, the fluffier, more pop-driven counterpart. Synth-punk was often gritty, poorly recorded, nasty, and powerful as sin. With that in mind, let's touch upon a few genre classics, both new and old. [...]

Known for his highly literate lyrics on his solo work, along with his time spent in the Auteurs and Black Box Recorder, Luke Haines has a new album out called 21st Century Man . Jarvis Cocker's oddly priapic solo release this year, Further Complications , was mostly disappointing, but for those looking for a witty, smart and musical Cocker-like album for 2009, they should definitely check out Mr. Haines' new work. Neil Young wrote Southern Man as an anti-slavery missive about the American South, and with his new album, Haines [...]

Ben put this on his Lost In Paris spotify playlist in September and I've been listening to it ever since. Really cute cover of the clash by Toulon's (France!) Get Back Guinozzi , their debut record 'Carpet Madness" is out on Fat Cat records and you can get it here . Get Back Guinozzi - Police and Thieves
Listen to the new Beach House single "Norway" from the forthcoming album Teen Dream Over at NPR, Carrie Brownstein has an engrossing roundtable with the heads of many big indie labels about the role of the record label In a very rare occurrence, Velvet Underground members to share the stage at the New York Public Library on December 8th XLR8R goes under the hood of A Place To Bury Strangers' massive signature guitar sound SXSW 2010 [...]

The problem with a list like this is the "shoulds". You know, the albums you feel like everyone else will pick, so you "should," too? Well, this time I decided not to deal with those. My list is based on the number of times I listened to these albums since they came out, whether I love them so much I already know every word to every song, how much it moved me, etc. This is a personal list. It isn't intended to be complete or controversial. That said, I know I'll get crap for [...]

Add the name of Mose Allison to the list of American musical legends producer Joe Henry has brought to a new audience through Epitaph's Anti imprint. Soul, folk, and country icons with Anti albums to their credits include Ramblin' Jack Elliott, Solomon Burke, Mavis Staples, Merle Haggard, and Bettye LaVette, and now the greatest living jazz singer/songwriter/pianist expands the circle. Anti is set to release The Way of the World , Allison's first album since 1997's Blue Note swan song Gimcracks and Gewgaws , on March 23 of next year. The Way [...]

Pavla Kopecna All throughout Theoretical Girl's set at SxSW back in March , I was wracking my brain trying to figure out who Amy Turnnidge, she who is the central abstract idea of the band, reminded me of. This didn't keep me from enjoying her set, but it was a relief and head slap when I finally put it together a week or two later - the name I'd been trying to dig out of my memory banks was Sarah Blackwood. Not the icy electro-pop queen she now is with Client , [...]

It's official: Slayer and Megadeth are co-headlining a U.S. tour under the fitting moniker American Carnage and hit up the UIC Pavillion Feb 5th for any of you old enough or metal enough to care. The Bay Area's Testament will be opening making this a virtual Clash of the Titans 2010. Yes, 19 years later all 3 bands are hitting the road again with new records in tow. Adding to the "what is this the early 90's" [...]

The Clash of the Titans 1991 tour was one of the most epic and spectacular series of metal gigs to ever have graced the planet, basically making various venues in the US and Europe the very center of the scene for a day. Now, Megadeth and Slayer are set to embark on a tour of almost equal proportions in 2010, called the American Carnage Tour. They even brought on Testament as openers to re-create the Clash of the Titans vibe. The bands haven't forgot the harsh times we all live in either and have introduced [...]
