BEST ALBUMS OF THE NOUGHTIES The daunting task of putting together something that you know lots of readers won't agree with is never easy, but then we thought you could always go make your own lists. At least we had the balls... So the 50s had rock n roll, the 60s had it's pop and folk, the 70s it's punk, disco and glam, the 80s it's pop, hip hop and hair rock, the 90s it's grunge, brit pop and dance music. It begs the question - what standout genre defines the [...]

Is this really the end? Were Burnt By The Sun really going to play their first, last and only proper London show on a cold Thursday evening in October? Yes, yes they were. Hugh Platt scribbled, Tom Blessington took snaps. "The end of an era". "You don't know how much you'll miss something till it's gone". "Criminally under-rated". All phrases that get mooched about with such abandon in the music press that they've long lost any real meaning. In Burnt By The [...]

Have been listening to Harvey's famed '98 Essential Mix plenty in these last sunny weeks, and every time remember how much I fucking adore this song. It really is classic beyond classic. I think I slightly prefer Larry 's remix to the original 12" mix, since it's a bit better structured for the club and it seems a hair beefier. It's just one of those songs where every element is memorable and the whole thing comes together perfectly. Pretty much as good as it gets as far as I'm concerned. Instant Funk [...]

Some country called England thrashed another country called Croatia for a score of 5-1 recently and they are talking smack about them winning some thing called the World Cup. Everyone knows that's pork trotters compared the amount of thrashing I do, which is everyday. In fact, I am thrashing now ... ... Yes dear, yeah, talking to my imaginary friend again. No way, she does not have bigger boobs than you. Nope. Yeah, I've put out the thrash. I'm good at it aren't I? You're so sweet. Freshly backed scones [...]

With Gang Wizard , it's best to Catch as Catch Can. They put out so much product you could throw your back out trying to harness it all, so take it easy, Jack. If one were forced to give GW's brand of evil a Name, I'd say they are essentially a noise-freak improv troupe with one foot in the gutter and one in the No Fun Fest. They never shirk their duties, delivering the dungeon-dwelling dregs album in, album out, and The Atlas of Cancer [...]

American Dust julkaisee 22. syyskuuta tribuuttilevyn Crayon Angel: A Tribute To The Music Of Judee Sill . Uudelleen löydetyn amerikkalaisen laulaja-lauluntekijän Sillin tuotantoa tulkitsemaan on saatu nimekäs joukko, johon kuuluvat mm. Beth Orton, Bill Callahan, Final Fantasy, Marissa Nadler ja Frida Hyvönen. Tuttujen kappaleiden lisäksi levyltä löytyy myös kaksi uutta Judee Sillin sävellystä (Beth Orton: Reach For The Sky ja Bill Callahan: Like A Rainbow), jotka on tulkittu levylle jäljelle jääneiden nuottien pohjalta. Lahjakkaan Judee Sillin (1944-1979) ura jäi ainoastaan kahden varsinaisen albumin mittaiseksi (1971 Judee Sill ja 1973 Heart Food [...]
Compulsion's album Comforter was the first time I realised that an Irish band could produce music on a par with everything else I was listening to at the time. I think it was when Pearl Jam's Vs album was on repeat play in my teenage bedroom that Comforter found a home in my life. They were a punk influenced indie alternative act who probably suffered from the 'sound like Nirvana' tag! Here's some background info: In 1992 Compulsion was formed by Joey Barry also known as Joseph Mary. Joining him [...]

Judee Sill was the first artist signed to David Geffen's Asylum Records and released two fine LPs, 1971's Judee Sill and 1973's Heart Food , before vanishing from the music scene and eventually dying of a drug overdose in North Hollywood in 1979. Crayon Angel: A Tribute To the Music of Judee Sill will be released on September 22nd on American Dust. audio: Frida Hyvönen - "Jesus Was a Crossmaker" [...]

Keelhaul's Triumphant Return to Obscurity (Yes, that's the new album title) begins in earnest this Friday night, with the Cleveland heavies unleashing their first full length in six years at the Grog Shop. And lest you think they're kidding about the album title, the album's twelve cuts reinforce the band's contention -- Instrumental tracks lacking the drama and grace to fit in with the instru-metal crowd, tempos too swift to be doom, riffs too modern for the '70s revivalists, not nearly weedy enough for stoner and sludge types -- its complex and heavy riffage is [...]

[MP3] Daniel Rossen - "Waterfall" [MP3] Frida Hyvönen - "Jesus Was a Crossmaker" Judee Sil l released two acclaimed albums on Dave Geffens' Asylum Records in the mid-to-late '70s -- one self title, the other titled, Heart Food . Her music has since been heralded and cherished by modern musicans who found it fitting to come together to record a tribute record, Crayon Angel: A Tribute to the Music of Judee Sill dropping [...]

Crayon Angel: A Tribute To The Music of Judee Sill features Beth Orton, Ron Sexsmith, Final Fantasy, Marisa Nadler, Frida Hyvönen, and Daniel Rossen of Grizzly Bear among others covering the songs of folk singer-songwriter Judee Sill . The album will be released on September 22nd. With the exceptions of Ron Sexsmith's performance of the album's title track and The Bye Bye Blackbirds' take on "There's A Rugged Road" (my personal favorite of Sill's songs - Shawn Colvin 's version is also great), [...]

With weather reports predicting high temperatures of up to 95 degrees, day two of Lollapalooza wasn't exactly going to be a walk in the park, either. Well, in some respects it was, but you get the idea. By high noon, mile-long lines had already gathered at every beverage stand, and hundreds of bikini-clad girls flashed around their fresh and fashionable sunburns. Neither shade nor sunscreen made a difference - even the Ice Cream Man couldn't save the day! Instead, while the heat continued to join the thousands of Lollagoers, a mighty wind picked up the slack, cooling things down and [...]

![<span style="color: #384E60; background-color:#84CCF2">Colossal</span> <span style="color: #384E60; background-color:#84CCF2">Yes</span>: The Fraudulent Singer [Track Review]](http://cache.elbo.ws/posts/1882345_lg.jpg)
"The Fraudulent Singer" opens the recent Colossal Yes LP Charlemagne's Big Thaw and it begin with a monumental scream. Folk-y piano enters and a pop-filled fuzzy guitar, all fronted by folk-pop vocals. The song is ripe with hooks: be them the catchy piano tinkering, the wild guitar riffs, or the old-time country-ish vocals. The vocalist is known - you'd know Utrillo Kushner as the drummer for Comets On Fire - but here he sets aside the sticks for the keys and a microphone. The vocals hint of southern rock [...]

Yes, bitches, this Friday is no mercy day. Not really sure why, but Yarrrgh and so on. Actually this Friday might finally mark my DJ debut. I have to confess that a considerable part of me wants to suggest just taking my iPod and sticking the fucking thing on random, but any committed Music Nazi is always going to be happy to force other people to listen to their choice of tunes, the only real question I have is what the fuck everyone else gets out of it. So if you want to come along and point and laugh whilst [...]
