Last week, SFCritic made a post concerning the continuing debate between dancehall performer, Buju Banton and the LGTBQ community that is protesting his music. The debate concerns the LGBTQ's proposed boycott of Buju Banton's performances in the US as a result of a statements, and particularly a song Banton made in the past, which has lyrics describing how to kill gay people. After posting this article, SFCritic received a reply from a reader named "Optimistic Spirit." Through a detailed correspondence, SFCritic and Optimistic Spirit, debated the issues concerning the boycott, Buju Banton and the freedom of [...]

- Frequenze Review - "an album that could soundtrack every aspect of your summer. One of the most surprisingly great albums of the year- to-date that doesn't sound like anyone else" I HEAR MUSIC "a cinematic familiarity that makes it seem like a lost Wes Anderson soundtrack. This Canadian made me want to listen, and I want more." [...]

For Terre Thaemlitz, audio is never "innocent." From Thaemlitz's earliest ambient recordings, through a series of incredible electro-acoustic projects for the Mille Plateaux label, to a current triple-life as producer of astringently political "radio shows," deep house auteur as DJ Sprinkles and K-SHE, and writer/polemicist, Thaemlitz's project has always been to unsettle any putative audience's assumptions of what constitutes knowledge and politics. Thaemlitz is also possibly dance music's finest socio-political commentator. Not to mention her continual "queering of the pitch." With DJ Sprinkles's Midtown 120 Blues somehow managing to be one of the best dance music albums of [...]

Sometimes clothes are more than a fashion statement. Sometimes music is more than just what it sounds like. Papa Wemba is that sometimes. I am from New Orleans. I do not speak French., nor Lingala, nor any of the other Congo languages. But I have drummed and danced in Congo Square. So while I do not know, I understand. You feel me? Sometimes our resistance seems like foolishness. Our affirmations seem bizarre. Our humanity seems unnatural. When you are born poor and African (which too often is one and the same), every minute of your life [...]

Turns out it's going to be video week here at the BM . You got the outstanding, outstanding, video for Kae Sun's "Lion on a Leash" yesterday, and so, naturally, you're going to get something completely different today and tomorrow. I've had the chorus for Culture Reject 's "Inside the Cinema" stuck in my head for the better part of the last, say, summer or so. You see, I caught about 5 mins of CR's set back at the Zunior 5th Anniversary Party in June , possibly heard him on a Zunior Podcast, [...]

Anyone who has any love for any tiny fraction of the millions of hours of pop music that has come out since 1970 has to have a tricky relationship with The Beatles . The Clash's staggeringly incorrect prediction that 'phoney Beatlemania has bitten the dust' was an early expression of this; another was the Sex Pistols' sacking of Glen Matlock in February 1977. His offence? He was quite fond of the Fabs. It could not have been that Joe Strummer and Johnny Rotten saw nothing at all in the Beatles. That's really, really hard to do. Almost every violent [...]

I first heard about this session months ago, and kept waiting for Daytrotter to add it to the vault. Days turned into weeks, and I assumed there had been technical difficulties or something. Then again, it's not like the talents of Culture Reject - aka Michael O'Connel l - are in high demand and I'm sure people were banging down the Daytrotter's cyber door for other sessions first. You see, for all you non-Canadian readers, Culture Reject is sort of a cult hero up here. Those who know of his music love [...]

Culture Reject is the solo project of ex-Black Cabbage songwriter/musician Michael O'Connell. I was a big fan of his old band - Black Cabbage were one of the most interesting bands on the club circuit in the 90s. Culture Reject's first release (out now on White Whale Records ) features local indie legend Jim Guthrie and is influenced by Michael's travels to Africa and Cuba, as well as his work with at-risk youth here in Toronto at Sketch . I spoke with Michael about his travels, [...]

Tyler and I talk about my new look, the joys of discovering new music and new genres at shows, and some of the special release events happening this week in the local music world. Calgary, Alberta's the Dudes are set for a new release. The album is called Blood Guts Bruises Cuts and it's bound to rock your socks off. We caught up with Dan Vacon from the band and got some of his recommendations. Check em out! Alright. First you have to pick up Mohawk Lodge's album "Wildfires". It's one part heartbreaking, one part sing along party. It makes me want to get loaded with my friends and say things like, "We did it though, didn't we?" Next, get Culture Reject's self titled [...]

Sadly, I missed out on both the Ohbijou CD Release on Thursday and the Sunparlour Players CD Release on Friday, which was really unfortunate, but a man's gotta eat... but, despite my disappointment at missing both of those shows, the Zunior 5th Anniversary Show/Party/Extravaganza was on at the Tranzac on Saturday night . The show was appealing for a number of reasons, including, but not limited to: it started at a reasonable time (9pm), which meant that I was going to get home at a reasonable time (before the subway stops); the Tranzac [...]
I seem to be locked in a series of conversations where I can't fully express myself. Perhaps, it is our PR-driven culture. Sitting at the bar at Bowery the other night, a girl named Copper (you can't make this up) offered, somewhat seriously, to help recreate a friend's personal brand. She meant well and he, politely, didn't reject this proposal. But it was a revealing moment. We don't have
