[Ben Harper turns 40 today. He'll be one of the folks doing the big "Hullabaloo" fundraiser for the Silverlake Conservatory of Music at Union Station on Halloween night, by the way ...] Should be a nice night to bring a sweater a settle in for some music under the stars — Regina Spektor , who's been touring behind her acclaimed album "Far," working on music for a Broadway-bound musical "Beauty" and making "The Calculation" on "Saturday Night Live," visits the Greek Theatre. Jupiter One [...]

Before we dive into tunes today, I wanted to pass along two wildly unrelated (and potentially , but hopefully not actually, uninteresting) things that happened today. 1. It was a great mail day, the kind of day that makes up for Columbus Day, when I received no mail. I got two things in the mail that are awesome. First, I won an ebay auction for the above pictured Sebadoh 7 inch single. It's on clear vinyl, which is completely badass, and sounds excellent. The best part? I bought it from Paul Lukas, head honcho at the excellent [...]
It's no surprise the '00s have been a hard decade to pin down musically. With the influx of indie rock coming to the forefront, a multitude of bands from all over the place have broken open the doors and flooded the world with weapons of debut albums. Much like the tips of pyramids, these coveted places are hard to reach by normal standards, let alone musically. However, the tide turns in the greater favor for Brooklyn, New York's very own post-punk, dance rock quartet Blacklist . Arming themselves with ripped pages from the greats of U2, The Cult, and [...]
Has it really been almost a month since I did one of those? My, how time flies! Lets get on it! And best yet, this is number TEN! Hype Device TEN! American History X? Nah, Hype Device X. In honor of HD:X, here are TEN songs that deserve some blogger love, some buzz spice, and and whole lotta hype! Ten awesome new artists and mp3s after the jump! [mp3] Ha [...]

I wanna rock. I wanna rip. I wanna rock AND rip (and it wouldn't hurt to roll, either). But how? With a KILLER-DILLER TRIFECTA OF SEVEN-INCH RECORDS FOR THE FIRST EDITION OF PINCHING YOUR 7-INCH , with offerings from Univox, Dinowalrus and Hindutronic , of course! I'm ecstatic. Is there a better format for a band to get its ideas across without overstaying its welcome? I'd wager 60 percent of the full-length LPs in this world could easily be pared down [...]

With four albums spanning almost a decade, Parisian group Phoenix is finally moving from the periphery to center stage. Their latest, Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix, is a tremendous record. It sees the band diverging into more cohesive pop territory (that began with 2006's It's Never Been Like That ). Gone are the soul and garage inklings that defined their early works, instead being replaced with infectious singles. Wolfgang is already a contender for best album of the year, and with a sold-out show, fans took notice. [...]
Imagine an alternative or indie supergroup that does not take itself too seriously. Cryptacize are a West coast band fronted by ex-members of Deerhoof and Kill Rock Stars solo artist Nedelle Torrisi. So far so good, but what makes them stand out is their ability to fool around with different styles - often within the same song – without sounding all over the place. Cryptacize bash out Sixties pop, electronic sounds, shoegazer indie rock, a hint of ska and a dash of new wave that owes a nod to Gang Of Four or the Au Pairs. [...]

C olumbus, Ohio's Lo Pan returns with another slab of heady stoner jams that packs in a bit of everything I love about the genre. I've seen these guys live and they blew my head off, but never got a chance to grab their previous record! It was back during a time in my life when too much of the extra funds went to the bar and not directly to the bands. Oh the insanity of youth! So, I really don't have grounds for comparison. If given a future chance I'll certainly be [...]

THIS WEEK'S SHOWS (The Vibekillers) Wednesday, April 22: Saint Solitude , the Cave One-man band from Asheville. Dup Crusson plays guitar and keyboards at the same time and describes himself as Billy Corgan's birthmarks, Morrissey's gladiolas, Neko Case's animal dreams, Ian McCulloch's hair products, the church that R.E.M. used to live and rehearse in, and Richey Manic's razorblade. I think the Ian McCulloch and Morrissey references are the most appropriate. This is the early show. The Cave's late show for tonight features Embarrassing [...]

From what I understand, there aren't many over-the-top parties/events that typically take place at SXSW on the first day (Wednesday). So it was decided that my travel mates and I would forgo that wretched early-morning trek to Baltimore's lovely airport and leave a little later, thus getting us in a little later. Of course the one year this happens is the year that all that changes and there's tons of great things happening on Wednesday during the day ( Jarvis Cocker, I'm looking at you ). This, I think, is a good thing and I'm looking forward to folks utilizing [...]
As in my first Ripple Roadtrip post, this post is a homage to the wonderful, vast assortment of music that finds it's way into postman Sal's mailbag, and therefore onto our Ripple desks each day. And if there's one thing I love about the Ripple, it's that variety. As opposed to some websites who seem to think they're above the musicians, or the many quality sites out there that focus on a particular genre, here at the Ripple we're one big open mind. Rock, pop, punk, prog, proto-metal. It don't matter. Our job is simply to write [...]

Welcome back to Flashion Backwards, a new UI feature that's the spiritual cousin of our recently debuted Flashion Forward. Here, we rifle through our treasure trove of interviews to fish out a vintage gem–the better to explore the strange vortex in which fashion and musicians meet. Onto this week's dash down memory lane… The band is-sonically and stylistically-both the potty-mouthed Canadian spawn of David Bowie circa his Ziggy Stardust years and Elvis Presley (if he'd spent the '70s posted at a grimy mike stand at CBGB, instead of stuffing his head-hole with fried peanut butter and banana sandwiches), [...]

As the names keep piling up for South by Southwest 2009 ( Decemberists at Stubbs ! Grizzy Bear! Devo!!), a more subtle development has caught our attention that - while less impressive than this year's roster of names - will no doubt prove far more useful to those intrepid souls heading down to Austin next month. Similar to the customizable schedule-maker that CMJ unveiled for last year's Music Marathon, mySXSW.com is a new platform unveiled on the SXSW site earlier this week that allows users to manage their own personal itineraries throughout the four-day event. [...]

SXSW has updated their band list yet again... These seem like the fastest updates they've done in a long time, right? Notables include Grizzly Bear, Au Revoir Simone, The Long Winters, The Raveonettes, Nashville Pussy, Langhorne Slim, THE VASELINES , more. It's always a bit overwhelming to digest the list and SXSW doesn't point out the new additions... Keep reading for the full list.
