Athen's Twin Tigers aren't playing the actual Festival in the park, but are making an appearance at one of the official Afterparties on Saturday night, and I highly recommend you make a stop to see the Tigers at work. The band has a full length recording Grey Waves, set for release in early 2010 and it's already secured a spot as one of my favorite releases for the year. Shoegazey, soft-punk, whatever you want to call it, it rocks. Twin Tigers @ Mohawk Sat night with Voxtrot, Octopus Project, The Coathangers, Jazzus Lizard (Jesus [...]

Words and Pictures by Dan Kober The Vancouver two-piece, Japandroids, did not put on much of a show in Philadelphia. The whole experience felt like being stuck in some sad version of Limp Bizkit's "Break Stuff" video. But these guys were singing about French-kissing French girls and getting drunk in the basement, rather than breaking a human face. I'll gladly take the former over the latter, but that's not much of a compliment. It was also pretty upsetting to see these...
I was recently granted an interview with A Place to Bury Strangers vocalist and guitarist, Oliver Ackermann. He graciously took some time out of his busy schedule to discuss the band's touring history, new record Exploding Head , and vinyl pressing craziness. The aforementioned new album further expands on APTBS' history of noise drenched, shoegaze, guitar freakouts. It's an excellent sophomore release and definitely takes the songwriting to a new level for the band. The album is a touch more user friendly than the last album, but it most definitely as interesting. We, at Rocksellout, [...]

Okay, I totally forgot that Vivian Johnson had taken these shots of the Scion Garage Festival last Saturday (the Black Lips/Roky Erickson show at Berbati's and the Spits/Coathangers sets at Dante's in particular). But boy are they good photos, so here they are anyway. Hopefully this weekend is as fun for everyone as the last one is. I know I, for one, am going to leave the office. Japanadroids ,/ The Coathangers / Tober Omi (The Cavern) : Trying to figure out what Japandroids is going for, versus what they actually do , is a real head-scratcher. On their page, they claim that they are play Garage Rock." I've even read a couple of reviews that supported that description. Now, there a lot of times when I'm told about some "crazy," "noisy," "completely fucked up" band that gets a lot of attention from Terminal Boredom or Art For Spastics , and I'll hear it and say, "Oh, that's just Garage [...]

Let this serve as the reminder for our post back in August ... The Atlanta-based The Coathangers are coming to Louisville's Cahoots on October 10th with Louisville phenoms. The tour is in support of their April release Scramble . which received a respectable 7.2 from Pitchfork . These riot grrrl post-punk spew sometimes angry, sometimes funny, sometimes political songs in an energetic and enrapturing way. This tour finds them touring with Nerve Hunt (members of Wavves and Teeth Mountain ), Japandroids , and Young Widows beginning at [...]

[10/06/09; The Barbary] [Photo: parallelliott] The Coathangers and Japandroids played an early/all ages/no booze show Tuesday night at The Barbary. There was a third band, but I didn't make it there on time, so I don't know who it was, and as a bad journalist (who sometimes mistakes Keith for Ben), I'm not going to look it up. Sam C., a friend of mine working on his philosophy diss at UMass Amherst who had an article titled "Could Batman Have Been The Joker?" published in [...]

The Japandroids - duo from Vancouver B.C. can't quite put your finger on. They got some soaring dare that feels like my youth when I used to go see bands like this who rocked hard, but at the time created beautiful distortion at places like the grog shop, the Euclid tavern and Speak in Tongues. This type of music really has a soft place in my heart for when I used to listen to all band that were post hardcore/emo, and everything in between. While this band is only a duo they beautiful noise that they are [...]

Wow, it's already October. I guess time flies when you're having fun or something like that. On Friday I'm torn about the Dinosaur Jr show at the Middle East for a little Pioneer Valley rock or Jay Retard at Harpers or Jetset and Highland Moore at the Plough, too many choices. Saturday has another good night of music with Ra Ra Riot at the Paradise (I love their Rhumb Line cd but have never seen them live yet), a great local line up at TTs with Sidewalk Driver, The Motion Sick, Aloud and John Powhida's International Airport and yet another [...]

The Austin City Limits Festival is this weekend, and while it will unfortunately take place minus Merry Swankster representation, there's no reason to sour an otherwise tremendous month of music in the Lone Star State. But just for fun, here's who'd I see if I were making the trip to Austin: Blitzen Trapper, Avett Brothers, the Walkmen, Phoenix, Los Amigos Invisibles, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Deer Tick, the Ravonettes, !!!, Grizzly Bear, Flogging Molly, …And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead, Bon Iver, Mos Def, the Decemberists, the Dodos, Heartless Bastards, Arctic Monkeys, Dirty Projectors, [...]
