Lissie - Why You Runnin' As introductions to a new artist go, the debut from Lissie Maurus, is a pretty promising one. Blessed with the pipes of her barbershop quartet champion grandfather, and the vagabond spirit of her train jumping great-grandfather, this Rock Island, IL native has unveiled a stellar EP that is sure to turn heads. With an assist from Band Of Horses' Bill Reynolds and Tyler James, she sounds like a more homespun version of Neko Case, while the production invites comparisons to Emmylou Harris' [...]

Ryan at WMSE introduced me to The Woes during our 26th podcast . The band is aptly described as "a stew of Delta blues and early Country, of bluegrass and New Orleans marching band music, dished out by banjo, harmonica, accordion, French Horn and organ." The culmination of all these sounds and influences cultivates into the beautiful new album, Heaven Knows , which has been in heavy rotation since arriving weeks ago. The Woes play The Stonefly in [...]

Filed under: Video , Exclusive With the recent 25th anniversary special edition reissue of 1984's 'The Unforgettable Fire,' U2 are stepping back to remember the making of the album. Bono and company employed producers Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois to help them experiment musically, and while it seemed like an unlikely combination then, their work on 'The Unforgettable Fire' led to a creative breakthrough for the band. It also helped to deliver the lead single [...]

Being a music fan and living in Los Angeles can have its perks. Among them is the fact that we have classic venues, such as TheTroubadour, where last night, multi-instrumentalist and grammy award winning producer, Daniel Lanois , performed to a sold-out crowd. This can also be a downside given that this particular crowd was [...]

Blk Jks Play Spaceland On Thursday Nights like Thursday are just a cruel joke to live music fans. It's another insane week of shows - old legends, new legends, 90's heroes and current Pitchfork darlings. I caught Polvo last Saturday. The problems I had with their set list a few months back at the Echoplex were corrected. Great set. They played everything I wanted to hear. Monday 10/12/09 [Pick of the Night] Light FM [...]

In 1990, U2 went to Germany just before the Berlin Wall came down and reunification occurred to begin recording their next album, the result of which would be my favorite album ever, Achtung Baby . They recorded in Berlin's Hansa Ton Studio where David Bowie worked with Brian Eno to create Low, Heroes, and Lodger . U2 went into the studio with Daniel Lanois and Flood with very little material and just tried to create songs while jamming around some song sketches and parts. Then the tapes got stolen and later bootlegged all around the world, after they [...]
Producer extraordinaire Daniel Lanois delivers his latest, self-released, collection of instrumental songs.

Vacations and other deadlines have conspired to make me late this month, kids - apologies for the delay. In keeping with the theme (and in an effort to finally wrap up our September lists), I'm going to make this quick: my goal was to assemble a list of songs that were just short enough to leave you wanting more, songs that made you skip back & listen to them again right away. Here we go: Ten Minute Turns, "Stars Burn OUT" A perfect combination of dusky [...]
Remember when Buzzgrinder was good? You know, before we jumped the shark? Yeah, we don't either. But we are going to crack open our archives once a week anyway, to see what we were talking about around this date in the middle of the decade, now that it's almost over and all. :: Our boy Matt DeBenedictus gave everyone the lowdown on the "final" Coalesce show . Final show - funny, right? :: Mercury Radio Theater checked in with us while on their Stache Across America [...]

It's been quite some time since the HT Crew got together for an old fashioned cookout, and frankly the ol' grill was getting a bit dusty and feeling neglected. With the summer - and for that matter the decade - rapidly coming to a close we figured we'd round up the gang, throw some large hunks of meat on the fire pit and crack open a few 21st Amendment Brew Free! Or Die IPAs for another rousing edition of At The Barbecue . It's hard [...]
Like a Version is a segment on the Australian radio station Triple J. It was created by Mel Bampton as part of the Mel in the Morning program. Currently the segment pops up whenever artists are available and willing to do it, though mainly on the Breakfast show. It involves Australian, and more recently, international artists playing live, acoustic versions of some of their favourite songs. This segment's popularity has led to, so far, the release of four compilation CDs. Samples of the 4 Vol Set: Vol 1 Damien Rice - "When Doves Cry"* (Prince) [...]

The mother of all comps. From our friends at AltCountryTab.ca . The Zipped download is good for one week only. Enjoy! The photo is from a family vacation near LaFollette, Tennessee. Kona the Chocolate Lab leads the chase, but Mikey the Boston Terrier in his personal flotation device will eventually get the tennis ball. I hope I am reincarnated as a dog and I get to spend my next life chasing tennis balls all day. 1. Ben Lee - Away With The Pixies.mp3 [...]

When it comes to musicians that incorporate jazz techniques and background into their pop songs, (to quote Adrock) " I'm about it bout it ." When I lived in Toronto, one of my favorite hangouts was the Rex on Queen. For some reason I loved hearing the U of T students pass the hat after showing off their modern take on the classics. I know from a purists point of view, 18-22 year-old kids trying to "improve" Hancock, Grant Green or Mingus isn't really a good thing, but the passion the young artists had always meshed well with the Labatt [...]
