It's my first feature for Flagpole ! And it's about a band whose record I really admire. I've written about them before; I did a review of Hospice for Atlanta Music Guide back in August. And tomorrow night, they'll be in Athens to play at the 40 Watt. Can't wait! The Antlers Finding the Hope in Hospice Once in a great while, a true concept album gets made. It doesn't preach or pander; its narrative serves not as a [...]

I spent most of the Antlers' set at Northampton's tiny, almost empty Iron Horse Music Hall wondering why they weren't doing it for me. When I wasn't thinking about this I was considering wearing earplugs to shows and I was thinking about where I was going to catch the bus back to where I live and wondering if it was possible to read four parts of Virgil's Aeneid in twenty-four hours (fortunately, it's possible, but I don't recommend it). This is an issue because when I go to a good show I can think of nothing but lyrical and sound [...]

by Andrew Frisicano "I first saw The Antlers along with a crowd of about 45 people at the Black Cat in Washington DC back in March of 2009. Peter Silberman leads a fiery, potent trio. You can hear that concert and see some videos of the show on our Web site. Last night, at the The Music Hall of Williamsburg, they hit a peak only hinted at back in March. Sometimes it's worth a band's time to work and rework its material instead of going [...]
Beginning three years ago as a singer-songwriting project for PETER SILBERMAN, The Antlers have since expanded into a full three-piece, including powerhouse drummer Michael Lerner and the layer-lathering, multi-instrumentalist, Darby Cicci. Appropriately enough, "Hospice?s ten distinct chapters resonate on debilitating sonic and lyrical levels, from the hypnotic harp and tension-ratcheting build

Frank Yang When I reviewed Wilco's latest Wilco (The Album) back in July , I alluded to the absurdly tight musical chemistry of current lineup and how that effortlessness could actually be perceived as a detriment to the band. The same can be said of the band in performance - yes, they are arguably one of the best live acts on the road today, but with that praise comes certain problems. Like say you've seen said band, oh, a dozen times or more in the past decade [...]

The Los Angeles Times considers Kurt Vonnegut's literary legacy with the recent paperback releases of Slaughterhouse-Five , Mother Night , Galapagos , and other Vonnegut works. Vonnegut not only resides in the pantheon -- he's helped create a whole other one. He was a much more literary writer than many care to give him credit for, and sadder too. He came from a family of suicides and himself danced around the idea of self-slaughter. In his work we [...]

[ Darby behind the keys and effect at Maxwell's ] Several months ago I was speaking to all of The Antlers before a gig at Mercury Lounge, and the subject of their many recent interviews came up. I joked that Peter Silberman was taking all the attention of the interviews, and that the other members should get a chance. The natural inclination of any interviewer seeking to learn and report about The Antlers would be focus on the lead guitar/singer/writer of the band, but the two other members are equally compelling figures in their [...]
The Antlers debut full length, Hospice, came out of 2 years of meticulous home recordings. Originally concieved as a solo project by front man Peter Silberman, the record establishes a balanced blend of ambient moods and fuzzy swells. The sound ultimately required a band to achieve, adding drummer Michael Lerner and multi-instrumentalist Darby Cicci to [...]

Don't believe the hype. But in this case, do. The Antlers came through Toronto last night for the second time in less than two months. When they came back in July, opening for Frightened Rabbit, puzzled concert-goers had their index fingers shoved up their ears (me and my bleeding eardrums were intrigued). When they came back to the Horseshoe last night, this time as the headliner, it was clear they had established a legitimately strong fan base already. Throughout Holly Miranda's set I heard multiple people buzzing about the Hospice release. They weren't buzzing about how fuckable the [...]

Frank Yang Everything I have to say about The Antlers' record Hospice has already been said , so I'll focus squarely on their live performance which I was able to witness yesterday evening despite opting to see Joe Pernice at the Dakota rather than their show at the Horseshoe, thanks to their booking an in-store at Criminal Records before either got underway. While they could easily have gotten away with doing something simple, short and stripped-down, the fairly packed store was instead treated [...]

Most Likely To: make Limoncello out of life's lemons. It's not too surprising that critics quickly embraced the latest release by The Antlers. While still inaccessible enough to appeal to Pitchfork, the Brooklyn trio is also mentally taxing enough for NPR's All Songs Considered . The Venn diagram bubbles labeled "hipster" and "grown-up" have not overlapped so perfectly since Arcade Fire released Funeral almost five years ago. By the time this review reaches the Donnybrook Eliterati, most readers will probably have heard of the band, and surely a few [...]
We will definitely be getting to Monolith Festival early on Saturday to catch The Antlers, one of the bands we have on our must-see list . Their album Hospice is hauntingly beautiful and sure to finish atop many blogger's and other site's best-of-lists (including ours). It garnered an 8.5 review from Pitchfork and NPR placed it at the top of their best-of-list so far. A little background on the band: Peter Silberman, vocalist/guitarist (and many more instruments) of The Antlers originally [...]

Filed under: Concerts and Tours , News Things were going extremely well for the Antlers at their record release show at New York City's Mercury Lounge. Halfway through the set, fellow Brooklyn-based singer-songwriter Sharon Van Etten joined the trio onstage, delivering the lilting vocal harmonies of 'Thirteen.' Then the band abruptly stopped. "I f---ed up this amazing moment," frontman Peter Silberman said apologetically before starting the song again. When they played it a second time, the Antlers nailed it. The collective quickly recovered from the hiccup [...]

In a sonic landscape spilling over with overblown speakers and ADD electronics , subtlety can be an artist's greatest strength. Bon Iver 's For Emma, Forever Ago was one of the most remarkable releases of 2008, armed only with stark acoustics and a gentle falsetto. With summer coming to an end, The Antlers have released this year's subtle masterpiece. However, Bon Iver comparisons begin and end with the band's sparse musicianship, ethereal vocals, and songs of loss. Titled Hospice , the album uses a first-person narrative [...]

Walking towards Horseshoe Tavern in the late afternoon with headphones clad and high spirit, I was leaping at the premise of hearing Peter Silberman's distort vocals lull me into trance and shouting back the lyrics to 'Head Rolls Off' by Frightened Rabbit. Meandering past the dimly lit bar and a few security officers, I found a snug position next to the stage between a set of speakers. The following three hours consisted of worn vocal cords, stolen set lists, and intermittent declarations of undying love to the various performers and audience members alike. Glowing underneath crimson stage lights, [...]

Meeting and recording Peter Silberman and his band, The Antlers , was an inevitable occurence happily triggered by the unexpected lineup of events involving a friend named Little Bear, California wildfires and a sweet little label called Frenchkiss Records who grabbed up this absolutely brilliant musical sculptor - an artist oozing with his own raw emotion in epic song-stories while deftly plying the emotional pallette of his listeners. Foregoing an unneccesary and wending tale, I will tell you the circumstances couldn't have been more perfect or more delightful. [...]
