It's necessary to start this review with a disclaimer. I have been in love (no hyperbole) with The Album Leaf since I first heard Jimmy LaValle's project over a decade ago (heh). So, every time a new album comes out, it's difficult for me to think about anything in a subjective light, and contrary to the typical excitement we feel with an upcoming album, I get really anxious; thoughts that I'll be disappointed envelop me, and I want the best for the artists I love. When I first began listening to A Chorus Of Storytellers , I was immediately [...]
Really like what I'm hearing from New York City's Dead Leaf Echo . While you could toss them in the newgaze camp, I would argue that Dead Leaf Echo is only tangentially reminiscent of the scene that celebrates itself (which is what was immediately appealing to me in the first place). The vocals (coming from a gentleman simply known as LG, like my phone) have an odd, clear croon, brought up high in the mix rather than washed out (as is apropos to most shoegaze), bolstered more by moody and light synth flourishes and melted, chorus-heavy guitar rather than pure "wall of sound" [...]

Trying to continue to blog while out here in Seattle enjoying the rain and the sights. This was the very first press release I got in 2010, so I decided that they deserve a post out of sheer work ethic. Dead Leaf Echo is out of my new adopted city, Brooklyn, and they have a new album coming out called Truths this year. They just recently released a 7 inch through Custom Made Music with the song Half Truth on the A side that is a teaser [...]
And so we have reached a new decade, and if the first slate of new releases is any indication, it's going to be a damn good next 10 years. Quarter #1 of the music industry's 2010 includes releases from longtime indie staples and acclaimed newcomers, alt-folk male-female duos and weird ass virtual English projects, bands both finally releasing long overdue followups and much hyped debuts. The forthcoming batch of new music is overwhelming to say the least. Fortunately, as always, we got you covered. Below, you'll find an extensive and up-to-date listing of all this coming quarter's new [...]
We've had quite a year here at There Goes The Fear. We've bought you live reviews from Radio 1's Big Weekend , Lovebox , Keane and La Roux amongst many, many more . We've interviewed Mew , The Boxer Rebellion and Marmaduke Duke along with many other artists you may not have heard of , but should check out. Of course, none of this would have been possible without you: the readers. We hope that we've continued to inform, entertain and keep you up to [...]

The Album Leaf is set to release a new album, A Chorus Of Storytellers , February 2, 2010 on Subpop . Wait, let me repeat that. THE Album Leaf have a new album coming out! *Screams of Joy (J capitalized for effect)* Usually I'd say Jimmy LaValle is so talented and all that jazz, but this time The Album Leaf did something special. For every Album Leaf album (I'll start saying record...), LaValle wanders off into the heart of winter and records the album himself. While the winter part remained the same, this time LaValle was joined by [...]

It seems once again artists have looked past shriveling album sales and pooh poohed format worries while creating a truly outstanding crop of longplayers. Whether exploring the sinews connecting electronic music and jazz, amalgamating traditional African and house sounds, gearing up a set of club bangers or diving into unknown recesses in listeners' heads, the 10 albums LWE's reviewing staff chose represent the best 2009 had to offer. We have only one regret: last year we voted DJ Sprinkles's breathtaking Midtown 120 Blues as 2008's #3 album of the year , which disqualified it from being included [...]

Twas the week before Christmas and all through the house not an industry person was stirring not even a mouse. That sentence pretty much explains the lack of music this week...there's just not alot going around right now...or at least stuff that's worthy of listening to. As promised, I've actually remembered to post Ten Tracks You Need on a FRIDAY. You hear that Santa...on a Friday! Before I check out for the weekend, just a quick heads up to sign up for the competition...two of you lucky bastards will win some pretty nice swag for just [...]

New York trio Dead Leaf Echo have just begun the pre-sale for their upcoming first 73, Half-Truth . The titular A side is available for listening on the band's website, and it's probably worth a listen if you have approximately 4 minutes and 41 seconds available. And no less. Some people organize their schedules really specifically, I guess. I'd recommended the track for fans of delay-happy, shoegazy indie-pop; for comparison's sake, if you squint real hard, you might be able to hear a bit of Blonde Redhead in there. (Last thing! [...]
Although I haven't been posting lately, I have been doing a lot of listening in preparation for end of the year evaluation lists. One of the albums I have slowly become more enamoured with over time is Faunts' Feel.Love.Thinking. Of . Since this Edmonton, Alberta, band formed back in 2000, it's surprising that we haven't heard more of them. Following their 2005 debut full-length High Expectations/Low Results they released a 2006 EP and an EP of remixes last year. Feel.Love.Thinking.Of. is their second full-length. Members [...]
Pearl Harbor (Los Angeles, CA) Well last week just flew by didn't it? December seems to do that.. This week is pocked with holiday celebrations and last shows of the year. An amazing amount of solid local bills this week. If you haven't ventured out to see local music in quite some time might I recommend getting out of your house to check out [...]

Dreamy shoegaze pop never sounded so sexy as it does on Dead Leaf Echo 's "Half-Truth". That consistent machine gun snare and those sleepy seductive vocals mesh almost too perfectly with the atmospheric guitar, which at times even borders an angular Smiths-like jangle. It's as if The Smiths and The Dears formed an unlikely union and the resulting brainchild was Dead Leaf Echo. You can also hear traces of select collaborators like Ulrich Schnass and Depeche Mode. "Half-Truth" is one of those songs that wears its influences on its sleeve, but still contains the ability [...]
