On Sunday the sun is no longer relentless though the musical quality is. Luckily for any diligent reader of the festival programme, The Whispertown 2000 are nothing like the band to which they are compared (Kimya Dawson and The Moldy Peaches). Instead, the sweet but world-weary country harmonies of singers Morgan and Vanesa ring out over the sun-drenched main stage audience. Not as overly 'quirky' nor saccharine as Dawson's band, their delicate voices and gentle acoustic strums are occasionally punctuated by the heavy bass drone and Lee Hazlewood-style delivery of bassist [...]
Well, it's that time again (a little late, but nevermind), and I'll just be honest here: I didn't get many new albums in August and the ones I got didn't exactly knock my socks off. I'll start with the only 'big' release I've got to talk about, Julian Plenti (otherwise known as Paul Banks) is ... Skyscraper . There are two totally unfair things against this album right from the beginning: 1.) It's always going to be compared to Interpol, though it really shouldn't because, in theory at least, they're two separate things. [...]

We love Dan Sartain 's dirty garage-rock, sounding like his guitar is conducting lightning, but his new single on Jack White's label is nothing like that. The sound of 'Bohemian Grove' (Third Man Records 7") is sassy old r'n'b carried by jazzy piano ripples both delicious and unsettling, as he laments his life: "I'm working just to live/ so the elite can live like primitives". The flipside 'Atheist Funeral' is a dark, bluesy strut as he warns his girl "don't you speak about God at my funeral" - not what you expect from a native of the [...]
A refined and captivating change of pace for Sartain.
As reported , this Tuesday was a busy release day for Jack White and his Third Man Records: the label put out singles by Dan Sartain ("Bohemian Groove") and Transit ("C'mon And Ride") -- both produced by the Third Man main man -- as well as the track that made the three-pack singles release day a press event in the first place, "Fly Farm Blues." It's Jack unaccompanied in fuzzbucket slide-guitar mode on a song we're told was "written on the spot ... at the request of film director Davis Guggenheim while filming the incredible new guitar documentary [...]
I would like to applaud Jack White for his whole Third Man recording studio/record store/venue/label headquarters setup. It is a terrific idea, and it has allowed him to do some pretty great things over there, like signing little-known blues artists, pressing their records, and helping them with publicity/distribution. But am I the only one who finds it a little odd that an artist like White, who generally has pretty cool covers on his records, makes all his artists pose in front of the same blue background ? I am guessing the Third Man building must also house [...]

This time it's not "Get on the floor and shake your body", it's "Get your barbe going and have some beers". When PalmsOut asked me for a special summer mix I instantly thought of the summer mixtapes I did when school holidays were coming up and a trip to greece or spain was planned with some friends. With the PalmsOut mix I wanted to catch the spirit of these old tapes I recorded. Tapes containing music of all genres, cause all of your buddys have a slightly different taste in music. Tapes that give [...]

Ryan(StopMe): In between enjoying all my birthday presents I've found ten more wonderful cuts to entertain you for another seven days: To kick off, here is a far-too-short and appropriately-titled track called 'A Minute' . Alex Gladwell's free to download 'Fantasia' album is one of the weirdest (In a good way) I've heard in a while, so check out it's combination of Hip-Hop, Indie and Jazz. Chain & The Gang's new album is already one of my favourite so far this year. It [...]
