After what was hopefully a temporary lull in quality output with 2007's Silver Mountain, Detroit's favorite Stones-loving, blues-rock fueled band The Deadstring Brothers have returned with a new record entitled Sao Paulo , due February 23th on Bloodshot Records. We here at Stark have a deep love affair with their 2006 effort Starving Winter Report . Yet, for some reason Silver Mountain's heavier musical approach and lead vocals from former back-up singer Masha Marjieh didn't do it for us. From initial listens to Sao Paulo , it [...]

I'm enjoying the self-titled debut of Amber Farris' band, "Somebody's Darling." It's kind of like Lucero or Old '97s fronted by a woman with a powerful set of lungs. Rock and roll/country, straight-ahead four-person rock and roll on Shiner Records / PaloDuro Records. In fact, it's hard to write much about them, because the music is so up front and pure. It makes you want to grab a brew, sit at a bar, and stare at the chicks who will definitely dig the band. That's the best thing about alt-country sung by a [...]

2009 was another great year for live music , slightly edging out last year for me with a grand total of 97 shows, in 26 different venues for 251 sets of music by 215 different bands, with 26 bands logging in 2 or more. Continuing to be one of the best live music venues anywhere, Johnny Brenda's topped the list with 25 visits. The other places where you could have found me hanging out this past year being World Cafe Live (15), The M Room (11), Kung Fu Necktie (7) and The Khyber , The [...]

The problem with a list like this is the "shoulds". You know, the albums you feel like everyone else will pick, so you "should," too? Well, this time I decided not to deal with those. My list is based on the number of times I listened to these albums since they came out, whether I love them so much I already know every word to every song, how much it moved me, etc. This is a personal list. It isn't intended to be complete or controversial. That said, I know I'll get crap for [...]

It's another week of double booking with Japandroids (pictured above) and Elvis Perkins in Dearland both playing this Friday night at The Billiken Club and The Gargoyle respectively. Luckily for me I'm heading out of town this week so I don't have to try to make that decision, but with AA Bondy opening at the Gargoyle I think I would have had to lean that way. Let me [...]

Here we are. Another month, another podcast. Can you believe it's been 6 months? Traffic on these is improving a little and that's raised my spirits about doing them...I know I'm supposed to be all about doing them regardless of the amount of people who listen....and I will be, just as soon as the podcast's monthly traffic gets in the same neighborhood as ninebullets.net's daily traffic. That said, let's talk about this month's podcast. The moment I sat down and started mapping out what songs I wanted to play this month I started getting excited. It quickly became [...]

If you're a fan of The Hideout's annual end-of-summer blowout block party, then the following news might leave you with mixed emotions . This year's block party will be devoted entirely to the 15th Anniversary of Chicago's Bloodshot Records and is titled the Bloodshot Beer-B-Q. The good news is that the event will still take place outside the music club on West Wabansia starting at noon on Sept. 12. The lineup from Jim DeRo's Sun-Times blog is as follows: Alejandro Escovedo, the Waco [...]

Ha Ha Tonka has a band name that sounds like something one would yell when opening miniature metal trucks at your seventh birthday party, but actually the name is borrowed from a state park in the Ozarks. This Missouri foursome has just given me the latest zinger straight to the jugular. Starting with a rueful fingerpicked melody, this immense song crashes cathartically into electric southern swagger akin to musical compatriots Kings of Leon . And the title lyric intrigues me with the jaded competency it boasts; something I've never been too good [...]

Roman Candle were unfortunate victims of V2 Records' untimely floundering several years ago. They retired to their native Tennessee to lick their wounds and reassess the situation. In 2009, they have returned to the forefront with support from AAA radio, Paste Magazine, a tour and a great new record Oh Tall Tree In The Ear . An obscure reference, but they remind us a good deal of the Deadstring Brothers, a fantastic Detroit band with a Rolling Stones fetish and a kick ass live show. Roman Candle don't count on the Stones as much, [...]

Burke Barlow of The Deep Dark Woods Well folks, four sunny days, countless venues, numerous Lone Stars and about 40 some odd bands. Here is my long-winded report. Top 3 Performances 1. Dead Confederate - Home Slice Pizza (Thurs): The Athens crew continue to impress at every turn and this set did nothing to disappoint. Mixing a Sonic Youth cover in with their own material, they played for 70 minutes with two encores. 2. Ha Ha Tonka - Red Eye Fly (Sat): Saying we love these [...]

Thanks to the miracles of technology and ThaBombShelter's own Man In The Field, THE Dave Hanson , brings us the second half of his SXSW Report: Deertick : Big crowd. Soft mellow folky vibe that could use a little deodorant. See again? No. The Rosebuds : Friendly North Carolina three-piece husband-wife band doing jangly, smart songs. See again? Yes. Crowd talked them into "one more," to the ire of: mp3: "I Better Run" The Rosebuds [...]

In just over 36 hours I will be in Austin, Tejas for my first SXSW Music Festival. I may be a bit disoriented from my way early AM flight, blinking the bright Texas sunlight. I'll be planning my musical attack, my strategy for eating BBQ and pacing my drinks. Marathon, not sprint, etc etc. I was up til past 1 last night trying to scrap together some loose semblance of a schedule of bands I would be interested in seeing. Here are five brand new ones that I've not written about before, but that my preliminary scientific midnight [...]
More than 1,800 bands will descend (that's right -- descend, as in hordes, like locusts) on Austin, Texas, March 18-22 for the annual South by Southwest Festival. If you've made plans to go, it's hard not to become overwhelmed at the thought of how to figure out who to see and when. Wait. Let me rephrase that: once the tsunami of media, music and beer that is SXSW completely takes you under, only then can you submit to the task of assembling a reasonable schedule of events for yourself. You have to give in [...]
![Dex Romweber Duo - Ruins of Berlin [Album Review, SXSW 2009]](http://cache.elbo.ws/posts/1587373_lg.jpg)
Dexter Romweber teams up with his sister Sara to deliver his debut release as The Dex Romweber Duo on the Bloodshot label. Dex delivers a blend of surf and rock-a-billy and has a couple of notable guests on the album including Cat Power and Neko Case. "Love Letters" with Cat Power is the highlight of the album. Her smoky vocals agree with Romweber in a way that makes you wish that they did more than just one tune. The Dex Duo also turn it up a notch on a couple of tunes like "Lookout" and "Picture" that amps [...]
