Vertical Horizon spent the last ten years getting a first-class education in the vagaries of the music business. After releasing three DIY albums, they were snapped up by RCA for their multi-platinum breakthrough, Everything You Want , whose title track became a #1 hit. Label difficulties resulted in delays and a lack of support for their 2003 follow-up, Go , but Vertical Horizon has finally re-emerged, unveiling their first album in six years, Burning the Days . Having reached high enough on the music-biz ladder to touch the sun and get their fingers burned, they're back [...]

Filed under: Concerts and Tours , News , New Music Beloved indie rockers Rogue Wave are back in action. The Oakland band has finalized 'Permalight', which was recorded this year in Oxford, Miss. with veteran producer Dennis Herring (Modest Mouse, Cracker, Elvis Costello). In support of the new disc, which drops on March 2, 2010, the band has booked an extensive spring tour which gets underway in Boston one day prior to the album's release. As with its predecessor, 2007's 'Asleep at Heaven's Gate,' Rogue Wave's [...]

With the word "collective" bringing images of hippies and the faint scent of patchouli to mind I wouldn't normally jump on a band that defines themselves as such however if you start tossing around names like Glen Phillips and Sean Watkins I start putting aside preconceptions and take notice. Tell me they just released an album and you'll get me excited. Well that's just what's happened. Works Progress Administration has released WPS. I can't figure out how to describe Works Progress Administration so I'll just them do it in their own words: [...]

Because Christmas/Chanukah/Kwanzaa shopping for my mother can never start too early, I headed all the way down to the South Coast Plaza Williams-Sonoma on Thursday to get Chef Thomas Keller to sign a copy of his newest cookbook, Ad Hoc at Home . I'll admit to some butterflies in my stomach anticipating what I would say to the man behind French Laundry and the Beverly Hills Bouchon opening this Wednesday, November 18. After a three hour wait (no joke) I finally got Chef Keller to scribble his name [...]

(Editor's note: today's interview comes to us with permission from Cleveland Bachelor , where the Q&A was originally posted. Yesterday was one of those work days that you dread, meeting after meeting after meeting. From the moment I got to work until nearly 4 PM, I was shuffling from one room to another, trading brain cells for increased self-loathing every additional minute. Mere seconds after finally sitting down in my chair back in my dank big boy office, the alarm on my phone went off. I looked at it, wondering what it was I was reminding myself [...]

Ike Reilly is a mid-western institution. He's flirted with rock radio fame on WXRT in Chicago, he's been critically acclaimed, as well as being bar band friendly and jock approved. His new record is out Nov. 24 and is titled Hard Luck Stories . It features a bunch of special guests including a high school chorus (Glee anyone?!), blues legend Barrel House Chuck and Johnny Hickman and David Lowery of Cracker. The song below features rebel country "star" Shooter Jennings and is a pretty cool duet on love, lust, sex and all things related to terror (kids) and [...]

Frank Yang If I'd managed to get to the El Mocambo on Sunday night in time to catch first act David Schultz & The Skyline , I think I could legitimately lay claim to have seen the longest bill - in character count, at least - of all time. But it didn't happen so I had to settle for just one of the longest in recent memory, thanks to Thao with The Get Down Stay Down and The Portland Cello Project . As the more insightful might have discerned, The Portland [...]

Subeena- Analyse (Download) Bibio's 'Ambivalence Avenue' was beautifully augmented by the dog days of Summer, he's now slipped out a new EP which contains 4 new songs and some album tracks remixed by the likes of Clark, Lone, The [...]

The original Works Progress Administration was part of FDR's 1939 New Deal initiative which put millions of people to work in the darkest part of the Great Depression. This spirit of community and creativity is carried in the philosophy of a band that takes its name. Works Progress Administration is a supergroup of sorts- an "expanding collective" according to the band's website. At its core it is Glen Phillips of Toad the Wet Sprocket and solo, Sean Watkins formerly of the excellent Nickle Creek and Luke Bulla [...]
