I'm feeling quaint today. That is, I'm in a bit of an 80's way, which doesn't exactly compute with my standard MO. Maybe it's because anything 80's is now at least 20 years old and that's my watermark for feeling nostalgic. I permed my hair, had two piercings in my left ear and wore short sleeve shirts rolled up to the shoulder, had a haircut like George Michael. I didn't roll cigarettes into my sleeve - it was a little too James Dean for me - and that was not the look I was going for. (See above.) [...]

Like most American kids, I went to camp during the summer. From age 7 to 10 I did all the usual camp things; rode horses, shot arrows, rock climbed and made lumpy ashtrays for the non-smoking parentals in ceramics. Another campfire tradition, in between state-mandated Kum Ba Yas , were ghost stories. Yet another year where our counselor attempted to give us the Gold Arrow camp canard about the B-17 pilot who plunged into the lake, and now whose ghost still haunted the area. By 9 years of age our cabin wasn't buying it, we [...]
New in from What What Records, Ed Orable feat Spoek's Dance No More gets a Monkey Safari remix, but fails to ignite a pretty much repetitive plodding track, not a floor shaker, more of an irritant that just screams for some invention and oomph to it! Check out the mixtape though as it's rather good and makes up for the naff track given to me for review! Ed Orable Feat Spoek - Dance No More - Monkey Safari Remix Mixtape: 1. Lazy Flow - [...]

pic: Leo Shoots You So I just finished a pretty gnarly midterm, and so I thought, "Why not spread this joy by sharing some pretty sweet new songs I've been jamming to on my bike ride to class?" So here they are. Think fast! • Drop The Lime - Devil's Eyes (Diplo's B-Live Remix) • Benny Benassi vs. David Bowie - I Am A DJ (Alex Gopher Remix) sorry for the low quality here (160)...still a great [...]

Everyone's favorite movie about the 80's has to be The Wedding Singer. It is kind of unfair to include this in great 80's soundtracks because it could choose from any and all 80's songs but it is as far as I am concerned a greatest hits collection of awesome 80's hits. The movie was made in 1998 and basically sparked a new love affair with the previous decade. It pretty much was the inspiration for VH1's I love the 80's series and also turned the Wedding Singer into a successful broadway show. Kind of weird how that happened. But the [...]

With the hit of drummer Jon Fishman's hi-hat, David Bowie attempted to give the first set a closing shot in the arm. However, the four members of Phish never really got in sync as the ending of Bowie sounded frantic and disconnected and never reached full throttle to finish the first set. The second set would open up with a few bright spots, namely Runaway Jim and the highlight of the evening - Down With Disease -> Free. Trey would drive the jam out of Disease jumping around the stage as, for the first time in the [...]
The musical year of 2010 could very well be like the year 2012, that is if John Cusack cuts a record with a multi-million dollar budget leaving critical audiences with a collective "Oy" escaping their lips. However, what 2010 lacks in apocalyptic CGI effects it more than makes up for in fantastic music releases. Perhaps an LP not as anticipated as the LCD Soundsystem's and The New Pornographer's of the world, but exciting (to me) nonetheless. London's Flotation Toy Warning released their debut LP Bluffer's Guide To The [...]

Click here to view the embedded video. I personally find it rather frustrating when a band member decides to launch a solo career but simply ends up sounding like the original band he/she was originally a part of. It makes me wonder: what's the point? But of course, that's the fan talking in me and we all know fans have no regard for musicians lives or feelings and only want our music tastes to be satisfied. Nevertheless, I can say I am satisfied with "Give Blood," Kyp Malone (of TV on the Radio)'s [...]

CHARLIE ALEX MARCH TO RELEASE DEBUT LP HOME/HIDDEN ON LO RECORDINGS FIRST SONG " CORTOT NO 6 " AVAILABLE FOR DOWNLOAD UK artist/composer Charlie Alex March is pleased to announce the release of his debut album, Home/Hidden, with Lo Recordings. Home/Hidden, set for release in the US on February 16, is a wonderfully melodic and satisfying affair, gloriously English in a non-sniffy manner, like tea and crumpets or a stroll on an autumn day. Remarkably focused and mature, it's eclectic mixture of real strings, treated piano and all manner of electronic keyboards create a surprisingly [...]

While perusing some of our old From the Closet features I realized that we have never given a shout out to David Bowie , until today! So how does one choose from such a vast discography when dealing with one of the legends of rock? Easy! Easy you say? Yes, easy! Just stick with his best album and the best representation of the glam rock genre: Ziggy Stardust and The Spiders From Mars . I wish I could drop the whole album on our site for those pitiful few who haven't heard it, but that's [...]

Filed under: News Rock 'n' roll and spirited libations have always gone hand in hand. A new enterprise, Wines That Rock , wants to take things to a new level by creating quality wines named after legendary rock albums. Even better, the company -- created by business and fan club managers of bands like the Rolling Stones , David Bowie , Sting and U2 -- will place original album art on the wine labels. The first three products will be [...]

Ziggy Stardust wrote the blueprint for David Bowie's hard-rocking glam, and Aladdin Sane essentially follows the pattern, for both better and worse. A lighter affair than Ziggy Stardust, Aladdin Sane is actually a stranger album than its predecessor, buoyed by bizarre lounge-jazz flourishes from pianist Mick Garson and a handful of winding, vaguely experimental songs. Bowie abandons his futuristic obsessions to concentrate on the detached cool of New York and London hipsters, as on the compressed rockers "Watch That Man," "Cracked Actor," and "The Jean Genie." Bowie follows the hard stuff with the jazzy, dissonant sprawls of "Lady Grinning Soul," [...]

X Factor 3, ultime battute. Esce Paola Canestrelli . Resta [...]

I'm gearing up to see Devo on Friday and have been revisiting the classic era of synth-punk, a genre the band had very much to do with pioneering during their earlier years. The genre combines the intense, guitar-driven fury of punk rock with often sloppy and simplistic synth mashing. Though the instrumentation may be the same, synth-punk has little in common with new wave, the fluffier, more pop-driven counterpart. Synth-punk was often gritty, poorly recorded, nasty, and powerful as sin. With that in mind, let's touch upon a few genre classics, both new and old. [...]

These dope album cover mashups are the brainchild of NYC visual artist, Christian Marclay. Who would have known that Michael Jackson, Jim Morrison, and David Bowie had such nice stems? ( via) Related posts: [...]

"Ogni canzone è ancora così eccitante" Intervista ai Girls Ormai è un anno che seguiamo ogni passo dei Girls , da quando siamo stati travolti da quella gioia pura che è Lust For Life . We're headlong into gift-giving season, so feel free to make your year-end list, as it's no mans land as far as quality releases. That being said, there are a couple albums that provide more than stocking fodder. The Led Zep/Queens of the Stone Age/Foo Fighters supergroup Them Crooked Vultures doesn't disappoint, and Macca's got a live album that aims to please. Elsewhere, it's mostly meh in new releases -- tis the season for reissues. Playlist: New Releases 11.17.09 [...]
