David Gray stopped in Seattle for a night I'll never forget. This was one of the last stops in the U.S. for new album tour, Draw The Line so it looks like you'll have to head to Europe to see him now! The opener was Lisa Hannigan , who has worked with many musicians in her career but is perhaps most recognizable from the days she collaborated with Damien Rice. She came out with her debut, Sea Sew , in 2008, and it's fantastic. Her voice is powerful, but her stage [...]

A relatively recent LA transplant, I'm slowly making my way through the multitudes of iconic concert venues that this city has to offer. Last week, I was fortunate enough to catch one of my longtime favorites- David Gray , at LA's famed Orpheum Theater . Stopping to get a bite to eat, we arrived just as opener Lisa Hannigan was finishing her set. A Damien Rice fan since O , I was sad to have missed her cello-infused brand of folk. After taking [...]

Well, I've enjoyed the few weeks of autumn Mother Nature and/or global warming have allowed. After an incredibly long and excruciatingly hot summer, the leaves had barely enough time to change colors before falling to the ground in heaps. Now it's time for sweaters and brisk winter winds, and there's nothing like growing a beard to keep your face warm. If facial hair isn't your thing or you're a female, settling for summery Australian folk music by Lady of the Sunshine will act as a fine follicle substitute. It seems like every [...]

Drew Holcomb and the Neighbors are playing a show up in NYC next week ( Monday Nov 9th) to be exact. Drew and his wife Ellie create wonderfully crafted songs. It is basically what I think Pete Yorn was wishing that Scarlett Johansson would've done with him but alas they are not all a love connection. That being said I know that Drew always puts on a good show so I encourage all my NYC readers to go out and support live music! Tell them I sent you and you will probably be recieved with open arms. [...]
Here we are, bestowed with another "Best of.." list. This time Paste takes on the duty of compiling the "50 Best Albums of the Decade (2000-2009)". If you head over to their site , you can sample each of the albums listed. I always enjoy reading these lists even though I often disagree with them. You'd think by now I should know what I'm getting myself into when I read a "Best of.." list on an indie music site. But hey, kudos to them. I couldn't even compile a list of [...]

Yesterday, Paste released its list of the 50 Best Albums Of The 2000s, and the list was topped by none other than Sufjan Stevens' Illinoise , which honestly seems like it was released way longer ago, so established has he become in the indie-rock firmament. Wilco's Yankee Hotel Foxtrot , the Arcade Fire's Funeral , Radiohead's Kid A , and Bright Eyes' I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning rounded out the top five. Full rundown after the jump, but first, a few reactions. THE GOOD: Hey, [...]
HANK ALTOGETHER: So this whole decade list thing is getting pretty outrageous. But Paste's list is pretty remarkable if for nothing else than the (deservedly) high ranking of O Brother Where Art Thou? (which might be the last cd your parents bought). But it's Paste's adulation of The Avett Brothers' latest I and Love and You that makes even the most die hard Avett Bros fan (ie me) blush. They rank the album at #9. Sayeth Paste Magazine: For their artistic breakthrough, [...]
Paste's 50 Best Albums of the Decade list, out today, is a mixture of A-list indie rock standards and token hip hop and mainstream picks. These selections are mostly successful releases that cater to a white audience of semi-alternative persuasion. Even if this roster is more a reflection of who's reading than the music itself, though, at least they climbed the mountain -- and hey, the album streams are cool. Here is the list. 50 Björk - Vespertine (Elektra, 2001) 49 [...]
After I peeled off the rainbows and scrubbed the last traces of red lipstick off the morning after Halloween, I set out to find the Borders bookstore in the farthest reaches of Denver suburbia I've yet had the disoriented pleasure of venturing to. Irish songbird Lisa Hannigan was performing a free in-store at one o'clock on Sunday and I was thrilled to get to see her in such an intimate setting. Lisa's voice is absolutely, quietly, and thoroughly devastating . I first heard her, as most of us did, singing the [...]

This month saw the tenth birthday of the Ruby Sessions , the weekly acoustic night held upstairs in Doyles Pub on College Street in Dublin. Given that the sessions have played host to some (if not most) of the major names in Irish music over the years, it was fitting that the guest list for these gigs featured the great and the good - including Damien Rice, David Kitt, Kila, Glen Hansard, Paul Brady, Villagers and many more. Photographer Bob Dixon was on hand throughout to capture the best moments on film. The Ruby Sessions continue every [...]

As you may have noticed, my blogging duties have seriously fallen by the wayside lately. My apologies. I have an overflowing inbox with a ton of new music to share, as soon as I can get beyond Halloween. Lucky me has to dress up in costume for a wedding. Fun stuff, I'm tellin' ya. Bad by U2 from The Unforgettable Fire Paddy's Green Shamrock Shore by Young Dubliners from With All Due Respect - The Irish Sessions [...]
A little over a month ago I was asked to participate in an Albums Of The Decade Blog Tour , where 10 bloggers will choose their favorite albums of the decade. I'm kicking off week number two, but please head on over to our main page to check out the entire schedule. Last Friday featured a list from Clicky Clicky Music and tomorrow's will be provided by Dryve Tyme . So far it seems that everyone has kept it to ten albums, however I feel the need to change things up. [...]
